I've read that because of the thinner bodies of the SGs, their sound are more influenced by their pickups rather than their mahogany body. Anyone care to comment on this?

But if threadstarter really wanted a thick sound with an SG, try the SD SH-8 Invader. Down's Pepper Keenan uses one in his ESP, check the below video if you're interested. Damn cool band.
