I plan to get myself a portable harddisk. No idea at all what to get.

Purpose of using it will be to store picutures, music and videos.

Storage wise,I prefer the most cost effective capacity (In terms of RM per MB) . Any suggestion? 500MB or 1TB or any others

Transfer speed also I concern. Any relatioship between transfer speed and RPM? (Sorry for noob question)

Budget wise, any amount will do. As long as value for money. (Please don't treat this as 'no budget limit' thus suggest a super high end harddisk; 'value for money ' is the key words.)

It depends on what you need actually. There are alot of brands out there nowadays. I have the WD Passport and its ok for me as well. The same as those which i bought the HDD and case seperately smile.gif Buffalo seems to be a good brand as well.

I have posted my requirements at 'post #1030'
Any recomendation?

In term of portable, what do you mean? That you want to bring around places all the time or just on occasion?

If you wanted something that is value for money and in the range of 500 - 1TB, then you only have 3.5" External HDD as your choice. I got myself the WD MyBook 1TB for about RM390+ which i feel is quite good. It should cost lesser i believe at the moment. I believe most, if not all are roughly the same as well.

However, do keep in mind if you wanted to bring it to places all the time, then 3.5" can be more troublesome. As you will need to bring along a bigger HDD (as compared to 2.5") as well as a power cord. And the WD MyBook comes with a glossy finish as well which might get scratched if you move around alot. I think there is a matt finish version by WD as well on the MyBook series but should cost slightly more.

Anyway, if you wanted portability, i still recommend 2.5" ones as you have a smaller package, and minus the power cord. But of course, price for 500GB 2.5" is roughly around the same as the 1TB 3.5" i believe at the moment. So, your choice here. In regards to the brands, i still think all of them are roughly the same. Just stick with those branded ones like WD, Seagate, Buffalo etc.

Thanks for the reply. I've bought a Buffalo Mini Station with 'Turbo USB' feature.
Reasons being:-
1) Higher transfer speed with the bundle software.
2) Higher shock resistant with the shock resistant chasis.
3) Wrap arpund usb for easier carrying around.
RM 375 for 500GB

You still can use SATA 2 hdd if your Mobo does not support it.

1) Set jumper To run on legacy mode (150Mbps).

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/ph...li=&p_topview=1

2) A converter to convert your normal 4 pin Power supply to SATA power supply.

Hope this can help

Thanks for the info, it definitely help.

And You should get 7200.12 if you are a Seagate fan instead of just keep out of 7200.11 cause 7200.12 just using 2 plate .The performance will be better.
*
I am not a seagate fan, i plan to get them coz those shops around me only sell seagate. I am lazy to bring my pc dwn to LYP, coz i duno how to install the harddisk. tongue.gif

QUOTE(alexei @ Dec 30 2009, 07:37 AM)
Yeah... the 7200.11 problem mostly seen on 1GB drives. Not sure fixed yet not, but there's a newer bios than SD15, if I remember. One of my SD15 500GB died, but because raining bad sectors, not the known problem. biggrin.gif

After you buy, go online and check the warranty status... don't be like me, OEM drive no warranty one.
*
OEM drive? What is that? and how to check?(by series no.?)

I just bought WD My Book.
Any user here? Mind to share how you all transfer the file.
Either
1) Using the bunddle software
2) or just copy and paste from the window explorer?

I am using the software to transfer now, it seems complicated and slow.

Using the usual Plug & Play USB feature. No software installed. Occasional slight lag when accessing the HDD during its idling time but running well without any problem smile.gif

NO software installed, the hdd can be detected? I thought the software is also the driver for the hdd

Just wanna share my pleasant experience with WD.
I sent my WD MyBook 1TB for RMA last week (only the unit and power cable), and today I receive a 2TB version complete with the standard accessories (usb, firewire).  rclxms.gif
Is the 1TB version no longer in production?
*
What about the content i ur 1tb my book? If i lose my 1 tera content WD gives me back 100TB also i don't want oh. sweat.gif 'Touch wood!'

QUOTE(akachester @ Mar 8 2010, 04:40 PM)
Why cant it? smile.gif It comes with USB and Plug & Play features. Most of the time, the software bundled would allow you to do certain extra features like one touch backup or faster transfer speed etc but on the MyBook, i dont think i need to install the software smile.gif
LOL..! Making me feel i wanna destroy my MyBook tongue.gif
*
Make sure u transfer out all the data 1st oh. biggrin.gif

In fact, the reason why i bought My book 1tb while i already have 1 buffalo 500MB portable hdd. It is to make sure i don't lose all my phtographs, i plan to only store photos in it. tongue.gif

It isn't, but data recovery is very expensive, serious and time consuming business. If they had to do data recovery on every non-functioning hard disk, you're practically guaranteed that everybody will be charged hundreds of USD for the RMA service and it will take months before they get their replacement hard disk with their (possibly incomplete) data back.
*
If the data is really important, i believe some people is willing to pay.

QUOTE(cannavaro @ Mar 9 2010, 10:46 AM)
I didn't care because I already made a backup before the MyBook died. tongue.gif

Btw, normally they would replace your disk with a higher capacity version only if the original one is no longer in production. Which brings me to earlier question... is the 1TB no longer in production, if anyone knows?
On the commercial invoice it says:

CODE
WDH1CS20000N  Hard Disk Drive 1 Units Made in Thailand  Unit Price: 130.0000

Checked on WD's website and this is not a MyBook, just the hard disk alone.
*
QUOTE(akachester @ Mar 9 2010, 11:58 AM)
Well, if its something as important as that, i wouldnt put my trust into a single HDD smile.gif I would make a backup, either in another HDD or burn them into a DVD as a permanent storage smile.gif
If its really faulty, aka your content already not retrievable etc, then there is no point in not accepting a warranty. smile.gif If mine is faulty and content inside are very important, its either i find someone to retrieve it for me, or i forget about it and move on. In the end, i wouldnt mind receiving a brand new 1TB, not to mention, a 2TB in exchange smile.gif
*
How many backup can we do, the 1st hdd can fail, the 2nd also can fail, even the 3rd might fail as well. Probably the chance will become mnimal, but there is still chance to fail all, right? tongue.gif Maybe i am over worry. tongue.gif

QUOTE(everling @ Mar 9 2010, 01:17 PM)
CDs and DVDs loses data due to age. Most ten year old writable CDs and DVDs are unreadable.
*
Yeah, i think Cds and Dvds shall be our last option for back up. They are so fragile.
