According to this blog entry, if I'm reading it right, EVA01 was NOT pierced by "The Spear of Longinus", but instead "The Spear of Cassius".

Now, the Roman Centurion who supposedly used the mythical "Longinus spear" from real life stories, was named Gaius Cassius Longinus, so it is still related to the same spear. How different the spear is, or if it's not just the same spear renamed, is still unknown.

However, this could also mean that the OTHER spear, currently in the basement of NERV, could really be the Lance of Longinus.

Maybe I'm slowpoking hard here, but it is the first I've heard of "The Spear of Cassius".

The Japanese network NTV will air the first six minutes and 38 seconds of the Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (Evangelion Shin Gekijō-ban Q Quickening) film on November 16 — one day before the film opens in Japanese theaters. The preview will run after the airing of the second new Evangelion film, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance, in NTV's traditional 9:00 p.m. "Friday Road Show!" timeslot for movies and specials.

Officially, Gainax has yet to take any sort of legal or official action regarding the outfit, stating that they were shocked that it even existed in such a manner, but the fact that the studio confirmed during the J-Cast interview that they were not contacted at any point by Victoria's Secret or their corporate parent in Limited Brands regarding the costume design does not bode well, as the costume itself is more than a simple tribute to Rei's plugsuit to the trained eye.

Basically, Anno was making a hugely sarcastic commentary to people that didn’t actually pick up on sarcasm very well, and as we all know—it backfired big time. It became a moebait titan.

So, Anno responds by creating the theatrical finale of the series, End of Evangelion, and it was just one giant “fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck yooooooooooooooooooou” to the fanbase. The TV ending was a pretty positive, constructive resolution to Shinji’s plight, but given the backlash, Anno was basically OH, YOU WANT MORE EMOTIONAL TORTURE PORN? I WILL GIVE YOU THE EMOTIONAL TORTURE PORN and he delivers. If you watched EoE without actually watching the series, a lot of that context can go over your head. THAT scene with Shinji in the hospital room with Asuka? That was Anno basically pointing a finger at the otaku fans through the fourth wall and going THIS IS WHAT YOU’RE DOING, YOU’RE THIS f***ED UP, YOU SICK FREAKS. The irony is a large portion of the fandom DIDN’T GET IT and instead praised that scene to show Shinji was “maturing” and “growing up.”

Basically, End of Eva was one of the most beautifully animated middle-fingers ever to be conceived.
