It isn't, but data recovery is very expensive, serious and time consuming business. If they had to do data recovery on every non-functioning hard disk, you're practically guaranteed that everybody will be charged hundreds of USD for the RMA service and it will take months before they get their replacement hard disk with their (possibly incomplete) data back.
If the data is really important, i believe some people is willing to pay.

I didn't care because I already made a backup before the MyBook died.

Btw, normally they would replace your disk with a higher capacity version only if the original one is no longer in production. Which brings me to earlier question... is the 1TB no longer in production, if anyone knows?
On the commercial invoice it says:
CODE
WDH1CS20000N Hard Disk Drive 1 Units Made in Thailand Unit Price: 130.0000
Checked on WD's website and this is not a MyBook, just the hard disk alone.

Well, if its something as important as that, i wouldnt put my trust into a single HDD

I would make a backup, either in another HDD or burn them into a DVD as a permanent storage

If its really faulty, aka your content already not retrievable etc, then there is no point in not accepting a warranty.

If mine is faulty and content inside are very important, its either i find someone to retrieve it for me, or i forget about it and move on. In the end, i wouldnt mind receiving a brand new 1TB, not to mention, a 2TB in exchange

How many backup can we do, the 1st hdd can fail, the 2nd also can fail, even the 3rd might fail as well. Probably the chance will become mnimal, but there is still chance to fail all, right?

Maybe i am over worry.

CDs and DVDs loses data due to age. Most ten year old writable CDs and DVDs are unreadable.
Yeah, i think Cds and Dvds shall be our last option for back up. They are so fragile.
