Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L. For non-aura photos, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L is used. biggrin.gif

Photos taken during KLPF2008 a month ago. All photos are quite soft due to shake. Not hand shake but people shaking me. Pity my IS lens. Bring on the comments and critiques.

I did post-processing on laptop and it looks fine on my laptop. My screen is not calibrated, so pardon me. I shall note that I should make it brighter next time. The shots are done in 0eV and JPEG (big mistake).

Every monitor have different display characteristics; colour, brightness, contrast and gamma. Calibration is a process to adjust your monitor to conform with the widely acceptable standards.

Check here to see if your monitor is up to standard. Mine isn't.

Get a RM300+ spyder pro and you can use on all laptop and desktop that you have. Otherwise look for a friend who has it and pay him some money to do it for you. Think again, you could buy a device and do it for your friends for a small amount of money. wink.gif

I learned it from a website, so I don't take credits for it. However, I lost the bookmark after I got a virus attack. I can brief you the steps, it's actually simpler than the other photo's processing.
1. Let photoshop draw vertical guides at 25%, 50% and 75% position.
2. Use rectangular marquee tool to select the first 25% portion.
3. Create a new adjustment layer and select Hue/Saturation.
4. A dialog box will appear. Check colorize option and slide the hue option. That gives the colour.
5. Repeat for 50% and 75% position.
6. Blend mode for all layers should be "Color"
7. Clear the vertical guides.
8. Select the 75% position layer. Select Stroke from Layer Styles.
9. Stroke size 1px, black colour, Inside position; to draw the black line.
10. You can either repeat for all layers or copy the layer style to one another. Done!

Edit: The name of this PP is called Colorize.

Getting tired to process portraits, time for a casual shot. This photo is shot using Tokina AT-X Pro 10-17mm f3.5-4.5 lens, courtesy of Vincent Pang. This UWA fisheye lens provide almost 180 degree view on the camera. You can see all 3 CENTRE COURT sign except for the one behind me. A good lens for its value.

hi, can i ask how u got the moon shot? its really nice.

i've been toying around w my semi-pro camera and its really hard to get nice moon/night shots.

some tips pls, thank you smile.gif
*
Hi. Great to hear that you like it. Your prosumer camera should be able to take the moon photo well. I used a focal length of 200mm, which your prosumer should be able to reach. I had assistance from Image Stabilization lens, allowing me to shoot at 1/20s, f/4 aperture. ISO 1600 was used. No photoshopping required.

Easy-wat. Get a studio or just ask her out on a photoshoot.

pssst...don't forget to call me. rolleyes.gif

And the girl you mentioned familiar, she is to me. smile.gif

She was one of the cosplayers during the Sony PS3 Launch. I believe Eddy also should be familiar with her since he was there. tongue.gif

So what were you packing at PC Fair? 17-40?

Sure, be tuned in to the forum and we shall have a photoshoot before the end of this year, at least a gathering.
I only used a single lens during PC Fair, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS. The lens have great advantage in crowded places like PC fair; razor sharp and large range from 24mm wide to 105mm telephoto.

Yea. That's why I've ultimately decided too what lens I'll be getting next - 24-70 f2.8. I'd like to not shoot with Flash (if possible) and have nice bokeh. wink.gif

After on a 1.6x crop, it should be just nice - for me. *grin*

Some months ago, all my lens are f/2.8 and below, shooting bokeh for almost everything. Now I'm getting anti-bokeh. I prefer razor-sharp photos.

Pictures very nicely exposed in your PC Fair III photos. Did you use a diffuser? Which diffuser? What angle was it bounced? Did you have to compensate the flash power?

Thanks.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I have used the powerful Canon 580EX II flash with a Gary Fong lightsphere diffuser to create lambert light that resembles studio lights. Flash is fired straight up, no angle required because it's a lightspere. No compensation required with ETTL II. The light at +0 is sufficient to light up nearby booth itself.

However the lightsphere is quite heavy and it dropped several times when I walk in the crowded Hall 1-5. Not as portable as the ordinary stofen.

Part II

#1 has the best compo. the rest is a bit lack of balance. Some over blown skin, you need to trust your camera ISO capability more. Flash can be optional sometimes. laugh.gif

Thanks eddychstu! I don't have a calibrated screen and such comment is very important to me. I had many underexpose comments so I pushed my camera's histrogram higher since the PC fair shoot. So it looks like I've compensated too much and I need to reduce in my future shoot.

I do trust my camera's ISO capability. I shoot at ISO1600 without hesitation. If I have not mistaken, all the Pioneer photograph are shot at ISO800.

Uttery disagree with u. The car should be more important than the girl on a pic. Or more like the girls is complementing the car in the picture.

Well in these shows, u hardly can take the car as ur subject as there are lack of cool looking cars deserve to be taken pics, unless if its during KLIMS or any motorshow. So i can understand mengsuan urgency to take more chicks than the cars coz i will do the same if i were him.

#1 is lame to me - makes this pretty girl look over-flirty.

#2 and #3 is sweet though - shows her emotion from inside wub.gif #3 needs a bit more ideas on the poses though, she looks like she wants to fall asleep. whistling.gif

Anyway, I personally don't like the car audio show sets, the girls don't look THAT pretty compared to some models I've seen others shoot. And yes - I think the girl should compliment the car, not the car compliment the girl.

I wow'd at the #1 picture.

Just to be picky >_< errr... there's a bag in #3 behind the model which could serve to be distracting. And in #6, honestly I'm unsure but the mirror kena chop off halfway... was that intentional as part of the composition or would it be better if we left the whole mirror in?

Just learning from you! I like your pictures in general anyway! Colours thumbup.gif

The focus point is at the fingers holding the fan. At f/1.4, the DOF is very shallow to control.

Hey, the pc fair photos are nice =)
Mind sharing how u capture the 1st photo (panasonic showgirl aka shook yee)?
You are using prime lens right... So what ISO did you use, and how did you fire the flash?

Im using D40+kit lens+Nissin di622 so the noise control and lighting is not that good. I use a bounce card and bounce the flash, but it seems a bit harsh too.

See the following pic

I was using manual flash mode from my flash Nissin Di622, not TTL. TTL will be underexposed a lot. I bounce the flash, not direct flash, but it still shows some harsh flash on the face and the background is not illuminated, only the person. How can I improve? I only have one lens though. ISO 400 is already my limit, ISO 800 too noisy for my camera...

PC fair's lighting condition is pretty harsh I would say. Most of the time the photographers will face gears limitation instead of wrong setting. Having said so, you guys are just lucky that they brighten up the area this time. smile.gif

Yea i agree this time's outcome is better than august's pc fair and the previous ones. Last time I bounce flash even with 1/2 power @ ISO 400 it will be either underexposed or very harsh. Hmm, upgrading body or upgrading lens help in my condition?

The previous PC Fairs, shooting with 40D also can die. Pretty tough weh. Better body has better noise control. Certainly that would help a lot. You get faster shutter speed, you don't need to manually tune your flash power. Better lens has bigger aperture hence you don't need to step down too much to get sharp pictures.

Perhaps a D90 paired with 50mm F1.8 or Tammy 17-50mm F2.8 will be a good upgrade...
But just the D90 body is already a wallet killer... I don't have income, only have PTPTN to support my daily needs and school fees. I hope i can save up to that amount in 2 years T.T Before that i can only bear with it and get more experience =(

Thanks for the compliment.

All photos from this set was shot using Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Aperture typically ranges from f/1.4 to f/2.8. With this prime lens, I used ISO ranging from 200 to 640. Canon 580 EX II flash is mounted on the camera accompanied by lambency diffuser. No studio strobe, no worries laugh.gif

Oh i see... In your opinion is lambency diffuser versatile and good to be used instead of a bounce card?

Lambency is versatile but heavy. Don't be surprised when everyone stares at you while you are shooting with that mangkuk maggi mee.

I am so far satisfied with the output.

Don't worry the ISO noise bro.
as long as ur pic is good, the little bit more noise is worth imo. smile.gif
try pump to ISO800 , background may look brighter.

Lambency diffuser is very good for portrait.
But you might don't like the size... big sad.gif

I just went one wedding dinner too, the lighting is even worse than pc fair's lighting. But i saw the photographer also using 'maggie cup' haha. I guess it should be very useful...

It was sharper in RAW. Due to JPEG compression, it got a little blurry

#4 and #7? He has the nicest focus point though, which is on the model's eyes. This is the basic of portrait photography....

Sorry to say that the white balance is intended to be like that. biggrin.gif I like warm tint.

Ain't the skin tone near to normal pinkish instead of blue-ish? laugh.gif

The important features are sufficiently in focus. The background is distracting.

cool eh mengsuan! so it's all done with 50mm prime?

love the isolation of the model from the crowd space, and the way the models fill up the whole space.

Haha, I've to agree that I am a little more biased this time but I have reasons:
1. Sensonic booth has got good lighting (no weird colours). My custom WB don't have to be too extreme.
2. The booth is large enough to move around for composition and background isolation.
3. I know Ginny from the previous PC fair and I do like the way she turn out in photos.

Thanks! Yes, it's done with 50mm. smile.gif

I have some photos using 17-55mm but the feel isn't that great and hence wasn't posted this time.

Samsung Galaxy S teaser. Took this picture for review in my blog.

Would like to learn to shoot better product photos. I attempted to get more prominent light curve but it all ended up having overexposure and the light isn't focussed on product, unlike what's usually shown on official website.
