Well your hardware specs seem good. My advice is only install programs that you need and turn off services that aren't being used and startup items.

frankly, i tried them and don't really believe they offer any benefits as long as you have enough RAM in your system.

usually, when my computer slows down, i just do a fresh install. windows will be noticeably faster.

why not? it couldn't be the ram that cause the slowness... its more like the OS accumulating more garbage in registry and system folders causing slowness..

1st: RAM optimizers do not work.
2nd: RAM optimizers do not work.
3rd: RAM optimizers do not work, unless you're running less than 512mb of memory with frequent hard disk swapping. Even then, they pretty can't do much other than force the memory hogs to page a few more times.

The main cause of computer slowness is usually accumulated utility/driver gunk. What you can do to speed it up:

1. Terminate all unused processes.

Press ctrl-alt-delete and look at the Task Manager. If you don't know whether it's needed, kill it. If your computer crashes, it's needed. tongue.gif Just kidding. Kill the obvious ones, like realplayer and quicktime schedulers. In fact, the only essential processes are
smss.exe
csrss.exe
winlogon.exe
lsass.exe (XP Pro only)
explorer.exe
the various svchost.exe services.

Most other things should be killable without crashing the system. Do some research and find out which are your essential services like antivirus and firewall, then kill everything else. I personally keep antivirus away from my comp, since it's a major resource hog.

2. Disable unnecessary Windows services

Open msconfig and services.msc from the run prompt, and disable whatever entries are not required for your specific system setup. Most people don't need Fast User Switching for example. Google for Black Viper's list of services with explanation on what each service does. Look through msconfig and see what it's launching in the startup section. Chances are a lot of the gunk there slows down your computer. I've seen people with startup areas 2 pages long, and their comps fly after cutting it to 3 or 4 lines. As above, exercise discretion and find out what you require before killing everything else.

These 2 steps are basic; for further tweaking, google for registry hacks in XP to speed up the various system timings, such as start menu delay time (400ms by default). Be careful when you get to this stage, a lot of the tweaks online are useless and may actually degrade performance, such as the memory tweaks. You can also run Disk Cleanup and defragment your hard disk. I use JKDefrag once in a blue moon, the Windows defragmenter does an okay job on its own.

There's more stuff you can do to XP, but these should be the major ones which make the most difference.

RAM Optimizers/Defragmenters

Myth - "Increasing the amount of available RAM using RAM Optimizers/Defragmenters improves performance."

Reality - "RAM Optimizers have no effect, and at worst, they seriously degrade performance. Although gaining more available memory might seem beneficial, it isn't. As RAM Optimizers force the available-memory counter up, they force other processes' data and code out of memory. Say that you're running Word, for example. As the optimizer forces the available-memory counter up, the text of open documents and the program code that was part of Word's working set before the optimization (and was therefore present in physical memory) must be reread from disk as you continue to edit your document. The act of allocating, then freeing a large amount of virtual memory might, as a conceivable side effect, lead to blocks of contiguous available memory. However, because virtual memory masks the layout of physical memory from processes, processes can't directly benefit from having virtual memory backed by contiguous physical memory. As processes execute and undergo working-set trimming and growth, their virtual-memory-to-physical-memory mappings will become fragmented despite the availability of contiguous memory."
- Mark Russinovich, Ph.D. Computer Engineering, Microsoft Technical Fellow

i dont know y u still need the optimizer since u already have 2gb ram. normal usage can HARDLY utilize up to 1.5gb ram sweat.gif
