@sugen there would be limitations definitely for the developers to develop something that huge up, additionally putting maps on to the phone requires huge databases which small time developers don't have the privilege to have
anyway my question would be, if we have offline maps downloaded and SSH-ed into our phone...let's say i'm using the 2G variant, can i just use the tower triangulation thing to pinpoint my location?

QUOTE(mmmbop @ Jul 24 2009, 12:49 PM) Pardon me, I'm browsing this thread in search of getting news of how exactly iphone gps application fare but now I can't help but to intervene. The lack of understanding of what is GPS and the difference between A-GPS and GPS amongst most of the loyal iphone owners here annoyed me. GPS in phone is a chip which receive the signal from GPS satellite. By using this receiver and with appropriate software, you'll get your location without paying a single cent. A-GPS (Assist GPS) meanwhile not entirely true a GPS receiver. It is called A-GPS because from the name itself it assisting the GPS. It does not even depends on the GPS signal but purely on the data provided by your telco. That is the reason data charge will be imposed upon using A-GPS. A-GPS of course will be faster because data is provided by tower triangulation of the telco. But it will never be as accurate as the GPS itself. Get the fact right guys! wrong, get your facts right before disseminating, iPhone is indeed using A-GPS, and with navigation developers like Sygic and TomTom coming into the picture, the A-GPS supported by the iPhone will turn into a GPS, due to the preloaded maps and the Built-In GPS Chip, which purely doesnt rely on data transmission from your local telco provider but the GPS chip itself.

sygic's maps are pretty outdated, it didnt actually have the directions to my place as well, so i literally need to "fly" to my place.
i'm still waiting for tom tom to be official, hopefully the maps are better
