Though Fox has no plans for a major overhaul, the studio has scheduled a strategy meeting to assess the status of its superheroes, a group sorely missed this summer. On the agenda, Fox will mull the possibility of more "X-Men" spinoffs, including a young-X-Men project as well as "Deadpool," based on a character played by Ryan Reynolds in "Wolverine."

Deadpool Spin-Off Moving Forward

20th Century Fox is developing a X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off featuring Deadpool, the wise-cracking mercenary played in the film by Ryan Reynolds, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Reynolds is attached to reprise the character for what for now is simply being called Deadpool. Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel Studios would act as producers.

The project is currently out to writers.

The trade adds that the studio considered a Deadpool spin-off early in "Wolverine's" development process, which is why it cast Reynolds.

Wait a minute. In Origins: Wolverine, deadpool was mutated to Weapon 11 ...and was killed. So basically his story ends there. There is no future for him where movies are concerned. So we get to see his origins, knowing that he will be killed of like a small time character in Origins: Wolverine ? Doesn't feel right.

Normally its the cinematic version that counts doesn't it? After all that's what the general public watched.

20th Century Fox is making progress with its "X-Men" spinoff, "Deadpool," and has tapped "Zombieland" scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to pen the screenplay.
Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role as the wisecracking mercenary he portrayed in last year's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

There is no timetable on the Marvel property, though Reynolds has a window after wrapping the "Green Lantern" this summer.

Reynolds has been bulking up to play the DC Comics' hero "Green Lantern," which starts lensing next month. This means he would already be in superhero shape if the script for "Deadpool" is ready by summer.

Reese and Wernick, who wrote "Zombieland," will stay true to the mythology of "Deadpool" given that Reynolds is a huge fan and protector of the property.

The tone of "Deadpool," which features an antihero as opposed to the more traditional heroic comicbook protagonist, is very similar in tone to "Zombieland."

Reese and Wernick, high school friends who began collaborating in 2001, most recently sold the pitch "Earth vs. Moon" to Universal Pictures. The pair penned a draft of "Venom" for Sony/Marvel.

Fake or Not, These Deadpool Movie Posters Still Make Me Happy



They’re fake, of course, but don’t let that stop you from getting all giddy about a possible “Deadpool” movie anyway. Sure, it’s probably a false hope at this point, given that Ryan Reynolds has been attached to the film forever and he’s now way too busy with “Green Lantern” and a sequel
or two if that film should prove to be a hit, which it undoubtedly will be. (I honestly can’t see a “Green Lantern” movie not doing “Iron man” business, to tell you the truth).

So where does that leave a “Deadpool” movie starring Ryan Reynolds? As fake movie posters around Manhattan, apparently.

WUdn't care if its fake. but, I can't think of anyone else who has been capable of being supremely sarcastic (aside from RDJ, which is unfit for the role) and capable of breaking the fourth wall than Ryan can. Thank God he boarded into a jeep and went for the audition for Two guys, a Girl and A pizza place.

Ryan is the most suitable actor to take that role, but as Green Lantern..he's not..

Actually, it would be interesting to see Ryan take on Hal Jordan. His serious side is quite nice (Just Friends is one of it). Its just like Adrien Brody in Predators. Which I still have yet to see.

Robert Rodriguez in Talks to Direct Deadpool After All



The initial report  of Robert Rodriguez being somehow involved in a “Deadpool” movie surfaced last month, but the director and the studio denied them. Then last week over at Comic Con, Rodriguez confirmed that he had indeed been given the script by Fox, and was reading it, though he refused to say if he was considering the director’s chair. Now according to the LATimes, Rodriguez is, indeed, in negotiations to direct a “Deadpool” movie starring Ryan Reynolds.

The article says no deals are in place, but that the two sides are definitely “negotiating” for Rodriguez to direct the comic book movie, a sequel (of sorts) to Fox’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, though the character was said to have outgrown that movie, and will in fact move in a completely different direction as if “Wolverine” never happened. Which is not a bad idea, given what they did to poor Deadpool in that one. Imagine, sewing Deadpool’s mouth shut. What’s next, making Superman knock up Lois Lane with a super baby? Ridiculous.

Rodriguez still has yet another entry in the lucrative “Spy Kids” franchise (the fourth one) on his plate, a film he announced over at Comic Con. After that, though, he appears to be free, which means a “Deadpool” movie is definitely a possibility for the Austin-based director. Will he be a good fit for it? Who knows, but he certainly has the kinetic action stuff down.

Robert Rodriguez on 'Deadpool': 'It's a great script'

John Horn caught up with Robert Rodriguez on Monday to talk about the success of "The Expendables" and the epic fail of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" at the box office for an earlier article, and the conversation turned toward the filmmaker's own plans.



Robert Rodriguez sounds like he's drawing a bead on "Deadpool." But will he pull the trigger?

“It’s a great script and a great property,” an enthusiastic Rodriguez said of the Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick ("Zombieland") screenplay that would bring the "merc with the mouth" from Marvel Comics to the screen in his own film adventure.



Rodriguez says he has been in meetings with Twentieth Century Fox about directing the film, which, presumably, would star Ryan Reynolds, who portrayed the glib gunman "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Reynolds is becoming a major player in comic-book cinema considering his roles in next year's "Green Lantern" film, the planned "R.I.P.D." adaptation as well as his work in the "Blade" franchise.

Rodriguez, who just finished the final sound mix of "Machete," sounded gung ho about "Deadpool" but added that he is still debating his next project. “I’m just working everything out,” Rodriguez said, noting that he is choosing between three options for his next directing job. He said one is the long-discussed "Sin City 2" but he declined to name the other, though it could be "Nerveracker," a far-future thriller that was announced last year but hasn't moved as quickly as anticipated.

Robert Rodriguez May Be Out As Deadpool Director

It looks like Robert Rodriguez  and his bandana may not direct “Deadpool” due to scheduling conflicts. Between hyping “Machete” and directing another installment of the “Spy Kids” franchise (something I’m far too excited about), the timing doesn’t look like it is going to work out.

Rodriguez told Deadline that:-

"he has read the “Deadpool” script and likes it, but his own obligations promoting “Machete” and then directing “Spy Kids 4” has made his participation tenuous. “They are trying to make a certain small window that’s going to be tough because of ‘Spy Kids’ . . . If they push it back, it would be a lot better for me.”

is also busy, and has signed on to appear in “Safe House” with Denzel Washington. That film is scheduled to begin shooting early next year, which just so happens to be when Fox wanted to start filming “Deadpool”. If the title character is unavailable, I imagine the studio will most likely have to delay the start of production.

Anyone who has been exposed to Deadpool, the merc with a mouth in the comic book pages already knows that there’s more here than just another superhero movie. If there’s one thing Deadpool isn’t, it is just another superhero movie. In fact, I’m not even sure if you can call him a superhero. He’s kinda, well, morally challenged.

, who is still committed to playing the character (Fox has optimistically set a 2012 release date for the “Deadpool” movie), recently talked to the LATimes about the script, about the character, and what he calls Deadpool’s “shame spiral”. Sounds fun.



Reynolds goes on to describe the “Deadpool” script by “Zombieland” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the same script that Robert Rodriguez has already positively responded to, though it’s looking unlikely he’ll helm the movie given his busy schedule. But hey, there’s still a chance…



Reynolds also confirms what we already know, that the “Deadpool” movie will veer away from the character that showed up in the “Wolverine” movie, and the insane Deadpool will, when the need arises, break the fourth wall and talk directly to the audience.

So if you’re not familiar with the character, forget what you saw in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”. That wasn’t Deadpool. That was some sanitized version of Deadpool that Reynolds just had to play and prove that he could. Now that he’s proven he can, it’s time for the real Deadpool.

Please abandon all other movies that you have in line for next year. You have done Green Lantern and we're happy. Now you should move to this. We want the real Deadpool even when the one that we used to have in Origins is very tame of you. Way too tame.

In which case, I got money that it’ll be “Deadpool”. Call it a hunch, or the fact that Reynolds has been talking up the role since forever, while “R.I.P.D.” has only recently come up. Then again, “R.I.PD.” already has itself a director, while “Deadpool” is flirting with Robert Rodriguez, so you can actually say that “R.I.P.D.” is further head in development…

In any case, here’s what Reynolds said about the two movies to IO9 while doing press for his new thriller “Buried”:



That last part is the soup bone quote: “But I think it would be more likely that only one of them gets made with me.”

Reynolds reiterates, though, that he won’t even be making that choice until he’s done with the comedy “The Change-up” and the action thriller “Safe House” with Denzel Washington as his follow-ups to “Green Lantern”.

It’s then that he starts working on either “R.I.P.D.” or “Deadpool”.

That is, unless “Green Lantern 2″ gets in the way first…

As good a script as Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have written, it’ll still be up to Ryan Reynolds to keep this thing good. If Reynolds, for whatever reason, decides to walk away from the movie (you know, reasons like the gazillion other movies and franchises he’s probably being offered right now), then I can’t see a “Deadpool” movie getting made, much less staying faithful to this script and the character we’ve come to know and love from the comics.

My favorite part about the script? Its approach to Deadpool’s ridiculously bullshit appearance in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, which goes something like this:

The latest news on the movie based on the merc with a mouth has Robert Rodriguez, the fanboy choice for director, once again leaving the project and a new candidate emerging to take his place. His name? Adam Berg.

I still remember watching The Grey. Movie was censored so much it was 20 minutes shorter........ I can't imagine what they'll do bout this movie...
