as usual, disabling unwanted background programs
but vista is resource hogging by nature, get at least 2GB RAM to ensure smooth performance. after a clean installation, my viata takes up 1.1GB during idle |

resource hogging or just better memory management? Because it just uses unused RAM that you are not using anyways, and it does makes for a better and stable OS as you are fully utilising your RAM. Not to mention it will release any RAM you need if it feels you are lacking.

i think depends on how u define "resource hogging"...
true that Vista takes up quite a lot of RAM relatively, but now RAM prices is dirt cheap... doesn't cost a lot to get more RAM... |

Cheap RAM doesn't mean one has to spend money to get them. Even 2GB is not enough if you, as the user, don't know how to disable unnecessary service and let many programs run in the background.
Go to http://www.blackviper.com/ and do some research, disable some service that you will not be using, and also Software Explorer in Windows Defender to stop some programs from running unnecessarily. Open task manager to see what programs are using RAM and if you don't need them, close them. Also turn off Aero theme if you do not need those fancy taskbar and transparency. |

Most people don't understand how vista works. When your pc is idle, it will use the available RAM to do its own things. If your pc needs the RAM, vista will free them and this actually resulting in a more efficient way to manage RAM. You will always see vista is using around 30-40% of your available RAM even if you are not running anything and then you freak out because you think vista is hogging your resources.
Try to run some resource hungry software or game (especially hungry for RAM), then go to windows, and you will see that vista has even disabled the Aero interface to save the RAM for your usage. This is something that the good old XP won't do for you. This post has been edited by randoll: Oct 18 2008, 02:46 PM |

This is true, whenever after I exit from a game, I noticed the RAM usage is just 25% to 30% (out of 2GB). Try to run some resource hungry software or game (especially hungry for RAM), then go to windows, and you will see that vista has even disabled the Aero interface to save the RAM for your usage. This is something that the good old XP won't do for you. Running normal applications such as IM, Firefox, File Explorer, etc, will consume around 40% to 50%. |

From my personal experience, 2gb is okay for Vista, I played GRID, Assassin's Creed and NFS ProStreet in Vista with 2gb and its smooth, only Crysis demanded no less than 3gb rams.

The only thing I disable is the Sidebar.
I find it rather useless, as I seldom actually make use of the desktop, rather facing the web browser mostly and other applications. It can at least decrease some, but not significant RAM usage. |
