QUOTE(patryn33 @ Jan 27 2010, 11:05 AM) miyota JS50 itself cost ~US$23. Put it this way, an ETA Valjoux 7750 ebauche cost $200 but the Ball Trainmaster Pulsemeter (non-cosc), which is fitted with a 7750 is going for RM7500. But among us WIS, Ball watches are still comparatively cheap. How do you explain that? good discount as in 50-80% off retail? I am sure its a unique item. +1 on ck77 comment.. most impt u like it! It's not only the watch movement that determines the pricing but other factors like the level of finishing, brand recognition, and marketing. Take Rolex, for instance. We all know Rolex produce their own in-house movements. But did you know that the 3310 hasn't changed at all since the 80s. So, why are we paying inflated prices for essentially a 20 year old movement? Again, it's the brand recognition and marketing. A rolex today isn't much different from a rolex 10 years ago. The only difference now is that they use silicon main springs and kif shock absorbers. Two minor tweaks and they increased their prices by more than double? Where's the logic in that? Would you buy a rolex now after what I have told you? Take it from someone who has been in the watch industry for way too long. |

Actually, I would.
We don't actually need watches. If we really lived by logic, mobile phones tell us the time. If you really need a watch, the G-5600E Tough Solar G-Shock is the best watch IMHO with so many features. A Rolex Sea-Dweller/Submariner and Omega Speedmaster are more like jewellery. Bling-bling!! Also, logic dictates neckties are unnecessary. |

It's not only the watch movement that determines the pricing but other factors like the level of finishing, brand recognition, and marketing. Take Rolex, for instance. Take it from someone who has been in the watch industry for way too long. use a fashion brand such as DKNY, Kenneth Cole, EA, Diesel or a little known fashion brand as such above that use a quartz movement to make the argument statement. yes there are much going in to determine the price of the watch not just the cost of the movement. on top the level of finishing on the movement, on the case etc.. quality of leather, QC (testing/regulating) , marketing, brand recognition really? among those in the industry right? not with lay ppl walking on the streets.. U also forget the operating cost, labor (all the neat bonus the CEO/COO/CFO), R&D cost etc.. having worked in The States for a long time and now locally, U may get a tour of the Rolex facility. interview the Tom and d*** there to comprehend their justification. having working in US for sometime should teach U one impt thing, never just take it from blindly from anyone.. not even your MIT/Harvard Prof. Human for crying out loud.. not God. felt like listening to those grandpa... A bowl of wan tan mee also cost RM5 today as compared to RM3.50 years ago. |

I bought one for my brother. He works in a tough job - oil and gas. The G-Shock may seem a bit youthful but it stands up to a lot of abuse and gives you so many features. Powers off at night and comes on as u pick it up, light is set to auto when you tilt it to look at the time. Has world time - good for travel, stopwatch, alarms, etc. Can't ask for more.
