If you have a flashcart, you can try this homebrew program here. It allows you to test every aspect of your DS:

Check the dead pixels before getting the DS from the shop. There's no return policy for dead pixels. Check the Touchscreen, calibrate it a few times. That's about it. Haven't heard anyone complaining about faulty DSes so far.

when u play games and the screens turn black, u will notice if there are dead pixels no matter how small they are as the color of dead pixels will be different than the supposedly black screens.

Ooooo.. ok, ok, thanks, better check mine then! Are there many dead pixel cases out there? Usually it is manufacurer's fault or due to garang usage?

Lesser built quality LCD screens cause that. Like I said, I haven't heard anyone tell me that their NDSL has a dead pixel.

calibration is at the main menu (accessible without putting any game cartridge - mm... sounds familiar? ;p). though the default setting should be good enuf.

Colinwong's recommended download is a pretty good diagnostic tool too (thanks colin!)

other than that, just check the physical aspects la, like buttons, hinges, scrathes, etc. Should be ok la, free some more what!
