Hello guys, I just brought a new CQ40-401AX on PC Fair in Ipoh for RM 1899. They provided me with 1GB DDR2-800 RAM only, so I brought 2 sticks of 2GB Corsair SO-DIMMS DDR2-800s and the whole setup costs around RM2.2k. Hope the price is reasonable.

I would like to ask the users here how did they cool their lappies, because when I'm gaming, the core soars to 90C++. And this significantly lowers my shelf-life. My friend, according to him, managed to cool his lappie to 70+ using a 120cm fan or less laptop cooler.

Another this I want to ask is, I installed Vista Ulti that the boot up was pretty quick until now. The BIOS load up was slow, and it stuck on the 'Compaq' screen for more than 10secs. But Vista loaded fairly fast. Any solutions? Maybe a BIOS update? Thanks. I love this lappie

The DRAM:FSB is fixed, but I saw the mem core speed running faster at intervals. I thought AMD's on-die memory controller on the processor allows the memory to be run as the same speed of the processor? Damn, I always thought HyperTransport is a great idea.

Is it. Hmm, I should do more reading . Anyway the HyperTransport just applies for removing the FSB right?

Incase if anyone is wondering how this laptop performs in gaming here are some of my benchmarks. All using ingame FPS measurement

My specs:

CQ-40 401AX


Warcraft III (Smooth and fast)

Very smooth, no problems at all.

Call of Duty 4 (Stutters at resolutions above 1024x768)

With AA disabled, resolution at 1024x768, low dynamic lights, no specular map, no depth of field and no glow.
15-30fps outdoors at large map and 50fps+ indoors.

Call of Duty 5 (Stutters even at 800x600)

The single player side of COD5 torments the 401AX, even at 800x600, it only can reach around 20fps max. Its probably due to the massive lighting effects on screen. If you disable all the dynamic lights and lower the texture it will be playable around 30fps. But it will look hell ugly.

All games running at default catalyst 8.5 driver provided at HP website. If you guys have any newer drivers or modded one with MobilityModder please send me the link, because mine ain't working. Will post more games soon!

Sorry what I mean by 2303mb is total graphics memory. Max shared memory is 1702mb.

Can I ask what version of Catalyst did you mod. I modded 9.3 before but it shows an error that the hardware doesn't match..

My lappie runs on 2x2GB DDR2 800 and the total memory is 2303MB, don't know why.

Socket wise, its compatible and its workable. Theoretically should be able to upgrade but are mobile processors sold in single packages? Haha

Laptop coolers doesn't help much as the ventilation design is very much flawed in the CQ40. If you want 2-3C cooler then you might wanna try a table fan pointing at it from the side and get a very large single fan cooler. I've crashed my graphics card two times in 1 week lately because of intense gaming, 4 hours 100C +. I was afraid it fried during the first time it crashed.
