After doing research and comparing all branded notebook, I think compaq presario CQ40 is very suitable to me, in price and also specification.
I have some question to ask: 1. How can the price in pc fair much lower than in the hp website? How can they do that? Is the notebook a totally new notebook? 2. Can I customize my specification, as what I can do when buying dell notebooks? e.g. I want to change my harddisk size etc.
I saw that some of you having trouble of choosing HD3200 and HD3450 For me, as a desktop AMD780G chipset user, I don't know if the same thing will happen in notebook, but i would like to give me comment: I am using HD3200 built in graphic card and It is extremely enough for me, a normal user. So i will not choose HD3450 in buying notebook. My cpu temperature is always about 40+-3 degeree C. I am satisfy with that. However, I don't know if notebook will have the same temperature.

QUOTE(cannavaro @ Dec 5 2008, 11:38 PM) 1. Try calling HP directly and ask, I'm sure they are well aware of these ridiculously low prices. It could even be an official promo, minus the official announcement. To me this is normal, we're reaching the end of the year and by 2009 newer models with better specs will be coming out. And when that happens it'd be harder to clear old stocks. Regarding whether the notebook is brand new or otherwise, that depends on the seller. In this case I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. 2. Not possible, fullstop. no customization for compaq notebooks? How can it be like that?!! I cannot upgrade my spec at all?

QUOTE(cannavaro @ Dec 6 2008, 10:01 AM) No you can't. Why would you want to buy rams from them anyway? It's way more expensive. When I bought my notebook at a HP store I asked the salesperson whether they're selling rams as well. I was holding quite a few pricelists in my hand when I asked. The guy straightaway said "they sell way cheaper, better buy outside". you mean buy ram from outside is better? i found that 115-AU is very cheap an suitable for me as long as I upgrade the ram however, the ram is 667 MHz or can I change it to 800MHz 2GB? or I just buy a 2GB add 1GB original to make 3GB 667MHz? would it be better than 2GB 800MHz? but 115-au does not have bluetooth. can i demand the saleman in pcfair to add in?

QUOTE(shady @ Dec 6 2008, 08:33 PM) Max is 4GB. 2 sticks of 2GB DDR2 800. Under 32bit OS only 3GB can be utilized. That is official specs for AMD 780G chipset inside the notebook. Did you install IDT sound driver? this means that i can add 2GB for CQ40-115AU to become 3GB? it will support? what the person told me is not correct?

QUOTE(shady @ Dec 6 2008, 08:43 PM) Yes. The notebook comes with 1GB DDR2 667. If you add a 2GB DDR2 800 stick, it will run at DDR2 677 with total of 3GB RAM. thank you very much because the website state that max 2GB, i am so worry if it cannot run 3GB, wasting my money i think i will take this model any thing need to care about? how to differentiate between a new and a refurbish notebook? how about the battery? anything to care about that when buying a notebook This post has been edited by luotang: Dec 6 2008, 09:04 PM

QUOTE(shady @ Dec 6 2008, 10:00 PM) If you put in 4GB and use 32bit Windows you can only use 3GB out of the 4GB. Max is 4GB. Already stated in lots of post before. To check whether new or refurbished, you can check the serial no at HP website or call HP. I dont think AMD can run dual channel with different sticks of RAM. i am planning only for 1GB+2GB that is 3GB that mean i will get a total of 3GB? one more thing the harddisk for CQ40-115AU is 160GB 5400rpm? can i change it to 7200rpm? QUOTE(shady @ Dec 7 2008, 09:12 PM) IMHO, most laptop cooler especially cheap ones wont work well with this model. The bottom is not ventilated so no use blowing air there. Maybe you can try elevate the rear part so that hot air can blow out easier. You cant change that. The system will automatically adjust the amount according to need and the available system RAM. har? is like that one ar...... i thought it can be changed
