Just some info to take notice: iPhone Safe Mode Taken from the net. Today I was installing a few things through Cydia and all of a sudden my iPhone restarted. That in itself is not too weird but when my iPhone rebooted it booted into “Safe Mode.” I had never seen this before. I got a pop-up warning that said, Mobile Substrate Safe Mode. We apologize for the inconvenience, but SpringBoard has just crashed. A recent software installation, upgrade, or removal might have been the cause of this. Your device is now running in Safe Mode. All extensions that support this safety system are disabled. Reboot (or restart SpringBoard) to return to normal mode.”

@davidgary Hahahaha ... I encountered that last night when investigating why I cant delete webclips. Seems like Mobile Substrate (a framework) that enable us to use 5 icons dock is the culprit. I hope saurik will address this issue quickly.
Added on September 19, 2008, 10:21 amBTW ... I'm loving every bit of my pwned fw2.1 and I can see a difference (system wise) pwning the phone using a Mac compared to a PC.

@davidgary Mmm ... in a sense its not like the windows safe mode. Its more to disabling the mobile substrate and the components that depends on it. Other functions work like normal.
Cydia no more appends random characters when moving some files to /var/stash folder. And most of the file owner and group properties are correct. Well this is expected as iPhone is based on Mac OS and pwnage is on Mac OS also. WinPwn might have some difficulties as the the HFS is not a well documented file system.

@frozzbyte
Is good that Apple had the safe mode implemented but is surprising to see that message..lol. Still a good move by apple.
I do notice that Cydia works very much better on fw 2.1 than fw 2.0.1 now judging by what you have mentioned on the owner and group properties.

I have an unlocked iphone 2G with JB FW2.0. QuickPwn looks like can do a quick job but will it keep my phone unlock? Or its better I use Pawnage Tool instead? Thanks.

Thanks. If you already have it unlocked and u managed to restore it to the fw 2.0 and its still unlocked, then it shouldn't be a prob to restore or upgrade to fw 2.1 and it will still be unlocked. quickpwn for the fw 2.1 isnt out yet read the 1st post on this thread, so better use pwnage tool wit a mac. hope this helps.

Its from Saurik's Mobile Substrate framework. That framework use to hook some functions to the springboard without any harm to the system files hence the safe mode mechanism.

Guess pawnagetools will be a safer bet then? the safest bet to have an unlocked + JB 2G iphone is to restore from a custom ipsw. check this thread from hwz: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=2091706the threadstarter has a couple of links to custom ipsw. just download the one that suits u, and use itunes (click "shift" on keyboard + restore button) and choose the custom ipsw u downloaded. my 2G iphone is running fine on the custom ipsw which i used itunes to restore from version 1.1.4. no need to use quikpwn / winpwn at all.

I still got alot to learn. Thank you for the correction bro. Found out that is Winterboard pasal. "Some of you may experience some issues after updating Cydia and installing or de-installing applications. The error you may see is Mobile Substrate Safe Mode. According to Saurik it has to do with Winterboard and the update of Mobile Substrate in Cydia. This was needed to get many applications compatible with firmware 2.1".
