Anyone have any success experience to share in hand feeding few days old baby hamsters?

This morning I found out that a stray rat came inside my house, attacked all my hamsters (Robo & WW) in aquariums. 20 hamsters dead bitten by the rat. Now left the babies without their mothers. Left only 3 male adult hamsters survived from that attack. Poor thing...now I use syringe to hand feed them. Not sure they could survive or not. cry.gif

Your DIY cage is nice. I tried before using this kind of cage, but not durable, the hamster may eventually bite a hole on the plastic and escape out.

Acquarium is better choice, but the only problem is the cover , I used the plastic fish cover, but easily just flip over, must use a brick to put on top now. The rat is huge I think as big as a kitten, because it came in from our roof top, my dogs are let loose in the area last night. This morning found my pet carrier which was puttting on top of the rack near the roof already dropped down too. Never expect a rat that is so daring to come in even I have 4 dogs let loose in the area.

Luckily the babies do drink milk from syringe, and I put a bulb inside to keep them warm. Hopefully they could survive through this ordeal.

this is quite creative. but wasteful if u specially go buy a mini cage and edit it.
somemore its more expensive than u buy a new cage lor. unless u got extra small cage smile.gif

Nice DIY cage there, but be careful your hasmters will go and bite all the metal items as the rust will be poisonous to them. wink.gif

andy, why don't you try to get your hamster to come to you instead of trying to catch it all over his tank?

Hold your hand down on the shavings and put some treats at the tip of your fingers closer to him. let him get used to your hand and know it's not dangerous. Then when it's used to taking from the tip, move the treats a little higher up your hand until he has to stand on  your hand to get the treat. And then just continue moving the food up your hand until Muffin is eventually standing, whole body, on your hand. Even better if he starts eating on it.

He'll get the idea that hand = lotsa good things and will rush to it with enough time of training.

I'll try that. biggrin.gif
Anyway , how many of your guys play with your hamster till late night ? icon_question.gif

Thanks for helping in providing that article. Just to share my previous experience, I gave ophaned pups a surrogate mother last time, and the surrogate mother refuse to nurse them and eaten them. So...this time I rather try hand feeding the babies.
