Hi all,

I need to ask for your opinion.

Do I need to buy cooler pad if I bring over my Dell Inspiron 1420 laptopn to Australia? It seems quite heavy. Or I can buy in Australia but I guest the price might be higher than Malaysia.

Thanks!

How long does it take to get the student visa?
*
It depends how fast do you do medical checkup and also how fast your doctor transfer your report. It's better to do medical checkup with X-tray at the same place. For me it took less that a week, if I not mistaken, it took 5 days.

Hi i'm actually thinking of shipping my books to oz. Anyone has any idea or recommendations on which service to choose? I've tried visiting several courier services websites but am not sure if that's the right pick?

Try DHL. You can call them out, telephone number can get through the internet. They can pick up from your house. I advise you to get their box 1st then short it out before pick up.

Students have 20 or 25% discount, I couldn't recall but you need to show your offer letter.

i just hope can find 1 tht below $1000 monthly

If you stay in zone 2, it is slightly cheaper than zone 1. However, you need to spend more times on traveling.

Or initial stage, you can try homestay. Then, when you feel you have already familiarised with the place or have some friends would like to share with you then you move out. For homestay, you need to tell them 2 weeks before you move out. Anyway, it also depends on your luck. If you get bad homeparents, good luck to find accommodation as soon as possible, if you get good one I think you do not want to move.

You can try you university website and find more information. The price for zone 1 I think it is about 260 per week so per month about 1129. This includes with food, utilities, linens, internet (some) almost everything. You just need to bring you clothes and some personal belonging.

Or you can try this website. It is the agency for my university. http://www.student-accommodation.com.au/

Not really. Now, I'm homestay, this month my quota is 20 peak period and 40 off peak. Normally, I share with another student (one or two, normally one) but this month and next month, I use all. Hahaha

Homestay gives you some great experience, you can understand Australian culture faster.

Food wise, it is really depended on what are your preferences. If you don't like western food then homestay might not suitable to you. But one of the great thing is you don't need cook, don't need to go market every week or sometimes you need to go twice a week. Besides, it is really save a lot of time. However, you will miss asian food but you can go to your friends' house and cook it or eat out (slightly expensive, once a while is ok).

For rules, it depends different homestay. Some people cannot bring their friend while some homeparents don't mind it. Some family don't allow you to online after 11pm. Some need you to bath within 4 mins. The rules are varied from house to house. So far for me, I have no problem.

$800 for 1 whole unit but how to know whether is fake or not?
i scared i will get scam

I think not really good to find a house from the internet. Sometimes, photos are different from reality. I suggest you to come here 1st then find your house. Or you can stay with your friends or relatives. Pls don't pay your bond without seeing the physical house.

Dear Boby,

Most of us here are lonely and don't know anyone else in our university.

If you have any questions about studying at RMIT or same course with you, you can search through "facebook". I think it is really useful for me but for you I have no idea.

Wish this can help. happy.gif

Kwang Hui - If you are staying somewhere in Jalan Sultan Ismail or Jalan Bukit Bintang (where most of the hotels are) you may want to consider this clinic -

Drs. Tong, Leow, Chiam & Partners
Horeb Service SDN.BHD
Level 17 Menara Ambank
No.8 Jalan Yap Kwan Seng
50450 Kuala Lumpur
Telephone: +60 3 2161 713, 2161 7207, 2163 0424
Fax: +60 3 2161 9401, 2162 0199
Doctor(s):
Dr Kang Beng Huat
Dr Chiam Yoke Choo
Dr Francis Sarojini
Dr Latha Giri

Its also a all in 1 medical check up.  Same as December88, I was there for less than 1 hour and got my visa approved less than a week even though it was Christmas holidays at that time.  You need passport photographs too for the medical forms and this clinic requires a photo copy of your passport page with your details
*
Choose online system rather than conventional method which use mail. Therefore, when you fill your visa remember register your online medical checkup.

The clinic beside Hilton is using online system. I didn't bring my picture, they took it for me. They also have other options which use conventional and need additional RM20 if not mistaken.

How much cash should i carry along with me when my first arrival to Melbourne City? ( No Accomodation yet ).
*
I recommend you arrange your accommodation 1st. For instance university hostel or homestay. Homestay will be great for those who are new in Melbourne and not really expensive and include everything such as meal.

If you live in homestay bring 100 is more than enough.

Meal here about 10 per meal or even higher. It is depend which zone do you stay.

Please prepare for accommodation 1st. Or ask you university prepare temporary accommodation. Normally, they will arrange motel for you. Not really bad but you need to find accommodation as soon as possible.

All the best

Yea im going to stay in a hotel for 2 night to search for accomodation.
I actually thought of bringing more than AUD500 cause im not sure about the rental deposit over there. Open bank account CoE also can rite? Because my enrolment date is on the 18 feb but im planning to touch down on Melbourne on the 10 to search for accomodation, i dun think my student card is ready.
*
For rental, some places need 1 month bond and 1 month rental fee. So, it means you need to pay 2 months rental fee. Rent varies according to which area do you stay. Could you tell me which university and area? Sorry, maybe you've been mentioned it before but I already forgotten.

Wool top and jumper are enough to keep you warm and not too heavy. All the winter stuff buy over here.

Here only shower not raining. What frighten me here is hail storm. My umbrella was broken by hail storm vmad.gif
