if your unit has been JB, then most probably a third party software is causing it.

because there was once i tried updating this intuitive shuffle once and i couldn't start up my ipod. each time that i try opening the ipod, it will back crash back to the springboard.

i had to openSHH and delete that particular app manually and voila!
