I have 3.06 Northwood, and my housemate has 3.0 Prescott.
I mainly hardcore game and u all knw that prescott runs hot...we all know that.
would I see any real difference if I used the Northwood instead ?The only difference is the cache......
I wanna stick the Northwood in to lower my temps...
FYI,prescott has a larger cache, but it also has a deeper execution pipeline...
Prescotts pipeline has 31 stages while Northwood's has got 20 only. A 31 stage pipeline can be very difficult to stoke...
even with a large cache...
Prescott may have double the L2 cache,, but keep in mind that the length of the pipelines is long on the prescott, which mean it takes longer to perform the same instructions as northwood...
also, a northwood at the same clock speed is faster than a prescott because it wolud be harder for the prescott to keep those pipelines full...
so prescott should have the extra cache in order to keep those pipelines busy.

At 3.0/512/800 and 3.0/1M/800, the northwood will come out on top in nearly all cases...

for stock, sure la northy is better....until the prescott's get o/ced...of course, the prescott needs some super cooling....that's where the pressie overtakes the northy....in the o/c range....
@Lord_sepulchrave
Yea. Agreed with ur statement. Clock to clock without OC, Northwood is leading. But in OC preference, Prescott is shine when it hit high FSB, and it can clock better/further. Northwood is build with 130nm chip where i believe that is the part that limiting the OC ability.
yup...fylon's right....the pressie thrives on o/c....but conventional cooling is the problem here...
