D|O, make sure you are using the Windows 7 RC (build 7100 or later) and not the beta (7000 and prior). The beta is going to start timing out next month. The RC times out on June 1 of next year, but has a rolling restart every 2 hours starting March 1st of 2010. The lag time when opening folders can be fixed pretty easy. Turn off the thumbnails and it will load folders much faster. Also saves a bit of space and RAM if not using thumbnails.
