My personal experience with rejected perfumes actually happened in this forum itself, Lowyat.net. I was somehow fooled by the super duper cheap price of a 100ml perfume which retails for like 230 bucks outside but was only selling for 130 here. Excuse my bad math but that’s about a 100 bucks difference and like any other human being who looks for opportunities everywhere, I was immediately taken by it although to my dismay. The trader who sold it to me had all the good reviews and everything, enough to make me believe he was a reputable seller just selling bottle with defects and what not with a whopping RM100 deduction. Obviously, with all the proof I had and the amazing discount, I took it up.

But alas, I was taken for a ride.

I received the above mentioned product a few days after making a deposit into the trader’s bank account. Up to that part, he was a fine seller. But when I received the perfume, I realized the bottle had a few scratches here and there and I knew that was to come, so I paid not much notice to it.

This purchase was meant to be a replacement for the similar type of perfume i had. The real shock came when I sprayed it on my hand and it smelt awful. It was so not the original smell (so don’t be surprised if traders of these so called reject perfumes start making you buy a different kind of perfume than you asked for because when you don’t know the smell, you’d probably believe it is real). Even after awhile, the smelt was totally different. At that point in time I sort of started getting a little sceptical.

Then I looked at the bottle under a very bright light and saw things actually floating in the perfume itself! There were microscopic hairs and dust which were visible to the naked eye and it looked disgusting and dirty. Then it all dawned on me, the discoloured perfume (it looked honestly like dirty water), the horrible smell and the things floating in the perfume that I was being taken for a ride. I immediately messaged the trader and explained my dissatisfaction. And I don’t know if I was just being paranoid but my hand where I sprayed the perfume actually started to itch a little after that. Psychological or not I’m unsure.

Initially the trader denied that it was a fake perfume, citing that these rejected perfumes are actually that way and all of that crap. I continued demanding for a refund because obviously I wasn’t going to be spraying a bottle of unknown liquids on myself and get sick or die from it so thank god he actually allowed a refund. I don’t know if other sellers would be that grateful, but perhaps because I mentioned the wrath of God actually coming down on him, somewhat like a curse that he actually agreed to pay me back. But I had to mail it to him first and all of that shit. Oh come on! Would you do that? Nobody would, not after you had been cheated. As they say, once bitten twice shy. So after some arguments and what not, he decided to pay me back half first and the rest is history.

Truth to be told, I had my fears since the day I made the transaction. It actually did come true and I was really disappointed. But I sort of blamed myself as well. What was I thinking, a bottle of perfume retailing for 230 bucks being sold at lower than half the price was just ridiculous. So yes, if you see such ridiculous offers that just seem so unreal and unbelievable, yes its not real and you should not believe it. Plus the fact that these things could even be dangerous to you, you never know. After receiving my money back, I made my way to KLCC and bought the real thing although I had to pay quite a bit more. But at least there was the peace of mind that I had actually purchased a real bottle of perfume that is worth every single cent.

from the link above, you'll see that on that particular site...and also some threads in lowyat, replica or grade AAA perfume are selling for lower than RM30 each. regardless of type, but normally the full sized.

Some unscrupulous sellers sell it as original to unknowing buyers, and get away if no one complains. They then return as "someone else"…and repeat the process. Imagine a bottle of perfume sold at RM150, which is a whopping 400% profit from the cost price! And buyers are thinking that they got a really good ‘deal’. 

Some businesses survive on providing real value and only profiting a mere 10-20%. Some businesses never even get pass near 50% profit margin mark! 

1) Confirm Reputable Source of Supply. Verify the delivery has come from a repuatable seller.

2) Cellophane Wrapping. Check for overall quality - look and feel - thickness and clarity.

3) Cellophane Sealing. Check for signs of excessive glue and especially use of any sticky tape.

4) Outer Box. Check for overall quality of material used - thickness – colour- fold marks and edges.

5) Printing. Check for correct information printed on box. Size, Country of Origin, misspellings, logo, and trademarks. Check the style of printing – embossing if applicable.

6) Batch Number – Check for a number.

7) Inner Box. Check overall quality of material used - colour and size.

8) Bottle Shape. Check overall quality - height – width – basic shape and design.

9) Bottle Glass. Check overall quality – thickness - clarity – moulding marks – air bubbles within the glass.

10) Cap. Check size – colour – shape – moulding marks

11) Sprayer Head. Check overall quality – colour - smoothness and ease of operation.

12) Sprayer Inner Tube. Check quality - thickness, length and colour.

13) Main Bottle Label. Check quality of printing – size - positioning and look for embossing if applicable.

14) Bottom Label. Check quality of printing – size – correct information.

15) Bar Code. Check number, size and scanability

16) Fragrance Colour. Check for murkiness, floaties and consistency of colour.

17) Fragrance Oiliness. Check for excessive oily feel.

18) Fragrance Smell. Check for pungent or unusual fragrance notes.

19) Fragrance Lasting time. Test number of hours. Should last at least 2 to 3 hours+

20) Skin Reactions. Watch for itchiness, blemishes and rashes.


A few more other known methods in Malaysia

1) Perfume with hologram sticker written ‘Original-Best Quality’ is highly doubtful.

2) If Seller could provide some miniature/vial upon request… probably, the his/her supplier is capable of getting near the original supplier. Miniatures may cost as much as big bottles to manufacture…Therefore, it’s not cost effective to get these imitated.

3) Any seller claiming that the perfume is more than 100% original(e.g 300% or 500% original) is clearly exaggerating and should be doubted.
