Ok. I think hawker food in Penang very boring and generic. Here's my list of the exceptions:
CHINESE FOOD:
Koay teow soup -
Sg Nibong not very good these days. Std dropped drastically.
Best i had and i will stand by it is Jelutung parallel long road to Jalan Perak. Corner traffic light before Shell. Atap shops. Only at night but need to go early or have to wait damn long. Can cook with Pompret. REALLY REALLY SUPERB!
Hokkien Mee (aka Prawn mee) -
I think the one called Greenhouse on Jalan Burma (?) really good. Famous already. The same recipe in Red Garden as well which is opposite Soho.
Teow Chew Thai Style Mee/Soup/etc -
Ranggoon Rd. which is parallel to Lorong Selamat. Opposite tea house near the end of the road. Lunch. AWESOME STUFF!!
Fire roasted chicken wing/drumstick -
By far 1 of the best you will ever have in M'sia. Gurney drive, shop called Song River. Night time. MY FAVOURITE!
Same place, 10:30pm onwards, the grilled seafood is AWESOME!
Steamboat (the traditional teow chew way) -
Goh Huat Seng. I think kimberly street near Komtar.
Chee Cheong Fun with Har Kou (prawn paste) -
The one in Genting, island glades off greenlane is the BEST! very smooth.
WESTERN FOOD:
Penang is a very poor choice for western food. Even Ipoh trumps it hands down! But the one i recommend are..
Bella Italia - Jalan Burma. Quite authentic. They make their own pasta.
Jones st. coffee shop - std western stuff - off kelawei rd. corner by Shell before 1-Stop. Good price, big portion. Love the oxtail soup there. I think it's better than that corner house turned restaurant near Gurney Plaza.
Northam Beach Cafe - Mexican stall. The chef is really Mexican! His wife (chinese) runs it now. Good stuff.
Too bad there are no good steaks in Penang.
