I think our wrong concept of using GPS in iphone needs 3G/EDGE's data connection is rooted in our mind.. To make things clear, a general GPS device does not need all this.. Why iphone need this if u are using their native google maps.. BECAUSE, the google map is not store on the iphone.. Therefore, each time u use the NATIVE iphone google map for GPS navigation.. 3G/EDGE is needed to LOAD the map..

Tomtom, Sygic STORED maps INTO iphone... Same like Garmin & others GPS device.. So, NO 3G/EDGE data services is needed.. hope this is clear to all..

agreed. for those who dun want to get charged for using maps, u hv da option of using offline maps from cydia or thr is tis new app in app store...
OFFmaps
same function as cydia's offline maps

Yes Sugen. I am aware of that. I was using Sygic. With 3G/EDGE turned off the phone didn't seem to be able to lock my position. With both turned on however, my location is detected within a minute. But this could be an isolated case. Will further test it smile.gif

I don't understand what it is that you're testing by switching off GPRS but keeping the roaming on? Care to explain a lil further?

If Ur going to have to pay for data usage, Y don't U just turn the GPRS data on?

Kinda noob question here...

So far what i understand is...

3g/edge/any data connection <--- (Something we need to pay) is only being applied to download map?

And for the gps service is totally free if we already have application such as mentioned before?

OS 3.0 will take less than 2 seconds to triangulate your location via GPS. however, if you are in a confined building, it may pose some difficulties.

loading of the map will depend on your network connection of course.

GPRS > EDGE > 3G > HSDPA (not available for iPhone locally yet)

boss..
firstly, u must understand tat u r being charged for using maps as a gateway 2 use da gps service...maps app doesnt hv preloaded map data hence requiring da phone 2 use data services 2 get da map...
da other apps, they hv preloaded specific countries map data with da app...so, thr is minimal data used
da gps, is always free.. its a chip in da phone which connects to certain satellites to determine ur location...
its da app which u hv which determines whether u r being charged or not..smile.gif

As we all know that the iPhone 3G and 3GS got GPS.
And from what I know, the GPS itself is free.
But we need to download the maps from Google Maps.
Either using the 3G or wi-fi to access the internet, both terms can be used to download the maps.
And you have to pay if you're using the 3G and some wi-fi that requires login account such as tmnet hotspot etc.

ok, my questions are :

if we have used the GPS before in some particular locations and have downloaded the maps, is it possible to use the GPS at the same place later on other day/time?

if that method works, can we download mass maps, save it in the phone, and use the GPS freely?

in short, using Maps to triangulate your current position won't get you charged for any data usage. however, the routing function will require your phone to download the maps thus connecting to 3G/EDGE/GPRS services.

so if you don't wanna get charged for that, get GPS navigation apps from Sygic or TomTom (not out yet). or like what some have mentioned, Offline Maps from Cydia or OFFmaps from App Store.

P/S: for GPS usage/discussions, the proper thread is share your iphone 3G GPS usage

Say for Sygic and Tom Tom (in the near future), if there are future updates or upgrades to the maps, do we need to subscribe (in short pay additional?) for it? or it's free already?

Hmm yes I am aware of this that data roaming is oni useful when u outta countery.

But I am not sure why, if I left the the Data Roaming turn off (+ 3G off) then the GPS is unable to get the signal.

The first I thought the Sygic will be a perfect solution for when travelling abroad (since I have a garmin with me). But again, the data usage to the get the signal of cell tower, is unconfirm charge $ or not.
