ok, so i just test water la ho with iron man..here's what i can say so far:

PQ - i agree, nothing really to shout about, but that's not saying it's bad. not at all! it's on par with any big blockbuster release on BD. I find that the colors somewhat a bit subdued in the scenes i've tested. of course, we're not expecting crank or speed racer PQ as this is supposed to be gritty and real. black levels are just nice, not too dark, not too gray. i've calibrated my tv with DVE, and i'm comparing one movie to another on same settings.

AQ - i think i understand the concern of the lacking in oomph. the action scenes are nice, and yes, the LFE is ever so present. every thump of iron man can be felt. machine gun bullets whiz by, and iron man flies by around you. however, what was extremely lacking to me is the oomph in clarity of the voice. it's like a bit muffled and yes, i had to crank up a bit than normal. i've checked my DRC, both are off (PS3 and amp). so what gives? i'll try recalibrating my levels again and get back to this. see if make any difference.

speed racer looks good even on DVD......but have to say the story line itself is quite crappy.....havent brought myself to watch the whole thing yet.

hmm..i recalibrated the levels on the audio..still the dialogue seems a bit too low to my liking. searching on avs forums, one person said the volume was mastered at a lower volume.

most of the people who complained on muffled voices, seem to have their DRC switched to on in their PS3s, and after they switch it off, they seem to be more satisfied.

i've been switching my DRC off since day 1, but the dialogue seems to be still low.

however, action scenes are superb! explosions, the sonic boom on the subs..very nice!

ah well, a lot of them are saying the audio is by default not good, so even after DRC issues sorted out, the actual audio transfer not really up to par as transformers.

anyway, if anyone of you had read articles on the extra 'cameo' in iron man (no, not the one after the credits) i can confirm now, that extra 'cameo' is indeed there in all it's HD glory. REMEMBER, spoiler alert (maybe) to those who haven't watched the movie:

Fuiyo, The Thing! How's the movie? I'm thinking buying this.

haven't watched this movie for a loooooong time..but as far as i remembered it..it was very suspenseful! as for the PQ, AQ..i could only mention as per review la..blu-ray.com gave v.good rating on both!

so it was an instant buy for me.

toratora, now i couldn't wait for the incredible hulk BD where it was announced that they will include all the cut footage (more than an hour's worth IINM) and got another cameo also. dunno HOW it will work out but:

Speed Racer, I-Robot, & Cars.

concerts normally look lifelike cos the camera they use is different from movie cams. like when you shoot using a personal HD handycam for instance.

movie BD don't really have that 'LIVE' type of picture quality. and not all BD movies have good picture quality. it depends on the video transfer of that movie, the original format/quality of the movie being shot in, etc. however there ARE a lot of very beautiful quality movies which are totally the definition of HD (you can see the pores on the faces, sweat, smudges on glass, anything that you couldn't see on a DVD): like some that fentan mentioned.

you can go to sites like blu-ray.com or hidefdigest.com for BD movie reviews and decide which one you want to buy.

IINM also, sometimes they display movies which have that 'LIVE' look, most probably because they are using 100HZ LCDs which gives a faster motion to the picture, hence giving it a 'live' feel. however, since movies are shot at lower rates, so these displays sometimes make it too 'fast forward' motion and looks unnatural.

so if you wanna show your dad reference quality, make sure the shop show reference quality movies. normally Sony shows Casino Royale, or Kingdom of Heaven which are both reference material for picture quality.

think he was probably referring to the HD videos eg. showing plant life with crstal clear dews on leaves or super bright colored insects etc ??
