Is it safe to use WD 1TB Black caviar for storage. Worried about hdd failure,

Shouldn't be a problem. If you dedicate it for storage and not operate it 24/7 the lifespan should be pretty long. I'm very confident of current generation of HDDs lasting 5 years of continuous use. The good thing is, when it is about to fail you should see the symptoms like abnormal operation noise (clicking, etc). Turn on SMART and keep a SMART utility running to keep tabs on the error rates.

If you value reliability and data retention, forget about RAID 0 unless you have another set of disks dedicated for performance operation. RAID 1 is good for mirroring. If you need performance and reliability then you may consider RAID 5 but that's pretty CPU intensive unless you have a dedicated controller for that. If RAID is not your taste, then you're fine with a single drive. Do remember that you need a stable system to begin with. Unstable SATA/IDE drivers can cause data corruption.

Prefer using it as single drive and runs on 24/7 system

Hi everybody, can someone explain to me the different between portable hardisk desktop, laptop, wd passport. The storage capacity as an ex 500gb to 1TB, is it compatible to any pc or it's still depends on the mainboard specs?

I would appreciate if someone can advice me coz I wanted to buy portable or external usb hard disk 500gb or 1TB. Currently my system is P4 2.4ghz, 1mb ram and intel mboard. Current hdisk 160sata + 320ide.

portable hardisk desktop=3.5" (bigger, need extra power adapter to power it)
portable hardisk laptop=2.5"(smaller, only 1 usb cable is enough to power it, unless ur computer is old tat requires 2)
wd passport=same like portable hardisk laptop, but it has more features such as data encryption, n more colour for u to choose tongue.gif
any external hdd is portable as long as u have usb ports...for 2.5", some old pc needs 2 usb port to provide enough power for the hdd, while most of the new pc need only 1 port

seagate, maxtor, WD, buffalo...all these brands r quite good....if u r getting the 500gb or 1tb, pls consider do u need firewire? the external hdd that has firewire costs more than external hdd that doesn't have a firewire port....what's the difference? firewire allows faster transfer speed, which matters alot when u are transferring few hundreds GBs, as USB transfer speed is ALOT slower than firewire

Famous brands such as WD, Seagate, Maxtor, Buffalo have quite good qualities...but FYI, none of the HDD promises "no data deletion/corruption/last long", as these kinds of problems are random n sometimes unexplainable...if any of the companies say that "our HDD has no data deletion/corruption/last long", they would be sued n become bankrup...because in mass production, surely among hundreds of HDD, few units are not working properly...also, it depends on how u take care of ur HDD to minimize data deletion/corruption/last long

I bought a WD Caviar Black 1TB - the same one that jimmylim85 asked about - and it developed read errors within a week. Fortunately, it was in a RAID1 with a Samsung 1TB (I deliberately bought a different make/model to rule out common causes of failure). Moral of the story - no matter what people tell you, never be blindly confident in single drives. Always have your data on RAID-1 (or other redundant config) and/or have a backup.

This statement belongs to 1999. RAID-5 is laughably CPU-intensive today. A modern CPU can handle thousands of MB/s of RAID5 XORs. That said, there are other good reasons to get a dedicated RAID controller - e.g. for the battery backup and port counts.

Very true.

my last WD 500GB hdd sent to RMA b4 & i dun dare try it again
is it ok if my hdd's temperature around 40 degree celsius??
my desktop pc is placed on living room, no air-cond & fan, just use ceiling fan only
my pc places quite hot during afternoon
current hdd also very near graphic card (less than 5 cm)
and beside my pc case got woofer( on casing right hand side), will it affect the air flow??
i currently insert 2 80mm casing fan aredi, 1 on back, and 1 on top ( near cpu position)
is it ok for my pc operates for nearly 24 hours everyday?? ( 13++hours for surfing net & normal usage, 6+hours for downloading, the rest used for casual on9 gaming & off9 gaming)

Based on your experience, since black caviar 1tb failed you, will the green power play a safer role as primary storage only.

Here's a question of logic and common sense: Let's say there's drive X and drive Y. If drive X fails on me, and I never bought drive Y before, does that mean drive Y is safer than drive X? Why? Why not? Think about it.

The Silent Killer has already said it well in his post #825. Read it.

A = It's normal temp at Malaysia

beside my pc case got woofer( on casing right hand side), will it affect the air flow??
A = Best avoid any woofer beside the pc or LCD

is it ok for my pc operates for nearly 24 hours everyday?? ( 13++hours for surfing net & normal usage, 6+hours for downloading, the rest used for casual on9 gaming & off9 gaming)
A = A lot of people running them everyday. If you worry try get an external hd 1TB or so on.Just plug in it to back up or buy a few stack of DVD to burn if you worry it spoil.

Hey, has anyone tried fitting a 2TB drive into a Coolermaster X-craft 350?

And... I have another question. I'm currently using a Barracuda 7200.10 320gb with the X-craft, and the hard disk sometimes powers down and up on its own - sometimes, it repeats this over and over again for minutes at a time. I know the HDD needs to be replaced, but does anyone think the X-craft might be part of the reason? Should I also replace the X-craft when I get a new external HDD?

Added on March 29, 2009, 10:29 amNevermind about the 2TB, guess I won't be getting one of those after all

i've got some questions here

1 - Between Western Digital Caviar Black, Blue and Green, which one is best for my use? Thinking using it as my main OS drive. I want to get the 320GB/500GB Black, but i don't think it's easy to find here..usually i only see Blue ones around..

2 - What's the difference between normal single drive and setting up drives in RAID 5? I don't think i'll be using RAID 1 or 0, coz i prefer having both speed and backup, but prefer speed a bit more. Which one would be better?
