for me, iphone gps is just an extra tool for me to find road, it not really like garmin to bring me to there, but i just wanted to know where i am, and how to get to my point by browsing the map.
On that, i created my own offline maps from cydia, and covers KL , PJ, KLANG. although i dont know why i cant get the last zoom( 64x, where it shows the precise roads name) but it still helpfull for me to use around,
If anyone interested, i will upload it to somewhere for dl, it about 63mb, and anyone can teach me get the last zoom from google maps, pls do tell me.

Steps to use
1) Use cydia Dl the offline maps apps
2) Open SSH
3)Put Maptiles.sqlitedb and com.apple.maps.plist into /var/mobile/media/maps
4) open offline maps apps, select KL then press Copy ( to make cache in the original maps apps, then press link)
5) if all correct, it should display the map in Iphone Maps without using any online connection
@Sugen
Currently there is no route from google map for malaysia, therefore cannot create a route files, the offline apps is included the offline route only problem is google maps itself does not have malaysia route. If there have, maybe i can learn how to install offline routes.

sugen,
as i mentioned, the iphone is using google maps. only route can be make is using google maps route which no available to malaysia map YET. Other solution should be like a App called "Path tracker" where it can route the map but u need to do it manually b4 you left ur house/place. Such other program such nokia bro mentioned also

i try to answer the questions, but i cannot guarantee i am 100% correct.
1) yes, you can pinpoint yourself with gps with offline maps, I tried go from wangsa maju here to pj, and i dun lose a single cent from my credit.
2) According to my experience and reading, somehow gps in iphone is using AGPS to work, with another word say, it uses tower to pinpoint location therefore the 3G or Edge must be enabled. So, when at plane, u cannnot pinpoint ur location i think. After all, when you in airplane are not suppose to send any signal out, it might disturb the plane functions ( you can try ask string bro about this, i not really sure myself)
You can use GPS as well without the 3g network but, it only work at open air (at house failed, double tinted car failed). that y i mention using A-GPS is better when you in the car.

QUOTE(little ice @ Oct 7 2008, 02:28 PM) thanks for the great info, it's indeed a good news that gps still can be used with offline map! regarding the airplane mode, just for example if my sim got no roaming or i simply dun want to use my sim card when i'm on vacation and travelling, not neccessary on the plane. but if it doesn't work totally offline (just rely on gps itself) wouldn't it a little useless? time for some reading off google... You can try take off your sim card and see gps work anot, i modify my post earlier, because i always in car or somewhere where gps signal is hard to receive that y i use Agps, if you in open air, GPS can use even with everything is turned off (using bosspref)

ya, compared to N95 my fren told me, not 1 but 2 of them said that if u use nokia routes, you hit wall already if u follow the instructions.
A good GPS will have appox 5m to 10m differences, Iphone have about 20m to 30m accuracy , but overall i tried , it very accurate.
If you are drivers, you not really depends on route, but rather take it as guide, of course when it say turn only u turn , you bang wall like N95 GPS lol

QUOTE(lee82gx @ Oct 14 2008, 05:23 PM) Been reading this thread with fascination. Currently with Google maps and a data connection, are we actually able to at least know our location and view the map ? (sorry I'm a Iphone-wanna-buy) to be precise, as long u can lock the gps to your phone, it will show a "blue" dot indicate where are you in the google map( as you say with data communication)

OMG!! TIME TO LEARN TO DL THE ROUTE OFFLINE AhHAHAHAAHHA
(Sad news, there is no software can dl the whole route, only can use wifi, route then import it to offline map...T_T) @mango,
you can try my method, i once had problem like you in my earlier post, try switch wifi or edge then try locate ur self, you prolly get a appox location. then now off everything, try locate again, or on 3g then locate. you should be able lock on to gps satellite

go earlier page, i have upload KL offline maps. pray my link still active and also some simple guide to use as well.
it work the same as normal maps just no need data rate involve and if you route the roads already then u press start and cache all the routes, it work same as offline map route.
I only know how to create route(offline) from point A to B not whole KL pre-route , who know pls share..

it very complicated. if you study communication subject, u will understand about fading signal, signal strength , multipath + etc that affect the signals
best try outside to see if the gps work anot.

you should ssh the 2 files in the rar not the zipped 1.you also must create a folder call KL in the maps folder. I think I did mention at earlier post. Ya as Sam mention is the 2 files not the rar
