when does it happen? during gaming or wat? if not mistaken, vista does not have blank screen so far..with most of the 4850GS user..

just during normal usage of the window...
it will suddenlly gone black fo 2-3 second

than the system info will said the hardware stop responding to the driver, thus the driver need to restart

it happened for XP and VIsta cause i had two OS

blackouts still happens even though i have new psu and also updated to 8.9 on XP. man, i am so lazy to go to lowyat as hari raya is about more than a week to go.

I contacted Gainward Germany for getting some feedback also.
Anyway I'll get ne new one. In France when you buy something you have 7 days to change your mind if you need for any reason... (legal delay) I used this legal delay to get a quick replacement. Just wondering if I'll get a correct one now.

My spec:


• Mobo Asus P5Q! don't want to go for SLI or Crossfire ---> With 1 card it's sufficiently a source of concerns...
• Intel Core 2 duo E8400 not o/c
• Ventirad Noctua NH-U12P: silence and will be ok for cpu o/c
• DDR2 SDRAM GSkill F2-8500CL5D-2GBPK
• DVD Samsung SH-S223F/BEBE Sata
• DVD Philipps DROM5016 IDE
• HD Maxtor Diamond Max22 500 Go-32Mo – Sata 2
• HD Seagate Barracuda 200 Go – 8 Mo - IDE for my extra data
• GC Gainward Radeon HD 4850 512 Mo Golden Sample Edition
• PSU Thermaltake thoughpower 750w (bought last year, I that time I wanted to build "pwoerfull PC" but my wife changed my mind", so a bit oversized today)
• Case Antec 300 + 1 more Fan Noctua 120 NF-P12 1300 --> This case is excellent:: cheap, 12 cm & 14 cm fans in possibility to add 2 more in front & 1 more on the side ... PSU is fiited down (Fan of the psu is on the top of the psu in this case)

Screen is Samsung 206BW so 4850 will be pretty sufficient ( previously I had a 1950 pro... But it become a toaster before dying due to the power VRM .... Even with heatsink on it died! Good card but bad design. Hope new ATI generation are better. I seleted 4850GS not only for performances but mainly for its new PCB, power management and improved cooling. Hopr I will have any regrets.
I'm not pro ATI or Nvidia : I have other pcs with NV 6600 GT, 5700 LE currently running ( ok I need to say) And still have my first PC with YES a geforce 256 if you do remember that card!

OS is Win XP SP3.

No no , I used to actually when I as a child. But this has nothing to do. For europe the tech suport is in germany, this is the only thing I found at 2:00 am this night before going sleeping.
Now I do'nt even know where I leave & need some coffee !!!Arghh!
Looking again at their site , it's Germany . Not a pb, I only need informations and if they confirm the problem eventually a way to see if I have a correct card considerng the new batch date (with S/N number for instance) . My distribution will do the job and change the card on his side . Stef.

So this is:
Is Europe likely to be affected the same?
Is there any way to check if we have cards from new batch ( S/N or date on labels on the back of the card)
Which chip is in cause ?

Hello everyone, I'm from Romania, and also i have similar problems with this Gs card (black screen's for a few seconds). I sent the card to the waranty, and I don't know what card I should get instead of that ( the same model?, but without this problems I hope, or a 9800gtx+, which is not soo fast like a 4850 GS?)
So I ask you guys how to detect a bad card from a good one?

Added on September 20, 2008, 4:36 pmExactly, I experimented this thing too, when I try to cool much better the card, try to aplyy much more ventilation, and his fan over 50% I HAVE MANY BLACK SCREENS, but when I shut down some parts of case ventilation, and put his fan on auto, I have less black scrrens.
THAT'S EXTREMLY WIERD !

ya, Furmark is totally free.....try to do stability test with 8MXAA for 30mins...see how ur GC respon !

No. Still using the same PSU. Didn't try with ST50F yet, no time since I'm playing around with Vista 64 bit lol.

Already tested Furmark MSAA 8x @ 1280 x 960.. Fan speed 100% temp +- 70C..
30min running without any problem, is it enough to say that my GC is ok?..

Definately, if got problem I think within minutes it will fail. Gah, even failed on my Vista

FPS min: 8 AVG:23 max 38.. on stock GS speed
After this, gonna try oc'd clock 750/1150

just now i played crysis and i have blinking black screen. Is this the black screen eveyone is talking about?

yesterday i played half-way and then it turned into black screen, then game error and become blue screen(crash). After that it automatically restart.. sad.gif

the black screen is...

You play games, suddenly screen goes black (no signal to ur monitor), then you got no option unless reset button (or winxp, got vpu recover...)

All we know is NOT all 4850 have problems. Only FEW Gainward 4850 GS & CC cards from 15th August till 10th Sep 2008 batch. Presumably the batch in Europe is affected too. Please check with Gainward Europe. Visit http://www.gainward.de/support/support_uk_rma.html

There is no official release from Gainward because the qty affected is too few. Eg. we sold few hundreds here but so far only noticed less than 5-6 people really affected.


YES, all Gainward are manufactured in the same factory now. But we use different retail box for the mainland China market (colorful Chinese Opera face). Gainward is a top brand in Europe, esp. Germany.

Just see if you have any blackouts when playing games (any type) or running applications. No need to stress test it with any special software.

Blackouts are caused by MANY reasons. We just want to be safe so we offer the exchange program with a new GC.

That means if your blackouts are caused by Gainward 4850 unstable chip, then it should not happen anymore. But there is NO guarantee blackouts won't happen due to other reasons (unstable/unclean OS, driver, signals, hot temp, bad/broken connectors etc).

We like to remind everyone that this exchange problem is ONLY for those with blackouts (whether due to our chip or other reasons - impossible to be 100% sure). Gainward will test the returned stock. So please be sure you do have blackouts before asking for exchange.

Below is an example of blackouts caused by OTHER reasons:

Just keep playing games and using your PC like you normally do. No need to do anything special. See if you have blackouts during gaming or usage.

But take note that blackouts are caused by MANY reasons. Since you experience many black screens very fast, our opinion is that your card is affected. But it's just our view.
