i'm not sure which backpack i'm going to buy, but i believe the choice would be abundant there, price would be much cheaper too. i'm thinking maybe a 40L backpack would do the job nicely as i might go hiking during my stay there. you can check this website out: http://www.rei.com/

i'm doing E&E, final year.
*
Oh so you mean you will buy your bagpack there? I thought you are playing to buy from here. Where are you going to buy in there?

I need some info on travelling at San Fran

This is what I got after reading 5 pages.

Fisherman's Wharf
Golden Gate
Alcatraz Prison
Ghirardelli Square
Union Square; Chinatown; Japantown, North Beach (Italian Town)
Filmore Street
Napa and Sonoma Valley (Northern San Fran)
Highway 1 to Monterrey through Pebble Beach (South SF)
Silicon Valley

What's there to do at Fishermen's Wharf? Are there good restaurants over there? Are they cheap?

How bout Fillmore street? What's there to do? It seems it's just about history. Anything nice?

How bout the trip to Pebble beach? How far is it from San Fran's north beach? Is it advisable to stay there?

Hope that there's someone who can help me.
Thanks.

Hi,mind to share ur experience??like how much u earn.....blablabla.....i going for 2011 WAT too.....but i plan to go marriott oceanview resort.....i cant find info for housing there.Any idea??
*
Yellowstone is definitely an awesome place to go if you like nature. It's really somewhere out of this world I have to say.

I was working as a housekeeper and my pay was 7.25 an hour. I worked really hard, trying to reach 48 hours a week (I had to look for extra shift to reach 48) and I managed to recoup my initial cost. I didn't spend much as well, didn't buy iPod/iPhone/shopping. Just plain travel in Chicago and NY.

The hiking in yellowstone was really awesome and every employee was like a family there. It's a nice community and nature together living for 3 months. Friends come and go as well, so you make new friends and you will miss some as well.

If you can afford to go for work and travel, I do encourage you. It's really fun, but make sure the employers are good. Check with speedwing/ootb on how are they, because new employers are coming up and some of them have not had track record before with the agents.

Housing, you can try craiglist. It's a pretty famous place to look for just about anything in the US. Hope it helps.

this is the only thing i get for the housing info for Marriott resort.

"We will provide a housing referral/recommendation list a minimum 30 days prior to arrival. We recommend prearranging
housing. The average cost per person per week will range between $75 and $100.00."
*
Yeah some don't provide housing, they just recommend. Try asking if they will provide a place to stay for the first week, at least will buy you time to get the contract done and move in to the house.

Thx for sharing guys....now i am trying to find the best job.....any1 going for summer 2011??
*
All the best, but do note that there is no best job. Just don't want you to put too much expectations and get disappointed after that, cause the jobs are just so so. It's the experience that counts. smile.gif

oh i see...so is gatlinburg considered a kampung area?
is it worth it to choose this kind of tipping job instead of normal salary job?
cause tipping job's salary is much more lower tho...
*
tishaban is right.

well, kampung or not it also depends on the restaurant. if it's a popular one then yeah you should probably get lots of tips cause there's a lot of ppl. if it's not, then probably not so much of a good idea.

you can try googling more about the restaurant to see reviews and all. smile.gif

Like it or not the American accent does help make you feel more integrated. You also need to be able to understand your customers but realistically you should be able to pick it up very quickly especially if you can already understand what you watch on TV or on Hollywood movies.

I've never worked as a server but I know people who have. It's physically demanding but if your tips are significant then good luck!
*
Yup I do agree with tishaban. Trust me, you will pick it up along the way. Just watch more american shows and series smile.gif

I have friends who are working in Yellowstone as Server and they earn a lot of money. But you have to be consistently energetic cause you need to carry heavy trays and you have to attend to customers well. Remembering orders are also key. As long as you keep this up, I believe your tips will be great as well (depending on their business as well of course).

The whole point of the program is exposure, not purely about money. Think about it this way: how often can you work with a bunch of people from all over the world, being independent, having fun and also travel in the states at your own time/planning, for 5 months?

I've been there done that, and this is the best damn decision I've ever made.
*
Yes truly agree. Until today, I miss yellowstone so so so much. I really wish I can go back there again with a valid visa. hey you know whether is it possible for a non student to go back to states to work? Have been missing it so much.

QUOTE(MrTaxxi @ Jan 26 2011, 11:30 PM)
when should i apply for WAT actually? right after getting a degree or during undergraduate study? i dun understand "be a full-time tertiary student in Singapore, Malaysia or Australia (this applies for local and foreign students) OR a final year, final semester student graduating from a full time course"
*
Hmm, it would be best to apply about 5-6 months before the start of your long term break. during your final year, you have the final opportunity to go for the programme cause you are technically a student. so after your final sem of your final year, then you can go for it.

this applies to people who are non malaysian but studying in malaysia/singapore as well. meaning you dont have to be a malaysian or singaporen to apply.

===========================================================================================================

Anyway, anyone going for Speedwing's WAT interview session in ParkRoyal on feb 19th? I will be there helping out. smile.gif
