ABOUT COLLIES

A collie is a distinctive type of herding dog, ultimately originating in Britain, especially in the upland areas of the north and west. It is a medium-sized, fairly lightly-built dog with a pointed snout, and many types have a distinctive white pattern over the shoulders. Collies are very active and agile, and most types have a very strong herding instinct. The collie type has spread through many parts of the world (especially Australia and North America) and has diversified into many landraces and breeds, sometimes with mixture from other dog types. Some of the collie types have remained as working dogs, used for herding cattle, sheep and other livestock, while others are kept as pets, show dogs or for dog sports, in which they display great agility, stamina and trainability.

Common use of the name "collie" in some areas is limited largely to certain breeds – such as to the Rough Collie in parts of the United States, or to the Border Collie in many rural parts of Great Britain. Many collie types do not actually include "collie" in their name.

pls share all about collies, don't forget about your Collies' photos!

Border is not guard dog, they are very active family dog. They can be a good watchdog.Yes they r the smartest dog in dogworld as a result from a few experiments...

U can try english mastiff, bullmastiff or french mastiff. They are very good guard dog. Or maybe u can consider Great Dane, as they are not guard dog but their appearance will give people a very scary feeling, especially black GD

Hope your BC pup will turn out to have good health + temperament smile.gif My neighbour's 6 yr old male BC has great temperament - calm and good with people/dogs. Doesn't bark much which is very fortunate since collies tend to bark a lot. Very obedient and won't even run out if the gate is open haha. Have to credit his owners for raising him well, even if he had a good temperament to start out with if the owners didn't take time to train him he'd prolly be naughty too. Not as energetic as I would expect a herding dog to be but that might be due to his hip problem. The owners told me he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at age 2, they later found out he was the product of inbreeding and the breeder didn't check for genetic faults =o= Hopefully you did your research and your pup is from parents with solid health records smile.gif

Yes, she's certified. I got her from a breeder but she was the last batch. He's now retired. You could opt for importing one in. smile.gif

Famous means you follow the trend of what other people like? I don't think it should be that way.

Hard to get full length shots of him because he loves human attention so much he'll start drifting towards the camera the moment he sees me tongue.gif He has like, zero herding instinct lol, prolly one of the most inactive and docile collies you will ever find hahaha.

That's actually a good thing, she prolly finished teething and doesn't feel such a strong need to chew anymore. I'm asking Toki where she get her rough collie as I've been trying to find good breeder of this breed.
and I'm not saying that ppl buy sheltie because the breed is more famous than rough collie as I've seen some sheltie's owner and hardly seen any rough collie owner. Or if you're talking bout me, I'm actually intend to find nice rough collie with cert as I need the cert to import them back to my hometown if I need to go back for good. So, I've prefer puppy with cert thou their price is higher and I might need to cert in the future smile.gif

Would you believe I use a humble point and shoot (Canon Ixus 900TI)? I post-process my photos in Photoshop if any enhancements are needed smile.gif Hoping to get a Lumix LX3 eventually as it's the one of the few high end compact cameras capable of producing images approaching DSLR-quality (can't beat a DSLR cam but I don't fancy carrying a bulky and heavy camera around tongue.gif).

The sheltie lives with my bf, at my home I have 4 dogs. The 2 boys are my own - 4-5 yr old rescued mutt that's probably some sort of hound mix and a 9 month old labrador. The 2 girls are foster cases - 8 month old beagle I rescued from a bad breeder and an old spitz (looks like a purebred American Eskimo) that was found wandering in Subang that was handed over to Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better. Never a dull moment in my house ^^

Oh... Erm... I thought Sheltand Sheepdogs are a breed on their own? Not anykind of Collie. Sorry correct me if I'm wrong.

Ozzy's a gorgeous tri-coloured sheltie btw smile.gif
*
Thanks, Ozzy does look rather decent for an 8 year-old smile.gif Collies are like a group of dogs, if that makes any sense? Just like how beagles are classified under the hound group and pomeranians are considered a type of spitz. You can read about the breeds classed under the collie group here, there are so many I can't remember lol.

I was considering the Canon G10 (was between that and the LX3) but prefer the LX3 cos it's more compact (teruk or not haha, choose based on size). Do you post-process pics from your DSLR or do the pics come out that good looking originally? I really like the depth of colour in particular in your pics smile.gif

And thanks, I get a lot of joy from the dogs so caring for them is worth it smile.gif

Yeah, Rough Collies are under herding/pastoral group and so are Shelties. smile.gif So.... Anyway... Back to Collies!

So, I've prefer puppy with cert thou their price is higher and I might need to cert in the future smile.gif

btw, Toki, how old is ur collie?
*
She's now almost 1 and a half years old. smile.gif Where is your hometown if I may ask? I'll help you keep an eye out if there are any good puppies around. I have been searching for another Rough Collie but to no avail. Those that I have found don't come with MKA cert.

I'm from Indonesia smile.gif
thou I plan to stay and work here after I grad, I still prefer to find a pup with cert as it'll be easier for me to bring them back with me if I need to to back my hometown for good. I've actually found rough collie for sale but not sure if the puppies got any cert plus I'm not sure if the person is a breeder or not so I just look around tongue.gif I guess I really need to save more money before I really hunt the pup cuz the price sure will hijack my purse lol

Ah I see! smile.gif Are there Rough Collies in Indonesia?
Yes, I too prefer to get certified dogs. I also check on the background of the breeders, sire & dam before committing.
Haha the price isn't cheap... But it's sure worth it when you find a good pup.

agreed, in M'sia alot of breeder sell them for the sake of money, even with mka cert they neglect taking care of the pups.

That is only true if you go alone with your furkid smile.gif But if you can get enough people to book the whole resort, Ruby would be more than happy to accommodate everyone...the last two times I went to Ruby's with my friends and their furkids, we gathered enough people to book the whole resort smile.gif And since the resort is smaller compared to other big hotels, it's not hard to find enough people wink.gif

Be careful smile.gif I never take any pups under my care out for walks unless they've had the full set of vaccines. Their immune system can still fail to respond to the vaccine after the first or second vacc and become infected by parvo/distemper etc. My retriever pup was mostly indoors up till the age of 5 months for this reason.

Even if you take your pup to places where there aren't dogs in sight there's no guarantee stray dogs don't pass by and shed viruses along the way. My neighbour's pup that already had one vacc just got hospitalised for parvo and the poor boy has never even set foot out of his home - my neighbour and I are speculating whether stray animals or neighbours' cats carried the virus into the compound (birds, cats etc. stepping/sniffing around parvo-infected dog poo and spreading it wherever they go).

Yup... My exact concern. I don't let my new pups mix with my elder dogs too coz they go out and might carry back viruses with them. Call me paranoid, but better be safe than sorry. tongue.gif

How many vaccines has she had so far?

Green apple is great, I feed whole apples (with the core removed so there's no risk of seeds poisoning my dog) to my lab as a healthy treat. Very fun to see him bat the apple around and devour it biggrin.gif Fruits that are toxic to dogs you should avoid: raisins, grapes, avocado (some dogs are OK with avocado but better to be safe than sorry). Remove seeds from fruits as some contain cyanide which can poison your dog. To get the most nutritional benefits out of fruits (dogs don't digest whole fruit very well) blend them or cook them. But if you just want to give them as healthy treats no need to be so thorough, especially if your dog already has a good main diet smile.gif

Added on May 7, 2010, 10:34 pmrecently my Bingo is 2 months full, but tried to train her like shake hand & sit, it looks like bingo is very hard to train, probably many reasons, maybe she still too young to be trained?she doesn't get attracted by aroma food/treat. but all in her mind is..Play play play!any advise?

I mentioned somewhere before that Collies can't take Heartguard. The alternative would be Interceptor. Which I personally feel is better than Heartguard.

I don't think 2 months is too young. Maybe you're taking the wrong approach? When I first got my Rough Collie, she was 8 weeks old and she learnt how to sit and stay in 3 hours. Instead of tempting her with treats, try toys instead since you mentioned that she likes to play.

Edit : The ingredient in Heartguard that Collies are allergic to is called IVERMECTIN.

done it, not working, called up my breeder which he have alot of experience of BC, he told me BC pup, will at least 5-6months then only understand our language, because on her age now it's a norm she never focus on a thing. but it's no harm to give her a try till then..sigh.

BC is not hard to raise as long as u have heart for it & BC'll require alot companionship,if left alone they'll be looking for trouble
(example: dig mud, bite flowers, play with pail of water & etc), but then even choosing any other breed of dog also.I'll always advise to alot of ppl is to think twice before adopt.

Good day!

My dad found him by the road when he was a puppy then we all decided to keep him. His name is Othello. Until now we are unsure of what breed he is.
Some says he looks like border collie or breed mixture of collie. Here are some pictures of him... Please help me to identify him.
Thank you! Oh he is a really smart dog.

collies are one of smartest breed of dogs.

and I notice othello have 2 colours in his face. chances are the eyes also have bi-colours. just like Cohen above. grey and brown.

but yea think might have a mix of breed bcos i dont see a full coat of furs under the neck or shoulders. normally collies have a full coat

Hello guys!

I'm currently looking for a male Border Collie puppy to add to my family after my former dog has passed. I do want to view the parents of the puppy, as well as have queries on the health and status of the parents before I agree to take in the puppy as I intend to bring the dog for agility competition, Search and Rescue training, as well as be part of my programme as a Certified Pet Nutritionist.

Preferably from breeders, but I am open to otherwise if the above can be provided and whoever it is in charge of the pup is happy to entertain my queries on the health status of the pup. Would be great if you could contact/PM me! Thank you!
