Strangely enough, im using a 20 dolla headset and 20 dolla soundcard and i can hear directions and up or down. Perhaps you need to ensure you enabled directional audio or EAX.

Also RealTek drivers allow you to test the top bottom sound using its tests. Which can give you a general taste of what top or bottom should sound like.

Since all headsets differ (when it comes to top and bottom), i suggest you look into the RealTek drivers in your computer, usually pre-installed with most computers these days.

Naw, the realtek drivers also control what ever device you put in. Its like the general drivers for sound on Win Xp/Vista.
