This is a more elaborate poll, elaborating the '32bit vs 64bit, Window Vista - Which will you choose' by Neo18. Due to poll limitations i'm not specifying Retail or OEM editions.

Which are you guys using? and Why?

I am using 64bit Home Premium on my main rig.. for 4GB and beyond of course! thumbup.gif

32bit is the common 'normal' version of Vista which can only detect up to 3.5GB or ram
64 bit on the other hand, supports ram capacity of 4GB and above.. happy.gif

advantage? well, mostly coz its a heckload safer than XP, among other things.

i have both Vista Home Premium x64 and Vista Ultimate x64.
currently i'm using Vista Ultimate x64 for my system because i love the MUI language packs function.

but we can also force-install the language packs for Home Premium brows.gif

i think won’t use other Ultimate extras like Bitlocker flex.gif

1.faster processing. Correct me if i wrong. (u can refer to those benchmark score from internet. 64bit also get higher score than 32bit)

2.use more spaces and duplicate files. the OS itself will separate into 2 program files directory. One is for x64 and one is x86. Everytime u install software that is 32bit, then it will go into C:\Program Files(x86)\.....

3. driver problem.... crash often compare with 32bits

4. 64bit OS support all 32bit applications. But something there will be some 32bit program not work because programmer don't implement it to support 64bit

no problems running it, but there is one thing weird regarding my system which i do not really know whether it is caused by my drivers or not:

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=810803&hl=

that is the only problem, the rest run quite smoothly, Vista really shines on 4GB, and to utilize 4GB, x64 is the way to go smile.gif

4GB is an overkill for me. Currently using 3GB. Can't reply to your thread, have no idea. PS: I don't play games neither do I do encoding. icon_rolleyes.gif

y is it an overkill. is it nt good to hv 4 over 3gb?

sry ,nother question. if ulti= home+business, what is its advantage over just business? if nt significant, i might b better of wit js biz ed. tht's js a weird equation for user coming from xp ship since home is subset to xp pro (heck pro was way more 'efficient' than home for essential networking/connectivity then). well, js trying to understand the basic b4 goin for purchase , original ofc since only these things r allowed rclxms.gif

hv a nice day.

MCE = Media Center Edition...

essentially a XP Pro with some media capabilities...

4GB is limited to 3+GB if u re using 32-bits OS... u'll need 64-bits OS to fully utilize the 4GB... else it's always the more the merrier...

simply...

Home Basic = no Aero, no Media Center, no backup function
Home Premium = got Aero, got Media Center, no backup function
Business = got Aero, no Media Center, got backup function
Ultimate = got Aero, got Media Center, got backup function, and better networking capabilities

Currently running on Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Btw do you duys update SP1? Is it necessary? Because my sound driver (SigmaTel HD Audio) isn't compatible with the update so until now haven't update it.

Yes, we'd recommend to update to SP1 as most of us have done it unless your very sure it'll cause problems for you. May we know your audio card model? Maybe I can help your locate a driver that is SP1 capable and is compatible with your audio card?

I'm using Dell Inspiron 1420 here.
Last time I checked Microsoft's website as the Windows Update doesn't shows up the option to install SP1.
There's a list of non-compatible hardwares, and the SigmaTel sound is one of 'em.

Attached Image

The suggested solution would be wait for the manufacturer to came out with a new driver, but I can't find a suitable one from Dell or SigmaTel's website.

For this I'm still stick with SP0 Vista.... If anyone could help me sort this out I'll be glad. smile.gif

i think it's a better idea that u hunt for the drivers urself rather than to wait for Dell...

in fact SP1 is nothing that big... it's juz a package with all the cumulative updates since day 1 of Vista...

how you rate vista ultimate 64bits?

Currently im using Home premium 32bits. M thinking upgrade to ultimate 64 since i have 2x2gb ram, and i feel it will be a waste for not fully utilizes the ram.

I check my desktop which installed with vista 64, it shows ACPI x64bit-based pc under Device Manager. Your system capable to install 64-bit OS, because T5550 is EM64T enabled. Click the below link for more info about ACPI

The device manager show ACPI x86-based pc because now u are under 32-bit version of windows..
Your processor are support 64-bit. That's why performance and tools tell u that your system capable of 64-bit.. rclxms.gif

xp 32- can do everything but slow..
xp 64 - fast but some software dont support x64
vista - uses too much ram..

lol.. think too much.. then shld i go for ultimate x32? slower than x64? =( arghh, CONFUSED =(

If you're into graphic or 3d which demand lots of RAM, and your mobo can support more than 4gb, then go for vista x64. today all major company have x64 version of their apps. if not just stick with x86. try turning off aero glass and unnecessary apps/services for faster response vista...
