^ What he said.
It's a very subjective thing. You can't really say which is easier over the other. |

i play them both, i find both have their ups and downs
but in my opinion bass isn't all about technique and flashy stuff(more common to guitarists) but its about the groove |

beginning part, i think bass would be easier. coz its notes n stuff, not like guitar which has chords. but as u get to a higher level, they're pretty much the same. there's not one thats easier than another. cant really compare it that way. |

In a band setting, playing the bass has it's own challenges which are very much different from what a rhythm/lead guitarist would face.

For those of you who think that playing bass is easy, try playing some Dream Theater with it.I hate it when people who don't play bass says playing bass is easy.Slapping and popping sure ain't easy.Just because it usually lacks of the extra 2 treble strings doesn't necessarily means it's easier than guitar.
To the TS,if you love the guitar, play it.If you love bass, play it.It's totally up to you.Don't hesitate to learn a certain instrument you love just because it's hard. There's no such thing as an easy to learn instrument. |

Neither is easier than one another.
Guitars are more on chords, and bass is more one basslines.. and both are equally important. Go try out bebop stuff... ;D |

bass is easy to learn, but very hard to master. if you think it's just about dum dum dum... should go to youtube and watch some victor wooten videos.
fyi, there's 6-string bass too if you think 4 strings are too easy. this is a very apple-orange question indeed ts: learn bass la.. so few bass players around, bands will need you! |

Bass would be hard as they need to lock up with the drum and provide a strong foundation for the band to carry on while Electric Guitar would be hard leading the song and have the loudest sound of all ... One wrong note and people would notice.

i play both...and in a typical band setting, i would say playing the bass is just slightly more difficult than rythm guitar...coz gotta have the right groove etc...
can't compare with the lead guitar, coz he can pretty much do whatever he wants... i feel vox is the most difficult of all... |

Okay...Each and every instrument is hard if you don't practice. Bass have chords too for your information. Just that not that obvious and hardly play ( That's what I think ) . Some songs even required the bassist to play 2 strings at once.

They're both the same.
Although, after playing a guitar, Bass seems alot harder to play imo. the strings seem thicker, the neck is longer, following notes exactly becomes mucch more difficult and your mistakes are clearer, so imo, bass is harder for guitar players. Bassists playing guitar however, will feel uneasy, and will be relying on following the feel of the song and providing the backbone, rather than actually headlining it. just my two cents. coming from a drummer though, so my say isn't definite. |

If you're playing either , Just do your part and don't care about which one is harder . Play the instrument you love and savor the feelings. Even if your band member has played a wrong note, Don't worry about it as long as you did your part and you did your best.

If you just wanna decide on which instrument to focus on...
Try both seriously and figure out which instrument u're most comfortable to express urself in. both are equally hard, bass (double thumbing, slap pop, etc.), electric guitar (sweep picking, string skipping etc.). It's ok to learn both, but focus on one only, definitely. |
