Have you guys ever compared the iPhone/google maps combo to other mobile solutions such as mapking/garmin/malsingmaps combo?

Now that Maxis is launching the iPhone 3g officially (a bit expensive though). I use my N82/garmin/malsingmaps GPS quite often, just wondering if the iPhone/google maps, will have at least a similar-level of "performance" for the directions.

Meh, I haven't been able to download xgps off Cydia. Keeps giving me a md5 checksum error.

Added on March 17, 2009, 9:14 pmEh I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've downloaded the maps in windows n transferred to my iPhone. In xgps I can view the maps and I can get gps lock to show my position. But when I try to get driving directions no matter what I try it always errors, something like can't find the route. What gives? Did I miss a step somewhere?

[edit] here's the error i get.

I had a fit of rage at my iPhone last week. Was trying to get some maps desperately cos I was lost somewhere in Seremban, but I couldn't get a lock for fifteen minutes.

Then when I finally got the lock, the phone would keep losing it for a minute or two at a time. So annoying.

This never happened with my old Nokia sad.gif

As if i use native googlem map in door, google map able to detect my current GPS location...

Google maps won't be able to detect your location using GPS indoors either. What you are seeing is the approximate location based the "A" portion of the A-GPS (i.e. using cellular data & approximating based on nearby comms towers).

Anyway I had a moment of utter frustration with Google Maps last Saturday. Needed to attend a function at Malaysia Tourism on Jalan Ampang. Since the location was available on Google Maps I didn't bother doing any further research on where the place was.

Turns out the location based on Google Maps was WRONG! The actual MaTic place was about 1km on Jalan Ampang nearer to KL than the info on GM, made me late for my function by about 15 mins after frantically calling up people & trying to find a map online. Zzzzz.
