I just received a notification at lunch today of an Android 1.6 update on my unrooted TMobile phone which is 14MB in size. OTA via Maxis. Have not run/installed it yet tho'.

Software update info:
- seach map by voice, get transit and walking directions...
- seach your phone .. with Quick Search box for Android
- new Android Market
- connect to VPN

Is that Donut?

Yeah. That is donut. I just got word from Digi on Twitter they dont officially support Android. I guess i'll have to get a maxis sim to get the donut ota. :-/

I don't know the reliability of telco updates though because for the past two updates i had (Cupcake and prior Cupcake) i got it from my xpax line .. and nothing on maxis. Which caught me by surprised yesterday afternoon also because it also racked up my phone bill to RM100++. I don't know how OTAs are charged by maxis but i don't remember having my xpax credit running out when i updated Cupcake (which was 40MB) !  vmad.gif

i think something wrong with the maxis calculations. i notice maxis has a tendency to over charge that's why i switched to digi. but come on la...they dont officially support android? doh.gif as far as otas go, they're just supposed to charge you for the bytes you dld. i guess it depends on what your data plan is. i plan to use my friend's celcom sim and get donut for my droid. this is a let down from digi. cry.gif

otas are released via telco networks like digi or maxis or celcom.

Mechanics

The OTA mechanism requires the existing software and hardware of the target device to support the feature, namely the receipt and installation of new software received via the wireless network from the provider.

correct me if Im wrong, but the donut update is rather a notification to install

last time for me, I get the notification said that there is a new update, do u want to install now or later? so assuming its have been download the files background all this time, and not suddenly download and install because the files is quite big (if you have root, u can see how big is the update, or rom size)

so i think u need to use either maxis or celcom for a couple of days or a week to download the update in backgroud.

but I could be wrong blush.gif

hmm..you have a point there. drat. i guess this means my wife and i will have to use a maxis or celcom sim in our phones for a few days..but a week is just too long. i need my g1. sad.gif

Aiyah....have had a maxis sim in my G1 for 12hours. Judgung from d arrows, i dont seem to be getting a download in the background when the phone is idle. I cn see the arrows move when an email comes in. Other than that, no.
