Hi all,

Just got my iPhone 3G 16Gb, but now realise it is from AT&T. Believe it should be from US version, and need a Flex Sim adapter.

Notice a lot of limitation, no video mode, no Cydia or Installer icon, don't even think the 3G is enabled as there are no other settings.

I am a newbie, hence have some enquiries as below;

1. Notice the software version is 2.0.1. Don't think this is unlocked yet, correct me if I am wrong.
2. If it is not unlocked yet, is there any software to unlock it?
3. Am I able to install the Cydia or Installer to enjoy the free download?

Appreciate for some advise.

1. you can upgrade to 2.1 (as the sim adapter merely "tricks" iphone into believing that it is an AT & T sim card). however i have not used this adapter before and what i have here is only a hearsay.

2. no

3. yes. JB it

Hi Nokia2003,

Thanks for the fast feedback. JB means to unlock the phone right (unofficially)?

Hence I hear many topics that there is no still no solution to JB the iPhone3G (US), is this still true?

If not, how OR which software is best to JB it? After JB, do I still need to use the Adapter?

Many thanks in advance.

My iPhone is currently V 2.0.1 (US). Can this version be jailbreak? Or do I need to upgrade to 2.1 before JB?

you can jailbreak it even you in v. 2.0.1 or 2.1, i strongly advice you upgrade 2.1 then jailbreak it so that you can install 3rd party application.
but to use it you have to buy/use "hardware unlock sim" so that you can use it, but bear in mind that if you use sim unlocker your "phone line will not stable ( sometime will get call failed and etc but not much i guess ).....
just wait patiently because there will be a software unlock but how long we will wait is out of a question because all of use cant answer that question on how software unlock will be release.. hmm.gif
here is example of "sim unlocker" i mention about....  http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...25&hl=turbo+sim

Any instructions OR procedures to upgrade to 2.1 and then JB it? Thanks in advance. Forgive me, I am new to this thing.

Hi de_lasoul,
Can share your experience using your LOCK AT & T iphone3G by using Turbo Sim/hardware SIM.. U faced any problem?

Dear Sugen,

I am using the GeEye or 3Eye SIM adapter type. I would say so far so good, hence even the 3G can be used, etc...

Only flaw is that I have to restart the phone everytime I activated the Aeroplane Function. Also if we do not unlock the SIM card upon rebooting the phone, we will have to off and on the phone again should we decide to activate the SIM card. I think this SIM adapter is quite good and improved compared to many from the past.

Other than the above, so far so good. Hence my next plan maybe to purchase an official unlock version from HK, but it is quite expensive, think approx RM3K after conversion for the 3G 16Gb type.

Just did a reset to clear all contents with my US 3G version. Now it has asked me to re-connect to iTunes to activate the phone. Hence no the iTune does not recognise my SIm (with Gevey adapter) and I am unable to activate the phone.

Anybody can help?

3g owners, when new firmware comes out, u have 2 choices

1. update via itunes which means your modem firmware also gets updated
2. wait for pwnagetool and create a custom firmware so u maintain your old modem firmware.

whats the point of maintaining your old modem firmware ?
the iphone dev team is currently only looking for exploits for the first version of the modem firmware which is 1.45.00
so, if u ter-upgrade like me to 1.48.00, u might have to wait longer than expected to unlock IF there is one because it will be based on the original FW 2.0 modem firmware.

just to clear things up since people keep missing it
btw, restore, everything goes back to factory setting. So, if i were you and JB, always remember to install bosspref and disable apple's app killswitch

Thanks for the info. Hence now that I had reset the phone, it had gone back to factory settings. Is there now anyway to activate the phone? I do have the Turbo sim, but the iTune can;t seem to recognise my SIM (attacehd with the turbosim).

Issue solved after placing an AT & T Sim card to activate the phone. After activation, then only you can use your existing Sim with Adapter.

Anyways, with all the hassle, had bought another set from HK. Immediate use after own SIM installed and activated. ....

No lar... my fren bought the AT & T set from me, he don't mind the Gevey Sim adapter cause it is cheaper... sold at RM2300 only (bought at RM2600 including the adapter).

Then I bought myself the HK unlocked set at RM2900(HKD6200). Works like a charm so far.... No regret spending for the unlocked set.

To add to rjmm2's statement, I do agree. After reading all these threads bout Sim adapters having issues, I must say the Gevey adapter should be the best so far as I too was using it without any issues. Only my hand gatal went to reset the phone, hence needing to use a AT & T sim card to re-activate it (first time only). Thanks to my visiting fren from US, good timing.

Anyway, I am enjoying my iPhone very much now.... great gadget.

Actually, I do agree that it is better to get an official unlock iPhone if possible or budget permits. Less hassle.

All iPhone from US are locked and do not believe AT & T provides unlocking services.
