Architechtural difference.
AMD concentrating on mainstream rather than high end.If high end AMD will make monolithic chip like nVidia.To make it able to on-par or compete AMD just make 2 Chip in One PCB rather than huge monolithic chip.
Yet the driver make Multi GPU sucks..

For me,ATi graphics are more sharper than nVidia..I already compared it with my bro nvidia cards..
