The space taken up in the orange bar in my iPhone as shown on iTunes is getting bigger all the time.
I've googled for some answers and they all say it's applications or unrecognised files.
I don't have that many songs and I only have a few videos. Just now I deleted 2 videos to free up 300MB. Then I sync. The orange bar went from 4.01GB to 5GB. rclxub.gif

Anyone knows how to work around this?

The undesirable alternative is to restore the whole phone. But if I really have to restore, could someone tell me how to get back all my settings and apps previously? Is it possible with a simple sync?

This is not my screenshot but it looks like this:

except that the orange bar is 5GB.

That solution you posted is probably for an older firmware. There aren't any folders like that in my phone.

Yes it's jailbroken. I only have about 8 downloaded videos from mxtube. Anyway, I don't have 5GB of unrecognised data (be it .pdf or .doc to put into the iphone. Like I said just now, as I put in new stuff or delete the videos, the orange bar will keep increasing.

Woah, 5GB of Apps. Really scary size.
Mine around 200MB.

Cannot be. I don't install all kinds of apps. The few apps from Cydia are things like Bossprefs, Powertool, something to enable unlimited call logs and a few others.

My computer always has an error 1604 when doing restore so I must look for another computer to do it. Lets say I don't do a restore via iTunes. Can I run quickpwn as a way to restore my phone?

I'm aware that I have to be running FW2.1 first. But I'm curious about this because quickpwn requires the entire FW2.1 file.

Is a well known fact that everytime a JB is required, it wipes out everything.

Proceed to do a manual backup of your sms, notes, video files etc and SSH back those files after JB.

yes, please do that and don't opt for the easy way out of using the backup created by itunes; always create as a new phone.

davidgary73, just to confirm as I've never done these before.
To back up my sms, I just have to backup my sms.db from var/Mobile/Library/SMS ?
I am using bitesms, so it is var/Mobile/Library/biteSMS ?
And to restore is it just simply put those .db files back in the same location?

Secondly, just to be extra sure given my situation, I can just use QuickPwn to JB my phone back to 'factory defaults'? Because I intend to restore but my iTunes keeps giving me error 1604.

Thanks for the help.

Just backup the db files and set it back to the same location. I did this v my 2G iphone and transfer those db files over to my curent 3G iphone. All good.

As for restoring, is recommended that you're on Fw 2.1 which you already know and i'm not sure how safe it is to JB your phone with your curent existing Fw. You can give it a go and see what's the outcome. If not, just ask Hanxz as he is facilitating an iPhone Community Service thread.

I'm on firmware 2.1. Thanks, I'll give it a shot and let you guys know.

Added on October 25, 2008, 1:37 amStrange. QuickPwn can detect my iPhone, close iTunes and I can choose next. But after choosing the firmware 2.1 file, there is a wait icon animating for a short while, then it disappears. The arrow is not enabled to proceed. Reselecting the file does the same thing.

I've followed the instructions here http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/quickpwn...guide-tutorial/

EDIT: I think the problem is my computer; can't use iTunes to restore, can't use QuickPwn to JB. Got to borrow a computer.

Added on October 26, 2008, 11:53 pmI managed to use my brother's computer to restore my iPhone. I tried to QuickPwn without doing a restore from iTunes. Unfortunately that did not make any changes to my iPhone. Must do a full restore from iTunes first, then QuickPwn.
