Hi all. I am going to KL and I must say that I am an alien there. So, I am going from North Malaysia to KL, and I plan to purchase a GPS, be it a Nokia 6210 or a standalone GPD device. The catch is:

1. I do not know which is better for KL roads. I need to go to Subang Jaya. DO i need the map for that place? or there is map that covers the whole KL area
2. Which Device is better, and recommended?
3. Say I load the map of Penang, then when I reach, say Rawang, the map will auto change to Rawang map?

Thanks for the help

Hi ..

You sound so entry level in GPS arena .. so I would recommend you to buy the most easiest and convenient to use which is Nuvi 200 series (RM700-800). It is also the cheapest. If you got money, of course you can get the more expensive one.

Regarding the map, I'm using Garmin GPS, so I know that map around Malaysia especially Penang & KL is pretty much complete. Thanks to a community in Malsingmaps.com. You can upload the map all together inside your GPS unit and you don't have to think to change it anymore.

Also, there is a software that Garmin provided with GPS device that allows you to view the map on your PC. So you can find places and check the routes on your PC and transfer to your GPS unit.

You can find the installation guide in my website: my site - click on the GPS navigation portion.

Hope this will help.  All the best!

You are wrong. I am not entry level, I am totally alien in GPS arena biggrin.gif

You can use Malsing or Malfreemap. As for KL for the time being, Malfreemap is better and has more update.

Standalone GPS receiver is better in locking position compare to Smartphone/PDA that comes with built-in GPS receiver.

Here is the option you can choose, Standalone GPS, Smartphone/PDA with built-in GPS, Smartphone/PDA with bluetooth receiver.

Standalone GPS or paring smartphone with bluetooth receiver is not a bad choice, because they can lock signals very fast.
1. Map do covers the whole KL and Selangor.
2. I answered the question already, refer to above.
3. Yes, if you load it in penang, while you are driving all the way from Penang to Rawang, it will load the map itself. Even on highway all the way to Rawang, it will show your current position, driving speed etc. If you drive wrongly, they will recalculate the route and reguide you to ensure you reach your destination. Pretty useful smile.gif

Yes, indeed. That way, we need not have to reload new maps when we reach new loaction

its depend on ur budget actually, if u really need to use gps, i prefer gps device rather than gps phone, because using gps on ur phone really sucking ur phone battery.. smile.gif

Again, how frequent are you using GPS? As for me, I only use it when I get lost or want to go to a place that I dont know how to go. Probably a few times in a month. So basically a PHONE with built-in GPS is suitable for me as I dont use it often. Unless you are using it everyday, then a dedicated GPS receiver will be better.

Like the others said whats your needs? If u use gps everywhere u go then get a nuvi if u only use when you are lost then a phone gps is sufficient. Nuvi is actually kinda waste of money because it only serve 1 purpose that is gps n some minor additional features.

pls note nuvi lock to satelite in few sec
mobile phone gps sometimes can take up to 5mins

Yea, mobile phone takes up to minutes, Bluetooth GPS receiver is around RM150-200 and they lock up within seconds as well smile.gif

yea thats if ure too free to carry two devices and charge two devices and drain both device at once.

Bring out the Bluetooth GPS device only if we need to use it. Besides its really small. Can keep it in the Car smile.gif
*
Actually I do not travel alot. So chances are I am not going to use it very frequently. That is why the Nokia 6210 is in my initial planning. Another reason I consider Nokia 6210 is because I heard from friends that the GPS in Nokia 6210 is better than conventional GPS devices. Is it true?

Thanks for all your replies.

Garmin is good & there are lotsa pros & cons between using standalone & the all-in one Nokia/PDA GPSr

It's all depending on you..Stand-alone- big screen quick acquisition of signals BUT no track recording function except certain model (U need to check wth the seller which model having tracking capability

Nokia/PDA all in one - as said..all0in one easier to carry ...whatever u want from the gadgets..u name it all there... biggrin.gif ..BUT this all-in one having small screen (No good for older ppl), slow in acquiring satelite & etc

It's up to u..pls read more & do research at the link in my siggy (Malsingmaps)

Lol, ok sifu^^. Thanks for all your help. Been going for survey today, and unfortunately, Penang still post a high price for these gadgets. So, I am thinking of going for bluetooth device, priced around RM299. I am not worried about the battery life, that;s not a problem, since the car can recharge the battery.

There isnt any Malaysia map for PSP unless using homebrew google map with cache, but that will be troublesome.

It seem there are, just that it is outdated. The PSP GPS uses Mapthis!, and converting Malsingmap seems to be possible, but tiresome

Hi. I wanna say thanks for those who helped me in the pass. I think i owe you guys some reviews on GPS usage heheh

I bought a bluetooth gps device that pair up with my dopod. After getting it to work with Garmin Mobile XT, I find that searching for street name aren;t getting any result.. For that, I have to search for landmark, or sometime looked at the map on the internet to get to the location and then mark it on My Location. Anyway, it is quite accurate, up to the store and shop name.

I hereby wish to thank everyone that has been patient with my stupid questions bombardment^^
