Interesting article. A good read for info. As for me, old school only lor because cannot afford new ones.
I guess at the end of the day, within your budget, get maximum value via maximising your system capability.
Cheers

QUOTE(toonny @ Jun 17 2009, 09:01 AM) ahahaha~ both of the amps is in antique level..? 0.o My 2sen view on ol'skool amp. If you can get in good working condition at great price, grab it. Most of them are sonically good enough for newbie. The good and not good thing is that since they are mainly 'pure' amp i.e without features such as crossover, bass boost la etc, you need to have the function via HU or external crossover. But similar to 'pure' deck/HU, you get the money spent on quality. The amps never clipped and stay clean through to high volume.juz hope thier performance dont let me down.. sifu zenn, do you audit both amps b4..? or anyone..? like to hear some comments.. Personally i have 4 equipments older than 10 years in my setup. 2 of them are close to 20 yrs old. Most of the others are >7 yrs anyway. My friends with newer equipments also agree that for the money spent, its well worth. Just be careful that bcoz they are old, do not push beyond their limit esp buying SQ ol'skool to be used for SPL. Give them some headroom. All in correct gain setting. |

The ol'skool amps are generally hand crafted and well designed, use quality comp with high tolerence level and indivually soldered. Recently, i just repaired one channel of my 19-year old Soundstream D100ii because one of the caps dried off. Costs only RM50.
Money wise. Eg a/d/s PQ20, which i bought for RM600, was sold for around USD700 when it was launched more way back in 1989. Taking into account inflation etc, that very huge equivalent money now, maybe around USD2,500 or equivalent. That would be equivalent to nowadays class of Sinfoni, Brax, Genesis, Audison etc. The design may be old but as far as i know, there's not much design change for amp over last decades or so except for perhaps class D. I might be biased because i love ol'skool due to its cheaper price but i think money well spent and who know, it has the built quality and repairable, can last long enough to pass over to your kids haha. Want to know much better on the craziness of ol'skool stuff in the US market, go to Diymobileaudio website. I can provide the link later Added on June 18, 2009, 11:07 pm QUOTE(abeye @ Jun 17 2009, 11:29 AM) The ol'skool amps are generally hand crafted and well designed, use quality comp with high tolerence level and indivually soldered. QUOTE(craziechild @ Oct 27 2009, 09:19 PM) old skool amps are always better than new-school in my opinion... because those amps are well built for one purpose, music... Yes, I support craziechild on old school amps. Old school rule....nowadays its more like cost saving... which in turns using lower grade materials... and in the end dun sound as nice as expected... rule is still garbage in garbage out... and many turn to digital because of power efficiency which in turn degrades the analog sound as well... converting from analog to digital amplify then digital to analog before it send the signal to the speaker is like buying a new CD rip them out to MP3 and burn them... cheers... BTW to all ICE friends, i am contemplating of selling 2 of my amps as i have too many and they are considered excess. They are one Poweramper QA200x (6ch) and one PPI 2075AM (2ch). Great for complete active setup and passive too covering tweeter/midbass + sub. Configuration at 4ohm Poweramper QA200x Class A 6x30w or 4x30w+1x120w or 2x30w+2x120w or 3x120w PPI 2075AM 2x75w or 1x300w Looking at RM1500 if buy both for quick sale. Some people are selling >RM2K for the Poweramper 6ch and >RM500 for the PPI individually. Soundwise warm, airy and transparent sound for front and clean dynamic for subs. If interested, call or sms me 012-6547162 |

Hi Jefizz,
If u already set on total budget, the next step is (1) decide on the configuration of your setup as it will determine what item you need and what infrastructure you need. For eg running active will require at least 6-channel for tweets, midbass abd sub so either 1 6-ch amp or 2 amps (2-ch and 4-ch) or 3 amps (all 2-ch). That will entails different wiring confg and installation costs as well. Running passive will require less channels hence probably less amps and definitely less wiring. (2) Once item is decided, to allocate budget by items. That will facilitate your buying process of all the items that you need. No need to think about external processing yet. That can come later if you think you need that. As a start, spend on HU that has some built-in processing options such as EQ and crossover. HU that falls under that category is abundant nowadays |

As a start, run passive with good components.
So, a HU, 4-ch amp to drive a comp set and a sub (bridged). Buy 2nd hand amp (old school also can), buy less than 5-year good comps, buy 3nd hand sub also can. HU if good model max one year or buy new. Spend say RM300-400 for wiring and installation. I am sure RM3K is enough to get a decent system |
