if the camera's on tripod or anything that is sturdy, it doesnt matter 4 seconds or 4 hours, it's still going to be sharp.

use your 2 seconds timer. there are jitters right after the mirror snaps back (look at the light trails)

i have no idea what settings you used so we wont be able to advice on what settings to use, because SOMEONE did not include the settings like instructed.
*
You're right, i didn't use timer, i just snap using shutter, i was using tripod though...
anyways here's my exif for this photo

Camera Model: Canon EOS 1KD
Exposure Time: 4 SECOND
Aperture: f/14.1
ISO Equiv.: 400

WAS THAT THE REASON NOT SHARP?
Here's the pic again

i believe ur using those light weight tripods? RM18 ones

Hm... i was using the free tripod that came with the cam, Maybe next time i will try borrow other people's sturdier tripod to testing and use timer or a switch. Thanks for the advice lwliam.

I like this thread constructive criticism and some troubleshooting, instead of some thread where people keep on tembaking people and keep on talking bout buying good lens only, lols.

Here's my take for today, i went to Lambir national park, you guys can google it up. It's near my place, has 8 waterfalls. I took a pic while i was hiking.
Camera: Canon 1000d

This is the run down monitor tower on the way
Focal Length: 25
Iso:800
Exposure:1/1000
F:6.3
Mode:Manual

This is the waterfall i took,i wanted to take a steady stream of water. I know it's overexposed,i set the shutter at slowest(the one beside bulb) but failed so ended up trial and error settle with 1/4, i used the built in flash too, if not it will be more overexposed, and iso already put at 100, and i realise something when i pop up the flash, the shutter seems to be fixed at 1/200, why ah? I'm using Canon btw. How can i correct my shot.

next time, if ur not used to fully manual, in these cases, switch over to aperture mode, and see what is the shutter reading will be... then work on it in manual accordingly... tweak until u like...

better still, use a polarizer...
*
Good idea, i was using manual and cause wanted to get the endless stream and couldn't get the pics i want so i tried shutterl, i will try the aperture mode some other time if got chance, Thanks

QUOTE(nicotine @ Dec 1 2008, 12:16 AM)
would like to comment on the 2nd picture.. it's overexposed, best time to snap waterfall would be around 9-10, u might also try to lower the EV .. eg -1ev.
just 2 cent from a noob=)
*
yup did that was at -2, max dy (9-10) hehe, wont be able to wake up so early, thanks for the tip dude.

o_O From Sarawak too eh.  smile.gif
For your second pic, I greatly doubt that using the flash will do anything to the pic. The surroundings are already very bright and the built-in flash has a maximum range of about only 3m  sad.gif
If I were you, I'd use M mode and fix the shutter speed while playing around with the aperture to get a good exposure.  biggrin.gif
*
I also thought the flash no use, but i just pop it up for trying and my pic was less overexposed, i dunno why so i kept it for all the shots and this shot is the best that i could take of the waterfall. Initially was playing with M and couldn;t get what i want so settled with Shutter mode and let the processor do the handling of the aperture. Thanks for the advice, you from Sarawak too, which part?(PM me). DOnt be sad our cam flash range can bump to 15m, i just checked. It says at 18mm and iso 1600 effective range is 14.9m wows thats far.

hi there civic_noob...juz wanna share wif u about the 1/200 problem u r facing...actually, when u pop up the built in flash, the shutter speed will be automatically set to maximum value of 1/200..if u disable the flash, the max shutter speed will be 1/4000 sec...in addition, to capture the waterfall partical, u shud use 1/4000, without the flash..preferable on sunny day...btw nice shot and nice try....keep on clicking and do read the manuals given with ur camera, it helps a lot... biggrin.gif icon_rolleyes.gif
*
Thanks for the fact dude, i have a question, since it's maximum value is 1/200 can i manually adjust it and how, im reading manual pg58 built in flash, don't seem to find the answer.

Really appreciate you guys constructive comment

Not to be harsh, but all your photos (including the 1st night shot) are over exposed. Your camera has an indicator in the viewfinder (find its location out from your manual) which will blink like no tomorrow when the photo to be taken is over/under expose. It's time to
1. RTFM, and
2. http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials.htm, and 3. Read books on composition and exposure, and
4. Observe how other great waterfalls photos was taken

As for your 2nd photo:
1. Your composition is way out - and pls - don't tilt it. Not every tilt is entitled to be called "creative".
2. It's over exposed. - pls consult others opinion as they have suggested.

Cheers and have fun.  smile.gif

Thanks dude, first pic i overexpose on purpose cause i like the colour,
2nd pic was not composing at all, just wanted to get the endless stream and i sat the cam on a chopped down tree trunk so i didn't tilt it on purpose, thanks for the link. Am reading bout ND filters from the previous comments might get one since it looks really cheap in sg arounf sgd12 only. Thanks padfoot

may i point out that there's not a single point in focus? ur too near for the lens to focus, ur using a 50mm, move back a bit

try not to use the extremes of the aperture range, its softer there
*
Noted, first try will try to improve.
1.Move back a bit
2.DOn;t use the extreme of apertures, ok?

Do you have a pic of any food shot to share? I wanna learn thanks.

Hmm...i will try again trial and error, cause i still noob, cam less than a month, anyways i'll be going to sg tomorrow, will share more 'improved' pics with you guys, hopefully.
I initially lowered to f1.8 because i want the whole background to be as blur as possible 'cept for the food, that's what i read from a few food photography blogs.
Noted higher f value. Thanks again guys. William your cendol looks damn tasty lah...Nyum
