Samsung HD745JJ (F3 1TB) vs HD103SJ (F3 750GB), which one is better in terms of value for money and performance, I'm just using it for my NAS, so >100MB/s throughtput is not necessary since gigabit ethernet only can achieve around 10-20MB/s ? I've bought a piece of the 1TB but feel a bit regret should get 2x of 750GB instead for my RAID1 because the 750GB is very cheap

Let me explain to u laa..

Spinpoint F3 for 500GB and 1TB only coz has 7200rpm speed
Spinpoint F3 EcoGreen (F3EG) for 1.5TB and 2TB coz has 5400rpm speed

The famous one is F3 500GB and F3 1TB coz its fast
*
How about 750GB? Why this model is not so popular compare to the rest? It is only RM10 more from getting the 500GB... ??

becoz just release recently.. u can try it out..

Any benchmark on this HDD currently? I can't seem to find it on the web now... if the difference is not big, then I'll probably exchange it with 2x 750GB instead of 1x of 1TB

u should check what antonio posted..
if in raid i think maybe around 250MB/s..

why not 2x1tb.. since u have one..
*
I'm not really concern about performance because I'll be using it for NAS purpose, since gigabit ethernet is only giving about 20MB/s. I have bought the 1TB yesterday but I can exchange it within 7 days, so now I need to make up my mind either to change it to 750GB or not because it is a lot cheaper than the 1TB.

Can anyone tell how much is the formatted capacity of this 750GB drive? I know the formatted capacity of the 1TB is around 960++GB.

raid will have better performance than single drive....

but even if u go single drive... ur drive kaput...all ur data gone. u go raid...ur drive kaput all ur data gone... so the kaput data thing is basically the same either way...

only thing is...with single drive u supposedly have less chances of the drive failing. some say raid0 can kill a hdd faster...i myself experienced a hdd kaputed during raid0. but then for that particular drive i wouldnt know if its lifespan would be better if i used it as a single drive. so hard to say.
and personally....id keep the 1tb instead of 750gb. u can never have too much space...

Yeah I know the trade-off of RAID 0, but I'm going to mirror it using RAID 1 instead, so for my case the performance is not really matter at least it should be on par with the 1TB, so for 2x of 750GB is definitely be a lot cheaper compare to 2x 1TB. Since many peoples are having good time with their 1TB, just wanna know if it is really far better than the 750GB.

1000 megabit/s / 8 bits = 125 megabytes/s

It's going to be a bit less in practice but should be much more than 10-20 MB/s.

I don't think in reality we can get that much of throughput after taken consideration of the latency, overhead, etc.... the average speed that I've got is 11MB/s, something wrong on my router?

Don't really know. Perhaps your router supports only 100 Mbps?

100 megabit/s / 8 bit = 12.5 megabyte/s
*
No, my router supports gigabit ethernet. Anyway any latest review on the Samsung 750GB HD754JJ?

Which brand you referring to? Samsung? I would say bigger better, faster, cheaper.
Get the Samsung, if it's cheaper.
*
Yes Samsung, but why bigger is faster? The 1TB is not cheap compare to 750GB

Mind tell me the price for 750GB and 1TB in your case? Cause I can't find 750GB in price list in this thread.
*
The gap between 750GB and 1TB is quite big. 750GB = RM170, 1TB = RM255

It is not nice and neat however.

Keep in mind that the 1 TB Samsung is already notably cheaper than the 1 TBs from other manufacturers. And now we have a 750 GB Samsung that is 66% of the 1 TB's pricing when it should be closer to 75%? It's a little strange when you consider the platters.

Iianm, there are 500 GB, 333 GB and 250 GB platters with nothing else in between. To make a 750 GB, you'd need two 500 GB, three 333 GB or three 250 GB platters. This suggests either they're making a loss, using defective platters or using leftover platters. If the 750 GB is indeed three 250 GB platters, the performance will be significantly less than the F3s. If it performs the same as the F3s, then it's using the 500 GB platters, the platters are likely to have some defect and Samsung is making a loss.
*
But I saw some site is saying the 750GB is actually using 2 platters but not sure what size

The only hard drive that failed on me was Samsung HDD. Maxtor (before joining with Seagate) and Western Digital works just fine for me even when up for 24/7 (with idle mode kick in of course).

What is the model and which year did the HDD manufactured? Recent years, Samsung has improved their reliability.
