where you staying? hotel?

airport to city will cost around AUD 30-50 depending where you going by cab. not sure of the bus rates.
hotel rates vary depending what you going for. some backpackers only AUD20 some are more.
food around AUD 4-8 for decent meal.
drink around AUD 1-2
tram daily AUD 6 or so not sure if its changed.

I don't see a problem with bringing along A$500 in cash on you. I mean, no one is going to mug you on the plane, and if they do they don't get far. It should get you through the first 2-3 days. Strongly recommend that you open your bank account and start transfers ASAP, preferably after you get your student card for the bank fee waiver.

I recommend you arrange your accommodation 1st. For instance university hostel or homestay. Homestay will be great for those who are new in Melbourne and not really expensive and include everything such as meal.

If you live in homestay bring 100 is more than enough.

Meal here about 10 per meal or even higher. It is depend which zone do you stay.

Please prepare for accommodation 1st. Or ask you university prepare temporary accommodation. Normally, they will arrange motel for you. Not really bad but you need to find accommodation as soon as possible.

All the best

Which uni u going, if is in the city I can provide you a short list of student accomodation. do it online make a booking to secure your room fast instead of searching everywhr, cause melbourne has got lack of student accommodation history be4. PM me ur email and i'll send u the list... If you want... that's my advise... cheers

For rental, some places need 1 month bond and 1 month rental fee. So, it means you need to pay 2 months rental fee. Rent varies according to which area do you stay. Could you tell me which university and area? Sorry, maybe you've been mentioned it before but I already forgotten.

Staying in hotel is not advisable as it will be expensive. You are not there for a holiday so you need to save a bit on these things.

I think CoE is enough to prove that you are a uni student.

Apply visa online is much easier than you apply through aust. high comm., even though if you are to go to aust. high comm. they will only advise you to apply it via online. I've just got that done, it's easy, everything is stated on the website. When you apply your visa online, you dont need a sticker on your passport, as they will automatically record according to your provided passport number. But pls take note on your passport expiry date, whether it is long enough for your duration of studies in aust. if not, it may causes you a lot of problem. Just make sure it's enough duration before you apply for your visa. Cheers... hope this helps.

I presume your course would be shorter than your passport life, but make sure your passport is able to cover adequate time before you need to renew it again. Otherwise it'd be a pain in the arse to go to Canberra and sort it out; I'm not sure whether you can do it elsewhere than Canberra.

If you're flying through SIA i.e. you need to enter Singapore to fly via Changi then note that your passport needs to have MORE than 6 months before the expiry date.

An email would be sent to you once the application is approved. Jot down the number and keep it in a safe place just in case you need it for whatever reason, or go to high comm and get a sticker for your passport. It's not compulsory though.

Contact lens liquid... yes... but put all liquids in your luggage and check it in, don't bring it to the cabin if it's a large bottle.
Medicine needs to be declared before you enter Australia, but no one actually checked mine before.

Leather wallet should be ok, again no one checked my wallet for the type of skin tongue.gif
