It's possible to compress all those gigabytes of data to up to 3%, BUT, you're not guaranteed that extracted data will work, if the file has digital signature, it'll corrupted, and in many cases, those files are empty files with lots of spaces. Not to mention that compress/decompress operation could take ages if using old hardwar. In the end, it's just not worth your time and efforts, just use either RAR, 7z or UHA for best compression (no ZIP pls)...

I've done it before with KGB Archiver. I've also managed to extract the archived/compressed file done by KGB. However, this will increase the risk of file failures. It took me 3 days to archive/compress my original Vista Ultimate disc (Non-SP1) on a P4 3.0GHz, 1GB RAM.

QUOTE(FarCry3r @ Oct 15 2008, 08:07 AM) UHA compression is mainly for game files such as DDS or graphic files, as always there's no way to truly compress a multimedia files such as mp3 or ogg or equivalent files... Agreed, no point compressing MP3 because they're, a type of files that've been compressed. |

Game nowday includes high resolutions textures and models and such files won't compress nicely unless you know how to rip yer games. Why don't get a 8gb thumbdrive? It's sufficient for almost newer games... but in the end, it's unethical to copy and share games with others unless you sell it to them (or they have the appropriate licenses)... |

Your compression test is highly inaccure. next time you do it, be sure to use the same test file and dictionary size

Precisely. Besides, most MP3 songs (English) aren't more than 10MB.QUOTE(freddy manson @ Oct 16 2008, 07:58 AM) well, what im trying to compress is snatllation files. for games. since games nowadays are huge in term of their installation files, i wanna transfer it to my friends using smaller media such as thumbdrives and cds (not dvds)... It's illegal to transfer copyrighted games. Like "FarCry3r" said, get a 8GB thumbdrive, it's quite cheap and should fit the latest games. Try KGB Archiver like I recommend.QUOTE(atomica @ Oct 16 2008, 08:24 PM) Seriously, it is possible, I've tried it with KGB Archiver but it took me 3 days to compress 2GB into 2MB on an Intel P4 3.0GHz and 1GB DDR RAM.This post has been edited by TechnoDude94: Oct 16 2008, 08:30 PM |
