I have now complete building my new rig for my daily use.
It consist of:
Samsung 2253LW 22" LCD
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core AM2 4800+ 2.5GHz
Asus M2A-VM AMD690G DDR2 800
XFX Geforce 9500 GT 512MB DDR3
2GB kit (2x 1gb) Mushkin DDR2 800Mhz RAM

All left is install a new OS. My choice is Vista Ultimate x64.
But first I need an advise from you Vista gurus.
Should I after that version to make use of mobo's memory slot?

Is there any disadvantage using Vista x64 with above configuration?
Let's say I install it, what should I expect to see? I mean in terms of problem? Or is it the same with typical normal Vista?

A full length advise are welcomed.

Thanks. smile.gif

u have onli 2GB which is 1GB x 2 sticks... i don't see the purpose of using vista64 unless your planning to upgrade your ram to min 4GB in very near future

however be reminded that.. vista64, fresh install oledi takes abt 1.2GB ram while vista32 fresh install takes abt 700MB ram from the systems which i have installed b4

Hhmm.... Vista x64 are best used if you have 4GB RAM at hand as well as DX10 feature. Vista x64 should be better optimized for multicore processors too. With your currect configuration, I recommend you to stick to XP or Vista 32bit.

or you can just tune up your rig to 4GB

btw, from what I've seen, my friends using vista ultimate has a lot more stability compared to me using my vista home premium.. so in case you're aiming for a long term usage thing, go for 4GB

Just bought that RAM and I do planning to upgrade the system to use 6GB - 8GB of ram but maybe not too soon.

Ah..ok.
But what do you mean by DX10 feature?
The system built based on Athlon 64 Dual Core, but I guess it should be on 32bit for better performance?

With my configuration, can I play Assasins Creed? tongue.gif

with 9500GT, you MIGHT be able to play it at medium setting?
but as others have suggested, stick to x32
some softwares are still buggy on x64

Simple answer:

If ur mobo can support >4GB, go with Vista 64;
If ur mobo max only 4GB, then stay @ Vista 32.

Yeah, my mobo can support up to 8GB RAM.
The only set back for now was I only have 2GB RAM for now.

Can I just use Ultimate x86 and later upgrade it to Ultimate x64?

Upgrade cannot.
You need a clean installation of x64. smile.gif

nyunyu,

Is ok 2run Vista x64 @ 2GB RAM 1st, u may upgrade RAM capacity later.

See below article...

There is one problem if you want to 'game' on your machine. You will need a better graphics card...

using 2GB is okay... i am using Vista x64 with 2GB on my laptop...

but it's recommended that u get 4GB as Vista x64 loads both the 32-bits and 64-bits kernel (or sth along that line), thus requires more RAM...

Ah..cannot upgrade ka?
Hmm..I think XFX GF 9500 GT can play the games right?

Thinking since I cannot upgrade from x86 to x64, and I'm planning to upgrade the memory, I am tempted to install the x64 version..

okay, I want to play assasin creed as well on the machine..

If I am not advised to run Vista x64, what do I need to do so that I can run it? Adding more ram?
And the graphic, isn't that 9500 GT supports games like AC?

Added on October 24, 2008, 12:01 amBtw, I use this unit for my current ram.
http://www.mushkin.com/doc/products/memory_detail.asp?id=656

The question is, can I add this one to make my rig to have 6GB ram?
http://www.mushkin.com/doc/products/memory_detail.asp?id=634

And btw, you might want to suggest me which ram should I use..mushkin or other brand?

Bro, do you intend to overclock?? If you don't, just get ordinary RAMs. It's save you some cash and you can go for more RAMs.

Nah, I can't OC. hehe..
I thought the lower the latency of a RAM, the better it is.

Yes, lower latency is better but if you compare lower latency vs more amount of RAM, sure the more amount is better right?

The graphic card affects the gameplay more than the RAM does.If you're planning on gaming with your pc,you'll need a good processor too.

if u haven't buy 9500GT, i suggest that u take HD4670 instead smile.gif if u read the reviews of those cards, u will notice that 9500GT does not have much improvement over its predecessor, around the performance of 8600GT or GTS only, while HD4670 pwn all those cards at around the same price smile.gif

today i tested Stalker: Clear Sky on my HD4670, by default the graphic setting is set to High, but when i set everything to maximum, it is still smooth smile.gif

roughly the same, HD 4670 may be slightly higher...

but HD4670 performs neck to neck with 9600GSO...

Ah..so HD4870 is slightly one step above 9500 GT.
So, I'll try to stick with this card first because I just bought it.
If doesn't satisfied, I might sell or trade with higher end card.

err, not 4870, shud be 4670, 4870 is in gazillion steps above 9500GT (so is the price doh.gif)

http://forums.slizone.com/index.php?showtopic=27477
but some claims HD4670 is twice as fast as 9500GT although i doubt that

Ok, I feel that shouldn't need of creating a new thread.
So, I ask here instead.

My parts has all arrived. Got cpu, processor, ram, harddisk, lcd and vista ultimate x64. tongue.gif

The thing now is whenever I tried to install the OS, I can't!

I set in the BIOS to boot from my DVD-RAM, and it loads.
Then it shows loading vista files or something like that.
Then it keep rebooting and restart all loading files thing again and again.
What I do wrong?

I have 500GB sata and configure the sata controller as IDE.

So, appreciate if someone can advise me how to set up vista on a DIY rig.

Here are the list of my hardwares.
- Asus M2A-VM
- AMD X2 x64 4800+ 2.5Ghz
- Seagate SATA 500GB 7200rpm 32MB.
- LG SATA DVD-RAM/RW
- Samsung 2253LW LCD
- Mushkin 2x1GB 4-4-4-12 RAM
- XFX GF 9500 GT 512MB
- Vista Ultimate OEM

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Note: This is my first time using SATA HDD as my main hardisk.

If you're planning to put more RAM, install vista x64. I see that you're into autocad and photoshop, so I believe in the near future, RAM will be your next upgrade.

I'm using vista x64 now. Stable OS if compare to xp x64. So far all work tip top. Photoshop start faster and smoother. Most software still don't have native x64 but all work fine in x64 environment.

I think I know why. You set your Cd-Rom as primary. Thats why it'll run the Rom 1st instead of the HDD.
What you can do is set back your HDD as primary at the bios. Then, when you at the startup, press F12 which is the boot menu. It's stated at the startup there. Then you can choose to boot which 1 1st.

Hope this help.

Found out that when installing Vista 64, the ram (like mint is 667) type or what you called it must be set manually in bios.
And also set its voltage.

I did that and it works.
Got the advise somewhere on the net.
