Let the Right One In (Swedish: Låt den rätte komma in) is a 2008 Swedish romantic horror film directed by Tomas Alfredson. The film is based on the novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist and tells the story of a 12-year-old boy's friendship with a vampire girl. The film has won numerous awards including the "Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature" at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival and the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation's 2008 Méliès d'Or (Golden Méliès) for the "Best European Fantastic Feature Film".

Plot

Oskar, a bullied 12-year old, dreams of revenge. He falls in love with Eli, a peculiar girl. She can't stand the sun or food and to come into a room she needs to be invited. Eli gives Oskar the strength to hit back but when he realizes that Eli needs to drink other peoples blood to live he's faced with a choice. How much can love forgive? Let The Right One In is a story both violent and highly romantic, set in the Stockholm suburb of Blackeberg in 1982.

Release

It subsequently played at several other film festivals, including the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on 24 April 2008 where it won the Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature, the Edinburgh Film Festival on 25 Jun 2008 where it won the Rotten Tomatoes Critical Consensus Award, and the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland on 3 July 2008 where it won the Méliès d'Argent (Silver Méliès). It is scheduled for general release on 24 October 2008 in both Sweden and the United States where it received an R rating for "for some bloody violence including disturbing images, brief nudity and language".

Reception

Let the Right One In has received almost universal critical acclaim. As of 21 October 2008, the film has a 100% "fresh" rating at Rotten Tomatoes based on 12 reviews, with an average rating of 7.8 out of 10. Reviewers have commented on the beautiful cinematography and its quiet, restrained approach to the sometimes bloody and violent subject matter. One negative comment was made by Marlow Stern of the Manhattan Movie Magazine who thought that the film's ending was overkill while KJ Doughton of Film Threat thought the visuals in the ending were fresh and inventive and would be talked about for years to come.

Awards

Alfredson won the Göteborg International Film Festival's Nordic Film Prize as director of Let the Right One In on the grounds that he "succeeds to transform a vampire movie to a truly original, touching, amusing and heart-warming story about friendship and marginalisation". In awarding the film the "Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature", the top award at the Tribeca Film Festival, the jury commented that the film was a "mesmerizing exploration of loneliness and alienation through masterful reexamination of the vampire myth". The film also won the Méliès d'Argent (Silver Méliès) at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) and went on to win the Méliès d'Or (Golden Méliès) for the "Best European Fantastic Feature Film", awarded by the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation of which NIFFF is a part. Other awards include the first Rotten Tomatoes Critical Consensus Award at the Edinburgh Film Festival.

- 2008 Méliès d'Or for "Best European Fantastic Feature Film", awarded by the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federatio

- "Best Director" for Tomas Alfredson at the 2008 Fantasia Festival
- "Best Photography" for Hoyte van Hoytema at the 2008 Fantasia Festival

Remake

Even before Let the Right One In was released in US cinemas, Cloverfield director Matt Reeves had signed to write and direct an English language remake for Overture Films and Hammer Films. Hammer Films acquired the remake rights at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival and Overture films plans to release the film in 2009. Alfredson has been reported as saying that he is not happy that the film is being remade, saying that "Remakes should be made of movies that aren’t very good, that gives you the chance to fix whatever has gone wrong" and expressing concern that the end result would be too mainstream

'Let the Right One In' Director Slams Remake

user posted image

It was announced last week that CLOVERFIELD director Matt Reeves would be getting behind the camera for a remake of Let the Right One In for Hammer and Overture Films. Tomas Alfredson, the director of the original film hitting theaters October 24th from Magnet Releasing, talked a bit to MovieZine.se about his thoughts on remaking the film, which don't sound all that optimistic.

MovieZine.se writes in:

"Several weeks before the Swedish premiere of horror flick Let the right one in, plans are being made of a remake helmed by Matt Reeves (“Cloverfield”).

Director Thomas Alfredson doesn’t seem all too happy, when MovieZine.se asks him. Why can’t they just read the subtitles?, he wonders.

- Remakes should be made of movies that aren’t very good, that gives you the chance to fix whatever has gone wrong. I’m very proud of my movie and think it’s great, but the Americans might be of an other opinion. The saddest thing for me would be to see that beautiful story made into something mainstream.

- I don’t like to whine, but of course – if you’d spent years on painting a picture, you’d hate to hear buzz about a copy even before your vernissage!"

What do you guys think? I would argue that most American won't see a foreign film, especially if it's subtitled. [REC] is a fantastic movie, but how many people will see it versus QUARANTINE, which is in English? I'm all for remaking foreign films, especially if you can do it good. And even if it ends up sucking, it doesn't mean the original will be looked at the same way.

Matt Reeves Talks Remaking 'Let the Right One In'

Why remake a perfect movie? That's the question that often floats in one ear and out the other. Here's the answer... if this film is foreign, nobody will show up to see it. [REC] is a perfect example and not a single person I know outside of the horror circle knows that the film was remade at QUARANTINE. So the safe can be said about Let the Right One In, which is critically praised and still could never make the big bucks at the box office. Hence the reason Matt Reeves is directing a remake for Overture Pictures. Inside you can read a bit about his plans for remaking one of this year's best movies.

MTV breaks down their conversation with Matt Reeves:

"Will he change the time period and locale? “I’m keeping it in the early 80s. I love the setting of it being in a snowy locale. I’ve been thinking of Colorado, maybe Littleton.”

On adapting the story for an American audience: “The movie and the book are incredibly Swedish yet there’s something so universal about the tale of this kid and something that in the context of an American story could be completely different while being very consistent with the original story. There’s something about it that can be an American mythic tale.”

On his love for the source material: “It’s a terrific movie and a fantastic book. I think it could be a really touching haunting and terrifying film. I’m really excited about what it could be.”

On his personal connection to the story: “I had such a personal reaction when I saw the movie and when I read the book. I felt like there was an opportunity to do something incredibly personal while still being in a genre arena.”

How he sees the story: “It’s an amazing mixture of a coming of age story and a really scary horror film. It’s touching and scary. It’s an incredibly touching love story and a really scary vampire movie.”

Through the eyes of a child? “I see the film as essentially being the fantasies of this 12 year old who’s having such a hard time. It would never be that overt where you would watch the movie and say that’s a dream but to me that is kind of an organizing principle.”

The film may be his next directing effort: “Overture wants it as soon as possible. They would love me to do it next so that’s what we’re shooting for at the moment.”

Felt the original should be better - the mood sets it right. Not sure for the remake though...

You know, if they are going to make a remake with the exact same scenes, tone and style, why don't they just dub the original into English?

Oh but Chloe Moretz with her kit off? drool.gif

just watched this yesterday but find it so-so only. Maybe it is due to the hype that I have been reading about. Maybe cause I don't really like dramas. It still is a watchable movie, just not as great as the fans described.

It still can be considered good movie with all the lousy horror movies coming out from hollywood recently. Recommended to those who like their horror in drama form instead of action form.

I give it 6/10.

I wonder if we can discuss spoilers here...cause I want to discuss about some of the plots in this movie.
