I got several questions about studying in Australia.
Personal Info:
Currently studying Form 6. Stpm 2008(this year).
Taking 4 subjects. Physics,Chemistry,Maths,General Studies.
Ambition: Engineer
SPM Results: Bm A1 Eng A1 Physics A1 Chem A1 Bio A2 Maths A1 Add.maths A1 Moral B3 EST B3 History C5
1119:A2

Questions:
1)What are the requirements to apply for Bachelor of Engineering? Like how good should my STPM results be? Forecast results(needed?)? Or do I need to sit any additional exams?
2)Bachelor of Engineering does it mean Mechanical? Electrical? Mechatronics? Or neither?
3)Currently interested in ANU , University of Melbourne , University of Sydney , University of Queensland(The universities that could get JPA scholarships). Where and how do I apply?
4)Do I need to contact/hire a 3rd party to apply?
5)When is the application deadline?
6)When is their intake?
7)Do I need to prepare a personal statement and a recommendation letter from my teacher?

8)Out of topic. If I were to get a place in one of the university. How good/bad or my chances of getting the JPA PSD scholarship?

JPA scholarships to overseas are only available to SPM leavers, right? Why din you apply after your SPM?
*
STPM graduates scholarship also available now. Well if can enter the top us,uk,or australia universities.

QUOTE(StarGhazzer @ Sep 16 2008, 03:26 PM)
Subang? Opposite Taylor's College... IDP, AusEd, and the other one at the corner... can't remember the name... just pick one. IDP and AusEd are more geared twds Australian Unis obviously. Or if you're from Taylor's, you could just go to the placement centre and ask.
*
Thx . IDP it is then. Would go there once free.

QUOTE(limeuu @ Sep 16 2008, 03:34 PM)
ever heard of something called the internet and mr. google???.......

all the uni websites are there, do your own research.....

for engineering, a ter of 80 will get you in comfortably, as an international fees paying student.....that is like BBC at stpm......pretty low requirements for engineering.......

you choose what branch of engineering you wanna enrole in....

anu is the best oz uni at the moment.......avoid melbourne, overpriced......any other go8 uni is fine.......

subang, go see idp........opposite taylor's.....

2 intakes a year, feb and july........

no need anything, just your results and money.......you will have problem with the feb intake as you results will not be on time, so try the july intake......
*
Googling and searching. I have like 20+ tabs right now about studyataustralia.gov.au and ielts.
BBC for stpm? Hmmm you sure?

Just called:
Ms Sazliny Jahaya
Information Officer
AEI Malaysia
Australian High Commission
6 Jalan Yap Kwan Seng
50450 KUALA LUMPUR

Required to have STPM result for unconditional letter.
Or forecast results for conditional letter.
Deadline October to Disember?
MUST take IELTS.(True right?)

About the IELTS right. How hard/easy is it? What is the format?

i might come off as a snob here but hey, so be it. but since you're googling, google up the IELTS site as well.

but since you've already opened up 20+ tabs and cant bother opening up another one, let me just say that in IELTS, there's comprehension, listening, writing and speaking modules. i dont know if MUET is accepted but IELTS is generally used to determine your competency in English for entry into unis here. how hard or easy it is for you i don't know. different people different levels of difficulty.
*
QUOTE(QuackSilver @ Sep 16 2008, 07:21 PM)
i blame it on the education system. with this attitude don't expect to survive long in Aus if you expect to be spoonfed everything
the thing is, IELTS is just like any other English exam. just do whatever you do to prepare for your previous English exams.
*
Oh I wasn't waiting to be spoonfed. I googled about it already. Just that, just now I was replying while I was still searching halfway.
Some of my college friends say MUET is accepted. Some say cant.....will call to inquire more tmr.
Anyways one question.
I would be taking the:
Listening
Academic Reading
Academic Writing
Speaking
Right?
And my minimum score would be?

QUOTE(kehler @ Sep 16 2008, 06:15 PM)
I'm with you on that. It puzzles me why people can't do a simple google search before asking questions. In fact, posting on a forum takes more effort than googling.
*
I google. Open lots of tabs. Reply while waiting for the pages to load. Then only view the pages. Sorry if I offended you by posting before googling.

QUOTE(Cheesenium @ Sep 16 2008, 07:23 PM)
I would say consider University of New South Wales,if you are going to Sydney. They are better in engineering than U Syd and they offer wider options for engineering courses.
*
But the JPA list of accepted universities in australia for scholarship my friend sms-ed me was:
ANU
Uni Of Melbourne
Uni Of Sydney
Uni Of Queensland
Hmmm.....must call jpa to inquire also....

QUOTE(alwayshappy @ Sep 16 2008, 07:25 PM)
Although STPM is way harder than A-level, the entry requirements for engineering using STPM will be higher than A-level.
For higher ranked uni in Aus, an aggregate point of 3.33 or around B+B+B+ should be sufficient to enter.
Actually you will find out that first year maths in engineering course will be pretty easy as you learnt most of them in STPM. Year 12 in Australia only cover basic stuff.
*
What? STPM needs higher requirements......why........

There is another avenue, but it is a longer road. From this year, any Malaysian who gets into an Ivy League university (in the United States) or Oxford and Cambridge (in Britain) or the Group of Eight in Australia, will be sponsored by the government, but again, in specified fields of study.

QUOTE
There’s another package. If you get into a local foreign university (a foreign university that has a Malaysian campus) — Nottingham, Monash, Curtin and Swinburne — you are also eligible for a PSD scholarship.

Hmmm.....dunno what jpa is thinking.

NO. If you do get (and the others have shown that it is near impossible as a student) a PR halfway through your course as a international student, you will loose your place as an international student, and will have to reapply, and even then I doubt you will be eligible for CSP. Full fees maybe.

For high level courses like Business, you should have little problem re-enrolling. But if you are doing something funky (say Bio-science) where the cut offs are vastly different between international and domestic students................................lets just say, if you had the money, you wouldn't be here.

Yes, tax is high. Again, it depends on how much you earn, but paying 40% to the taxman is not unheard off.

As least the money does go back into society in the form of parks, well stocked libraries, roads etc.

Tips when applying for Universities in Australia:
ALWAYS select the option that english is your first language.
Ask the representative if you could have your English Proficiency Requirement waived. If he ask you to email the head office just do so.
But make sure your email looks very very very formal.

I applied for 2 uni.
Sydney and ANU. First they said must take ielts .
Then for sydney I asked if english was my 1st language can I get the english test waived. The rep said yes. Sweet.

While the ANU rep said must take the english test. So I said I took o levels english for spm , muet , and stpm subjects are also done in english.
So he said email head office. I did. I wrote some very formal email complete with reasons in a numbered list. I got a reply in a few minutes.
It was waived.

WHILE my friend who sent an email:
QUOTE
Hi. I am XXXXXXX, an ANU undergraduate applicant from Malaysia. I have signed up for Bachelor of Engineering, and I'm reporting on my English proficiency, as what you have told me. Based on my result of 1119 (GCE O-level), I hope that I can get a waive for the English proficiency requirement. Thank you!

He got a reply stating "See first." I mean the reply meant that but of course in a more polite way.

y defer? mind u that fees are raising every year
*
See there were several options my parents gave me to get the money for tuition fees.
1. Military Loan(My father ex-military)
2. Sell one of the house that is meant to be mine.(My siblings all have a so called future house. 1 person 1 house something like that.)
3. Jpa Scholarship (This one only opens in april.....for the ivy leagues oxbridge , group 8...)

So if I defer it to the next intake I might get the extra option that is the jpa scholarship. Yeah I know slim chance but still.....

A mother emailed me that the son did well but didn't get a PSD scholarship. So I called her. I found out that her son is a pure science student but wants to do accountancy. He didn't do accounting in Form Five.

I told her to check with her son whether he would consider doing engineering. But he refused. So, since he is doing his A-Levels, I told him to do it very well and go to an Ivy League university, and we will sponsor him. So, that is what he is targeting now.
They had it last year. I called their head office in Putrajaya. They said they gonna have one more again next year. Students can start registering April next year.

y not enquire from anu whether they provide scholarships?

ANU would give scholarship to international students? I highly doubt that. Anyways will inquire.
Just checked their web site....they only provide 5 scholarship to international students....wont bother trying....

i'm sure there is...only that it's very limited and only small proportion of your fees most likely...
anyway u can apply for jpa loan...but they require you to at least finish ur 1st year 1st...
*
What? Serious? Means finish 1 year over there then apply for loan? How high/low are the chances of getting....if very thin then it is super risky right? Where is the info?

Just checked again , for international students from Malaysia with STPM results only 1 scholarship is available....

If you have 4As for A Levels or TER99.5+ in SAM/Austmat you stand a chance for the ANU International Undergrad Scholarship.... But even if you don't, try anyway. It's not that hard to fill in a form.
There's also an ANU Malaysian Alumni Scholarship. That will be advertised sometime this/next month in the papers. Apply for that too. That one gives you AUD10k per year plus on top of your fees. They only give out one though.
*
Okay. So my options now are:
1. Sell one house
2. Jpa Loan after 1 year being there
3. Military Loan (Father exmilitary)
4. Jpa Scholarship for top universities
5. ANU international student scholarship
6. ANU Malaysian Alumni Scholarship

Any more?

ANU International Undergraduate Scholarships
Sijil Tinggi Perskolahan Malaysia
STPM
23
Out of four (4) subjects. SPM qualification alone not accepted.

A score of 23 means?

Edit: I just checked both the 5. and 6. scholarship. Both comes with a new application form. I got the offer already do I need to apply again?
