A blog system it is. Arguably it can be customized into a CMS, but since I cant think of a category for that, a blog system it is.

i think the fact that wordpress.com is a blog and even wordpress.org sez

QUOTE
WordPress is a state-of-the-art publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.

More simply, WordPress is what you use when you want to work with your blogging software, not fight it.

New to blogging? Learn more about WordPress, then follow the three easy steps below to start blogging in minutes. Or, for the ultimate in ease of use, get a free blog on WordPress.com.

if you look at WP right at the installation, it is a blog already. an actual CMS would be a CMS right after installation, eg Joomla.

Wordpress CMS system is pathetic at best, so tedious to sort page order.

haiyah if like that we might as well list out all the search engines. biggrin.gif like that then this thread pointless already.

but 2 things i think good for webmaster

1. Google Webmaster Tool
2. Yahoo SiteExplorer.

It depends on the requirement of the author also bah. If you want the page to display some contents and doesn't require much update, any web app will do.

But if you have large volume of content you would choose a good CMS to help you organize your content.

if your website has new content any now and then and you would like to get response from visitors, blogging software will be better bah

yes. correct.

if update not often, the don't even need CMS. smile.gif just standard HTML site will do.

of course, some people don't know how to HTML so CMS would be helpful. i did my friend's site using Wordpress as CMS

I developed my own CMS also (for not much content but don't want to type in HTML code when update page)

pretty simple and light weight, no fancy fancy feature of monster like CMS. Most important is you can update content fast and easy

web programming is one thing, web graphics is another.

if you want to develop websites alone, you need both. otherwise, find someone who can do web graphics to team with you.

if you already got the skills, just go find work. tell your parents. tell your family, friends, etc. thats the best way to start off. once you have a portfolio to show, clients come in by themselves usually.

Do a form maker first, because it is almost useful for each website, make a site editable, make the functions you made have to consider several websites those might requires.

Once you make a powerful CMS or functions, you can always use it oftenly with each website, means you become less work to work for it, and can give cheap price for your client, if you client will be happy with your hight performance and cheap quotation, they will ask or intro you some client for you, just be honestly what charge.

Also, be careful during discussing quotation, make sure you are almost understood what are the exact requirements of your client.

Added on December 19, 2008, 8:01 pmif you want to be a good web programmer, try to work maintenance website, it is good for you to think how bad of their code, e.g a small changes for you actually need such much works, a big changes for you actually, just need a small works.

Think about it, it is very exciting, if you would like think it.

wirdpress is more of a blog system, although sometimes used as a general-type CMS.

if you need good functions, its easier to use real CMSs like Joomla or Drupal. Simpler CMSs, if you need, one of it is called CMS Made Simple.

No problem smile.gif

some tips for you:
1) learn to use photoshop to create website images. many can't make good website images, especially those only focusing on coding.
2) learn HTML and CSS first, then mvoe on to PHP or ASP. your choice.

You want something like photobucket or flickr?
I don't such site can works, it's difficult to get people's trust to upload photos in your site. They will think you're small site and maybe their photos may lost some day.

This is my 2 cents. No offence. sweat.gif

Everything a webmaster needs...erm...shouldn't we include AJAX too, it's the trend now wink.gif

Here's some javascript libraries.

jQuery
mooTools
Prototype

and CSS framework:

bluePrint
YUI Grid
960 Grid system

It's best to understand the underlying technology used before you simply venture into using a CMS, framework or libraries, that is if you really want to be a serious webmaster wink.gif

TS, the 1st post is all about website building resources. I think we somehow neglect post some simple step in making 1 website (must be online).

Here let me contribute some brief idea to those that dunno how to make a website.
QUOTE
Website can be in dynamic or static.
- A dynamic web page function like a program and it serve pages base on different request by a user (eg: forum).
- A static web site consists of pages that are pre-build and content are same every time you visit the same page.
To host your website/making it online (a.k.a viewable by anyone with internet)
- You need to find a web host (there are free and paid hosting)
- A web host will store all your web pages (static or dynamic) on a server (webserver).
- Upon visitor request (like typing in the URL http://something.com) the webserver will serve the pages on the server to your visitor.
- A domain name is used to identify a server (web server) similar to the name of your computer. So that one no need to type in IP address when visiting.
- Domain name such as (something.com, .net, .info, .biz, .org) need to register (buy frm registrar and then they register with ICANN) before you own it and use it.
- To upload your file, there are few method. Most common method is through FTP (known as File Transfer Protocol). You need to have a FTP client in order to connect to the server and upload your files.
Any mistake feel free to comment and you are welcome to add anything i miss. But plz dun make it very complicated that newbie wont be able to understand.

In order for you to make your website being able to accept payments online, you need to consider a few things.

First question to ask is this : "Is your customer Malaysian or foreign?" This is because, normally most Malaysians do not have PayPal, and implementing Paypal will not be a good option, as Paypal requires you to have an account signed up with them before they can pay with their Credit Cards. Normally, people will just leave your website when they found out they need to sign up to Paypal to pay you as it is too troublesome. A better alternative would be to get a system from www.Ipay88.com which is a Malaysian Payment Gateway system which is cheap and affordable.

Second question to ask is this : "What is the transaction or setup charges?" Most companies out there will charge you a hefty setup fee, like RM 1000 before you even make your first online dollar. If your target market is overseas, use PayPal and if they don't have PayPal, offer them another payment option which is Credit Card payment. There are other payment systems out there, such as WorldPay and 2Checkout, but as Malaysians, it is best to have a Malaysian office based payment gateway which you can call for customer service. I would again recommend IPay88.

Hope this helps you yeah.

I am setting up an online store. Currently situated at Australia (studying). I am into a new business venture with my fellow mates and was planning to open up an online store. I have experiences with website setup, so I took up position as webmasters.

I am looking to design websites like bytelove.com, threadless.com and snorgtees.com . I believe they use Joomla or Magento.. (just assuming, here's the question). I am unable to find a good guide on both of the CMS plateform. Can anyone share any links to good guides?

You can now setup a website with easy integration of Paypal to accept payment online for your products or services.

Or you can install a shopping cart with your website. Some of the popular shopping cart software such as Cubecart and Zencart should be setup easily by following their setup guides.

You can choose to install the shopping cart software directly from the CPanel, a web hosting management software that included with web hosting plan such as from www.iwebhosting.com.my

For professionals, image editing requires something more efficient and has smooth workflow like Photoshop, coupled with Flash, Fireworks, Illustrator, etc.

use photoshop.
or word maybe. one of my clients did that smile.gif

as long as he is a designer.. a real one.. you dont need to show him what it must look like. just tell him, and make adjustments later.

hope it helps smile.gif

I am researching about Online Payment system, so far still blur about it...

So I want to ask; What kind of Online Payment we can integrate into our website? I think it should be Credit Card or online-credit like Paypal only? Banking Deposit is not possible, right?

But where do I get those System to integrate into a website?

GIMP is free, but I dont know many professionals using it.

The reason professionals choose photoshop is because adobe provides good support and future development. As a free product, GIMP cant provide that as good as Adobe.

I believe you already have a web hosting? If that's the case, then the 'interface' that you see is a preset by the hosting company. Just remove the index file from its root directory and upload your files there.

Ok, all the best! thumbup.gif

Hi,
Find the correct directory to upload your website.
In some cases, you might see "public_html" in your hosting account which you can access by using FTP software such as FileZilla or CuteFTP.

You can set the homepage in your website as index.html with no much problems.
You always seek helps from hosting providers regarding your problems.
Good Luck!

It is not necessary for you to include the full image url link on your webpage. Just upload the original image folder to your hosting account and try to execute your website and see. Everything will be as same as with the webpage image you saw on your local machine.
It will be advantage for both of the live website at your hosting account and also when you are testing your website on your local machine.

Hi Robbylover89, if it's for an event and you need something quick and easy to manage, I suggest you consider weblog (website+blog) such as Wordpress.com or Blogger.com. Wordpress and Blogger are free to use and they come with well-designed templates for you to choose from. Please PM/email if you need any helps!

Blogger.com, Wordpress.com or Tumblr.com would be your best and fastest methods to get a free website up and running.

Tumblr is really taking off now as it's simple and really well integrated with video, audio, image posting and with a large selection of free designs to choose from, it can look really nice as well.

What is easier than xsitepro? It is easy to use, but very very VERY limited functions.
It is like using Microsoft words 2000.

yourdomain.wordpress.com is the free wordpress blog just like .blogspot.com. If you bought your own domain and have your own hosting, you can install Wordpress and use it with your own domain name.

Some of the terms above are very simple words while others aren't. So if I went and search for phpWCMS for example, I can easily find it. But if I go for say, Templates Express, I get too many related returns. I am uncertain which one is the above info referring to. Newbie mar.... need some guide lo. Thanks. Happy New Year.

Hi, I am looking to create a flash animation (is this what you guys call it?) like a banner that changes its image every one or two seconds.

and I can't seem to find any websites offering such things for free. I'm on a budget on designing my website, recommendations are welcome on which type of flash generators (preferably free) that's available.

Thank you

Awesome pinned post!

If I had anything else to add here it would be:

Color Management - http://colorschemedesigner.com/

It's not all about the coding. Websites should look good if possible of course. This web tool helps with color management and even has a mock up preview for light/dark settings.

Although it is a general guideline, there are somewhat several methods to calculate colors that go well together.

By default, all colors appear at standard saturation. Don't forget to tweak the color saturation / contrast to get best results.

Other tools are are very important and should not be missed out:

FILEZILLA - a robust GNU FTP prog.

WAMP SERVER - another awesome GNU effort. WAMP server allows your PC to act as an offline server. This is important to test mySQL databases and PHP pages among other things offline before uploading it live.

POST CAST SERVER - a GNU mail server emulator. Use this in conjunction with WAMP in order to test automated mails or to catch SMTPs - all done offline. A useful testing tool before live uploads.

The tools above really should not be left out of the list.
Very essential stuff.

As a general note: Always go for GNU products first and foremost, except in a few exceptional cases. GNU stuff, developed by the public for the public are usually very robust (some even better than proprietaries) because it is coded and refined by hundreds if not thousands of internet coders. Even companies find that hard to beat. And best of all: It's FREE

thatsound: Google up or torrent "Flash banner templates" and then just edit those if you want something simple. It's the closest you will get to free Flash stuff.

Real 100% customised flash applets that look professional(no ads, fades nicely, fits your site perfectly, uses your logo, uses your web theme) are hard or even impossible to get because no one does that kind of work for free.

You can also try these:
http://www.123-banner.com/
http://www.bannersnack.com/en/

Pretty decent alternative solutions for limited budget IMHO.

er, perhaps you should understand what you're talking about first.

#1 - that post was back in 2008.

#2 - you should see what was the reply in context to. smile.gif google.com however is still a search engine.

#3 - in reference to your profile / signature - Google Sites is not a website building tool. which is why you don't see blogspot listed here either. smile.gif

We're talking about website building tools, not sites like blogspot, wordpress.com, google sites and others. smile.gif

No problem smile.gif

some tips for you:
1) learn to use photoshop to create website images. many can't make good website images, especially those only focusing on coding.
2) learn HTML and CSS first, then mvoe on to PHP or ASP. your choice.
*
Agreed..
1.Should've know the different type of image files..It will determine of how fast it will load without jeopardizing the image quality.Illustrator will a lot if u r
creating the vector image.
2.It is the core for the websites that we are viewing.Even if we are using CMS like joomla, knowledge in HTML,CSS and PHP will help a lot to customize the templates or build your own.

Thanks for sharing such useful information with us. I really appreciate your work; it helpful for a newbie. I am also building my website using WordPress. While searching on the internet, I found an online tutorial called Open Website Tutorials. It helped me a lot. It has valuable information both for newbies and experts also.

Normal life blog or the commercial one? Need a complex user interaction or just a normal post comment one?

lf you mean just a normal blog site you just need to register a Wordpress account and follow the simple one page instruction.

Already good to go to have your new default website. Super easy, friend.

The best CMS currently or the one with increased scalability for the large number of plugins is Wordpress. There are many a huge quality plugins for almost any function that exists for the current websites in the world.
Wordpress is true that began as a blogging platform, but now it's much more than that. It has become what is now called editing platform in the cloud.
It is a fact that many companies, businesses, individuals, corporate sites, government, education centers, etc ... They have developed your site based on Wordpress.

I highly recommend Wordpress as a platform for our websites. For me better than the rest

Definitely some good options for making websites in this thread tongue.gif I stumbled upon a pretty cool function that could help new sites as well. It's the website checker from www.1and1.com, which does things like checking search engine visibility and the performance, so worth a shot smile.gif

Guys,

I'm quite a newbie in this trying to learn, but want to ask the experts here what are the fundamental things I must make sure is in place for a website which will include:

- Heavy (training) videos (which are downloadable for a price)
- Has a forum
- Has a blog

And the website I want to make is using this one as a platform to copy to an extent: https://iqoption.com/en

Can Wordpress cover this? And I'm meeting a web developer tomorrow, what are the main things I need to ask and understand from him?

Also I'm currently hunting for someone who is a web developer + IT Savvy since this will be more of a partnership for the next few months, not just to develop a website for me and then byebye. Have a few things which I think I need to keep in touch withe the developer to continue evolving the site.

Anyone want to use my website as a project for themselves to work on, most welcome to contact me.

Any help appreciated.

Great content!
However, Wordpress.org is more than just blog content management system. It can be also a CMS!
I also recommend some Open Source eCommerce or Wordpress + WooCommerce combo for starters.

there's no need to learn photoshop for web design. What you need is html for web content, css for styling and javascript for motions and functions.

Hi all.

I need help on my blog.
If anyone can advise me for below, kindly pm me.

I was trying to add some ad script to my Blogger blog, using other ad network and not AdSense.

Would you kindly advise :

#1. How to insert ad banner script correctly to blogger NOTABLE theme xml template ?

For example :
...just below the post title
...in middle of post
...at the end of post

.
I would like the ads to show up below the post title, also in between the post content in every of my blog post.

I tried insert the ad banner script into Blogger HTML/Java script gadget, but the ad didn't show up in my blog.
.
Then i also tried a few other tweaks in the existing Blogger xml template codes, the ad still not showing up.

.
#2. The only device to access internet I have is a mobile smart phone.

Would you advise how to move around the gadget box positions under Layout of Blogger ?

Because in mobile device those boxes cannot be "drag and drop" as in desktop
.

I've taken out the ad script and restored back the default Blogger NOTABLE template.

Thanks in advance.

It's actually depend on your purpose. WP has more features and control and it's more flexible. Blogger has limited function and support. If you fancy .blog, then you can choose this Wordpress Hosting Plan, they provide free domain (.blog, .com, .asia etc)

I am new to the scene. I see some websites allow user to upload files, process them in the background, then update the webpage with download of output files.

For example, I want to allow user to upload image file onto my website, then I will run a Windows program to add watermark onto it, finally offer download of the output image on the same webpage.

Currently I am using Linux hosting package. I see I can do it with PHP scripting language (with Imagick extension to process image, etc). How is it possible to run program like Python and C# in the background?

I have totally no idea in this area.

It depends on your requirements to the site. For the most part, you`ll be more than satisfied with online constructors, like wix or wordpress. For a more personalized stuff, you`ll need to write it yourself (or hire a professional to do it).

I have done a simple webpage template using HTML +CSS+JavaScript. (Most of the JavaScript are taken from the Internet)

Please let me know if you are planning to use my template, it is free for you to download as I share it on here.
(But to add content on the webpage, you have to open the index.html using text editor like Notepad, there is no admin page or control panel, no , there's none)

I am using Wix to build my website and feel that it is easy to use and is 1 stop solution that is pretty straight forward. Wix provides very useful template and free photos to start. If it is for business, you can choose the best payment option for customers to pay you. They also have professional email, domain, customer management, invoicing etc. You can link your social media and Wix come with SEO to allow you get found on Google. I would suggest to try Wix first so that you will get a better idea how to build a website. It will save you a lot of time. Create Your Free Website | Wix.com

Not sure why this reply keep blocking me from giving you the code snippet code. I just send you the snapshot then

Highlighting Code Snippet in an HTML Page, you often use the <pre> and <code> tags in tandem. The <pre> tag defines preformatted text and is used to display text as it's written in the HTML source code. The <code> tag defines a piece of computer code and is often used inside the <pre> tag to preserve both whitespace and line breaks.

For example:

Refer to attahment

With this setup, a copy button will appear when you hover over the code snippet, and clicking the button will copy the code to your clipboard.
