A dedicated device is always better. By using dedicated GPS device, you can save on h/p battery. The GPS device can connect to car charger. Bigger screen. Dedicated chipset, faster locking (without A-GPS). More powerful processor, faster map scrolling and feedback.

You can imagine it is similiar using h/p with camera as compared to dedicated digital camera like Canon 1000D.

dedicated device is NOT always better.
GPS are weather dependant equipments. AGPS are less dependant under harsh weather conditions.
gps device can conect to car charger, your handfon no car charger ah ? lol

better or not is up to individual user's needs and wants.

Wanna ask u guys something.  I'm using MFM MY maps.  I'll be travelling to another country later (let's say AB), and I want to use GPS there.  Would this work:

1)  put AB's map as another name in Garmin folder, eg. GMAPSUPP_ab.IMG
2)  fly to AB
3)  rename GMAPSUPP.IMG (MY map) to GMAPSUPP_my.IMG
4)  rename GMAPSUPP_ab.IMG to GMAPSUPP.IMG

Also, how do I verify that the AB map is working properly before going there?  If I replace MY map with AB map here, would the map show in Garmin?  I tried "browse map" but it's blank.

Thanks.

put both maps in.
rename as gmapsupp.img, gmapsup2 or gmapprom
i forgot the 4th. i know one can have 4 mapsets in single device.

can test using mapsos.
or can test by ticking away 1 maptile and leaving the other inside while searching for a poi thats not in map 1.

Have you guys install both MSM & MFM in GMobile XT?

I found something weird that both maps will cause conflict. My experience is I go to mapsets to disable MSM (untick the box), this will cause MFM to lose some roads, and fail to calculate my destination. Strangely, if I go E:\Garmin to rename MSM, then MFM will function very well.

Initially I thought that both maps can complement each other i.e when MSM lacks some roads, then MFM will show up but I was wrong.

Loves MFM custom POI on the map but the refresh rate is slower. But i heard MSM is more detail in Klang Valley. Which one to choose?

Is there any easier way to have both map without having to manually rename the map?
*
use 1 enough. mFm got more complete roads in peninsular while mSm better coverage in borneo. mSm split their maptiles so u can just download and install the borneo alone to compliment yourself.
which one to choose up to u la. u yourself say mFm refresh rate slower so u go mSm lor.
cant understand why the need for both maps when both are still the same country.

if u're gonna continue using race chrono to record your movements u've gotto have a re-rad. otherwise your tracks are all gonna be messed up.

when u expand your tracks, u'll get colored segments. i dont need to tell u that the red line portions are crap details yah. yellow means fairly good and green obviously is fine.

when i was in sabah without re-rad, i got a lot of red portions in my recorded tracks. ALOT. and my tracks came back mostly like ........ crap.

pls buy a good re-rad antennae.

of course its normal, a-gps will make your phone make connection(gprs, edge, etc)
just make off, to make the navigation free

Its call A-gps because it Assist GPS to get a faster lock. Usually about 10kb = 10cents.

It assist the GPS by providing all the current satelitte location so the GPS know where to lock. So even u have A-gps but bad signal u still cant get a fast lock
*
i dont think this is the case for symbian.
The Xtra download feature in winmo particularly in samsung and asus pda's is a support feature for most qualcomm gps chips especially G1's.
hence data assembled is from a qualcomm server that supplies data on sattelite orbit patterns and a prediction of sattelite orbit.
