I have the intention to apply for B.Engineering (Chemical Engineering) at the following universities.

Western Australia
1. University of Western Australia
2. Curtin University of Technology

Victoria
1. RMIT University

New South Wales
1. University of Newcastle

I am a person who is more geared towards learning through a lot of hands-on and practical work experience. My choice is to study in Western Australia

Question

1. I would like to know if anyone out here could let me know which of the above universities are more geared towards such teaching in their B.Engineering (chemical engineering) course.

2. Which area (Western Australia, Melbourne, Newcastle) offer more opportunities for part-time work and/or industry placement in the engineering field.

3. I have never been to Australia and therefore would appreciate any additional information with regards, lifestyle, people, etc in the above areas mentioned. I would like to have your actual views instead of just depending on the university brochures.

Any other information is greatly appreciated.

Harlo, I'm currently in Perth, well, just randomly being here once in a while. Indeed, UWA and Curtin are the 2 top Engineering schools in WA. From what i've heard from my seniors, UWA offers more theory studies than practical while Curtin's engineering course is more keen towards the practical side. Both of them have their own pros and cons depending on which one you might be interested in.

Ver - Thank you for this piece of information.  I too heard that UWA is more theoretical compared to Curtin. UWA requires 12 weeks industrial training in order to graduate.  But somehow, I can't find if Curtin provides any industrial training.

QUOTE(Ver @ September 26, 2008, 6:18 pm)

Harlo, i'm from Vickery House actually xD Canning Student that is. The price for next year's in vickery is 130 dollars along with facilities fee and activity fee. Vickery is a one storey ground, here rooms are all quite near with land around. Erica is a three storey place which i've never been before. But VIckery is okay, quite cozy and really near curtin and it's bus stop.
*
Curtin web listed $A122 per week for vickery and Erica is $A116. Guess they have increased the price. I also thought of considering George James House. The rooms seems more spacious and they have data connections.

Ver - May I ask what nationality are you and can I PM you if I need to know a little more about Curtin and the on-campus accomodation.

Heh.. I am from UWA engineering... UWA and curtin are forever in a feud over their engineering programmes tongue.gif
there are arguments for and against both actually. I won't really go into that as only really know one side of the debate, the For UWA-Against Curtin side, need to wait for a For Curtin-Against UWA side to appear before can debate tongue.gif
I have today put in my application at IDP to UWA as well as Curtin and also University of Newcastle. Will be putting in my application to the other universities during the next open days at IDP to save on application fees.

hey there....im planning to apply to either uwa or uni of adelaide for engineering....right now whats puzzlin me is the living cost?one of my fren told me perth is cheaper n another fren said the opposite.  rclxub.gif im confused..so my ques is  how much will it cost monthly to live in a city like adelaide and perth? im looking for a place that wont be too expensive as i dont want to burden my parents..thanks in advance! icon_question.gif

Moumosea - I think we are in the same boat, going through the process of applying to universities in australia for engineering. I have also put in my application to uwa and uni of adelaide for chemical engineering - 2009 intake. Like you, I have not decided whether to go to Adelaide or Perth so I put the application in first and decide later if and when I receive an offer from them.

According to the universities' 2009 brochures, it seems that the total cost of studying in Uni of Adelaide is cheaper compared to UWA.
BTW, international students applying for undergraduate programs at Uni of Adelaide are automaticaly considered for those scholarship offered by the University (of couse based on academic results and merit). No separate application is required but only those received before scholarship closing date of 31st October will be considered. Further, you don't have to pay AUD50 application fee if you apply through IDP. Otherwise I suggest you submit at the IDP Subang Aussie Open days on 14th & 15th October as application fees are waived on those days.

My parent has put an estimated budget of AUD 420 per week to study at UWA and AUD 315 per week to study at Uni of Adelaide as cost of living (including accomodation). Anyone can tell me if these amount are sufficient???.

QUOTE(Lemonfish @ Oct 6 2008, 07:25 PM)
I am studying in Adelaide...ROughly you need about AUD 1200 per month.......BTW, what engineering are you intend of doing? 2009 intake?
*
Lemonfish - Are you also studying engineering (what engineering). Mind sharing your experience studying in Uni Adelaide with us. How's the lecturers, accomodation, availability of part-time jobs, industrial placement, etc, etc.

Have received offers from UWA and University of Newcastle. Now awaitng for Curtin and University Adelaide then I can finally decide where I will end up: Perth, Adelaide or Newcastle. Chances are very high that I will end up in Perth.

@yongyc: not like im dicouraging u to join newie or anything cos its my alma mater n im proud of it but u might find adjusting here abit hard lulz
b3ta - May I know why it may be difficult in adjusting? Is it because newcastle is a "no-life" or "not so happening" town or is it the university environment?. Actually I prefer to study in the "not so happening" environment. That is the reason why I avoided applying for universities in Melbourne.

Even though I am from Kuala Lumpur, I have never got use to going out for the nightlife and the clubbing thingy although I do sometimes hang-out with my college mates. Parents will say I am a good boy while some may say I am a boring kid.

Mine will be in Callaghan if I accept Newcastle. Apparently the fees they offered me is lower than the one published in their 2009 brochure. I am not sure if they have minus off some bursary amount.

i was referring to the callaghan campus. my campus is nice albeit small. it's also closer to sydney

do u know the reason they offered u lower fees? mine was also lower, im basically paying domestic student fees
*
Engineering program is in callaghan only. I guess no international students want to apply there, that's why they can offer lower fees than the published rate.

Ya...I have friends also prefer Sydney.

I can say that Newcastle is very efficient in handling applications. The international department is always following up with emails on the application status and she even phone me to check if I have received the offer. I respect them for their efficiency.

I have decided to take up Curtin's offer instead of UWA and Newcastle. Will be leaving for Perth Feb 09. Now needs to choose on-campus accomodation. George James would be my 1st choice. Hopefullly I can get it.

Hopefully LYN seniors in Perth can help give me some pointers for me to settle in with life in Perth.

I got 1 question guys. Should I convert all my RM to AUD now? Or do I wait till I had left to Australia then ask my parents to send and convert the RM to AUD straight away to my bank account?
If I convert now how do I bring it to Australia?
*
According to Bank Negara regulations there is a limit of taking cash out of Malaysia irrespective of what currency notes. If I am not mistaken - is up to RM10,000 (all currency combined). You have to declare if taking more than the allowed limit. Also its not safe carrying so much money. You can buy traveller's cheque.

I was told by my friends that they open a bank account in Australia and their parents TT the money over. I intend to do the same while I am there and at the same time bring some cash in AUD to cover expenses and establishment like what alwayshappy mentioned above.

Let's say my passport will be expired in 2010 but my course will end in 2011. Can I fly back to renew it in 2010 or I have to renew it before I go?
*
What I did was I renewed my passport although it only expire in September 2010. So now my new passport only expires in May 2014 and therefore I dont have to renew my visa for 4 years I will be studying in Australia . Immigration will give you extra 6 months if you renew more than 6 months before expiry ie 5 years + 6 months. On top of that, I only pay RM150 for renewal by attaching my offer letter from the university

Anyway all in 1 medical check up facility, i was there for less than 1 hours and got my visa approved less than a week. Call them for payment details, make sure you bring your passport and the referral letter(ones you applied for the e-visa). Cheers.

Kwang Hui - If you are staying somewhere in Jalan Sultan Ismail or Jalan Bukit Bintang (where most of the hotels are) you may want to consider this clinic -

Drs. Tong, Leow, Chiam & Partners
Horeb Service SDN.BHD
Level 17 Menara Ambank
No.8 Jalan Yap Kwan Seng
50450 Kuala Lumpur
Telephone: +60 3 2161 713, 2161 7207, 2163 0424

Dr Latha Giri

Its also a all in 1 medical check up. Same as December88, I was there for less than 1 hour and got my visa approved less than a week even though it was Christmas holidays at that time. You need passport photographs too for the medical forms and this clinic requires a photo copy of your passport page with your details

I renewed my passport even though I still have 1.5 years left. Submit your renewal application together with your university offer letter and you only need to pay RM150 instead of RM300. Your new passport will be valid for 5 years and 6 months. Its all done within the same day infact I got it done within 2 hours.

For those whose passport are going to expire next year, it would be advisable to renew the passport now before applying for the visa as your visa is linked to the passport number when applying. Therefore if you give your passport number that is going to expire next year, you will need to inform DIAC of your new passport number when you renew it next year. Further you may have to renew it at the Malaysian High Com or Consulate in Australia and it may take a longer time for renewal.
