Hi
Sorry for the late reply. I am using a passive potentiometer for the Pre. It sounded ok at first, but more listening showed that it lacks dynamics and the pot is now noisy, even though it is an Alps Black Beauty type. I would certainly recommend that you use an active preamp. The Quad34 is somewhat dull, but it has the useful Quad tone controls. If you are ever going to upgrade to new Harbeths, make sure it has a Radial or Radial2 cone. My P3 does not. I heard the SHL5 with a tube amp, I think it is great and I think in that particular session, it exposed the weakness of the tube amp's bass. My next upgrade plan, if plans are ever going to happen, is a larger speaker. Small speakers have their charms, but for larger orchestras, they just don't cut it, even if you sit close to them (although that helps). happy listening. QUOTE(ora-ito @ Nov 24 2009, 08:48 AM) |
