I've tried searching the forum but couldn't find any tips onto reducing the chance to get 3Rod... Anyone mind posting some tips they use to reduce the chance of getting 3Rod?

wow dude.. what a question you have here... and to tell you the truth.. the only way to prevent 3rod is not to buy 360 at all.. sweat.gif but seriously.. you'll be missing so much excitement if you do so..

But that only applied if you involved in LIVE.. you can ask anybody around here what 360 without LIVE.. nevertheless it is well known that 360 hardware itself is more game programmer friendly that why everything in 360 is so much better compare to its competitor.. without live 360 is nothing much compare to its competitor.. Soo.. you decide..

conslusion: no LIVE = no LIFE.. laugh.gif thumbup.gif

Err.. I don't LIVE yet I'm very happy with my 360 sweat.gif

Back to pic, I think you can change the red LED to other colour to permanently get rid of RROD

One advise.. Stay away from those USB intercoolers. Got my 1st box RROD'ed beyond any repair because the fans were running all the time.

Did the PSU overheat or something? I do have a USB external fan.... will it give me a higher chance at getting 3rod?

To be honest, it's mostly luck. My first 360 I took every single precaution there is, but still 3RROD within 1 year. My second 360 I don't care, I just stuff it in a corner with no ventilation and don't give a sh*t about cooling, until now still going strong.

no real guarantee when it comes to preventing 3rod.

just make sure there's some room for it to breathe.

I also wired up a couple of computer fans running off my computer's 12 supply, and that pumps in some cold air into the system. maybe that's why my xenon is still going even after a year and a half, touch wood.

Sorry to tumpang thread.... Does the positioning of the xbox affects the 3Rod? As in laying the xbox vertical or horizontal.

To my experience, vertical = cooler, so since RROD is kind of heat-related, i think it does contribute a little. But anyhow, it all comes to luck, your machine can go 90c for 2 years without any problem, but it may also go dead even if running 40c for 2 days...

Just buy and enjoy, claim warranty when RROD... no point worrying this and that and ends up not able to enjoy this beauty.

My Xbox360 still going strong even after 1 1/2 years. I placed it horizontally & play almost everyday. But maybe it's luck though...

It's luck lah. You can try all sorts of mumbo jumbo and best practices, but the truth of the matter is simple:

MS still has some hardware manufacturing issues to fix.

Having said that, just make sure you get WARRANTY for your 360 - it'll go a long way towards easing your heart pain. As some other members have said, it's a risk, but you may find it's worth it.

if 3ROD happened what to do? Send back to S'pore? How long does it take normally and do we need to pay for anything for the warranty claim?

to me, horizontal makes more sense, cos you're not blocking the intake vent at the bottom (right side, if you're facing the box). hot air rises, so when it's vertical, any heat not immediately evacuated by the fans/fan shroud heads up to the hdd area. it will eventually dissipate, but having one of the chips below the other chip may not appear to be the best idea.

also, have seen pics of vertically placed boards with the heatsinks removed, and with the thermal paste having slowly migrated downwards due to gravity.

either way, it's a fundamentally flawed design, so it's really a roll of the dice until MS brings out their more heat efficient designs.

If i m not mistaken MS dont really check if ur xbox is modded, in the end they just restore to the default settings.. i read it from some sg forum, not very sure its true.

Opening the console is not that difficult provided if u got the tools.. cleaning the thermal paste in the other hand is a pain in the ass. It took me 6 hrs to remove the paste from the heatsink.

Hehehe.. an easy way to clean the stuck hard thermal paste.. just use petrol.. wet a cloth with petrol and put a few drop to heatsink and wipe it. u will feel more easier to wipe the hard thermal. and u will get shiny heatsink.. try it...
