yeng ar? really?

anyway i was wondering do you curse in chinese in front of the ang moh?

because my bro used to joke around saying his name is PuKIma
*
Not a good idea ler haha... imagine everyone calling you "pukima" lol

My friend in Monash actually taught his Indon friends all the bad words, so now they also say "tamade" and "jibai" but in a funny accent.

Hi MeruChan my dear,

Australia is nothing different smile.gif

Here, the only thing good about here is there's no such thing as Bumiputera.
*
Well they do have "bumiputera" i.e. Aborigines biggrin.gif
But yeah, Aborigines might have some privileges, but no one truly has the unfair "hak istimewa" over here.

QUOTE(mangoman @ Nov 5 2008, 06:02 PM)
The speed is very decent, i have been using it for more than 3years, value for money. smile.gif But sometimes the technical service is a bit suck coz they outsource the customer service to india. But if u doesnt need too many technical support, u should go with this ISP. smile.gif
*
TPG is pretty good, I've been using it for almost 2 years now and apart from the occasional minor glitches there ain't much trouble around. Sometimes the line would just freeze and not able to load any pages. When that happens, I just off the modem, wait for a few minutes and on it again and it'll be fine. Speed wise it depends on your area too... Mine's an ADSL2 but I don't think I'm getting the maximum speed due to the location; yet it's fast enough for me not to complain too much haha.

The quality of tech support depends on who you get through the telephone. I've talked to an angmoh who gave me great advice, and I've also talked to some angmohs and Indians which were pretty clueless too. Oh well... you can also check out their forum for tech support as their support guy who runs the forum is quite helpful.

I've friends who are using the services of smaller ISPs and there has been mixed reviews. TPG, from my experience and also from other users, would be one of the top choices to consider.

limeuu and bhypp... janganlah gaduh... just a trivial matter only mah... and everyone buaya-ing meruchan? WTF man... exams coming lah, baca buku wei.

Yeah... most angmohs can't really pronounce Chinese names properly since they didn't learn hanyu pinyin... Despite that in M'sia a lot of my friends call me by my surname, I'm quite reluctant to use that here since everyone uses first names over here.

Koko Black is ok lah although a lot of people say it's drop dead good... . Max Brenner is kinda overrated, but then again I'm not exactly a chocolate fan so yeah. There's also another one called San Churro (something like that) with spanish doughnuts, meh, oh well.

But if you're a girl you might think otherwise, since most girls go crazy over chocolate.

QUOTE(Lim Ling Yang @ Nov 10 2008, 12:37 PM)
Erm the person I talked to in IDP quite blur.....

What are the steps I must take now to accept the offer?
1. Renew passport(Expire adi lol.)
2.?
Info From IDP:
1. Renew passport
2. Pay 450 AUD for visa application
3. Summit the application and get a code
4. Go med check up
5. Get visa....
6. Then go there and pay first session tuition fee

Sounds....weird...

So when do I pay the Fee Deposit:
A$5,380.00 (single OSHC) or A$5,760.00 (family OSHC) or A$2,500.00
(Non-Award deposit)

Another question.
http://accom.anu.edu.au/UAS/977/207.html
Undergraduate accommodation. Which one do I apply for?

Erm? From the earlier comment I should take the self catered hall?

Any suggestions?
Or do I find my own accommodation once I reach there? Would that be cheaper?

*
Not sure whether this applies to ANU or not, but you might need to pay the tuition fees for the first semester first (or at least part of it depending on your payment scheme) before you fly all the way to Australia. Check with IDP to be sure... in fact they would be more qualified to give you up-to-date information compared to us since the regulations in Aust differs between unis and they change quite often too.

As for the "single OSHC", why does it cost so much? Like zltan said it only costs approx 300+ AUD for 12 months for a typical student, single person basic cover (which really doesn't cover much shit anyway).

Did you add in additional coverage or benefits that would have increased the cost, or maybe your cover lasts much, much longer? 5380AUD is bloody a lot...

Get it translated and carry the translated version around just in case any cops pull you over and ask for it. Granted, the information on our licenses is pretty self-explanatory, but you'll never know which NBTD cop wants to muck around with you and invites you over to the balai with an excuse of "I don't understand the language on your card".

i hope you are not considering bringing your fees of aud20k over in CASH!!

change enough for initial use, say aud500 should be sufficient for the first few days........

bring the rest in bank drafts.....the cheapest way of fund transfer.....open an account first thing on arrival, and bank in the drafts........they clear in 3 working days........

tt is ONLY if funds are needed urgently........otherwise, drafts.....tt is expensive......

when you buy your drafts, well, if you are NOT going yet, monitor the rates and buy when it dips........
*
TT is not as expensive as thought... usually they only take AUD 10 from my total amount and that's still acceptable.

AUD 500 for the first few days is more than enough since the other fees would have been settled once you get there, as long as you open an account and bank in the drafts immediately.

that's the view from my kitchen... there, first hint biggrin.gif come and find me tongue.gif

As for the weather, it has been a wet and cold week and chances are it'll be continuing all the way to the next. I don't like cold rain, but the water is greatly needed for Vic's reservoirs as the levels are still low compared to last year's. Having said that, the news actually reported that the rain in Brissie on Thurs actually exceeded the whole year's rainfall in Melb. Shocking...

I'm not particularly worried about 40C summer as I'd be back home by then hehe... but it's december now, so chances are JB will be raining nonstop as usual. doh.gif Dang, last year it rained nonstop for a week... bugger, can't do jack with all the rain around.

For those in Brissie, how's the flood going now? Hope none of you guys got swept away...

Worse time? Nah... great time... lots of places to go, lots of outdoor activities, lots of people at the beach innocent.gif
And most importantly you don't have to wrap like bakchang whenever you step out of your room.
Trams will always be crowded no matter summer or winter...

Then again I'll be going back during summer for electives so yeah... Maybe I'll go to beaches in M'sia or Sentosa Island LOL.

Depending on your ISP package. Most of them will shape your speed to 64k or 128k which will make you want to rip your brains out.

SIA gave me 40kg of baggage hehe... used to be approx RM 3300-3600 for a return ticket, not sure about now though. Air Asia X has one flight to Melb as well and next Feb I'll be taking this to come back, costs around RM 600+ for one way but hell it flies like a snail for some reason.

Try to avoid Qantas if possible, those fellas have one high profile accident every month sweat.gif Give me free tickets I also don't want...

if i from RMIT want go Monash Caulfield then it need how long to reach thr?
*
I presume RMIT along Swanston? If RMIT Bundoora then LOL adi...

Take any tram along Swanston down to Flinders St Station, which would probably take approximately 5 minutes (maybe a bit more if there's a lot of people). From Flinders St hop on the train and it'll take you around 15 minutes to get to Caufield. Monash is directly next to the train station.

Add in some time waiting for the tram/train to arrive, you'll get to Caufield in approx. 30 minutes.

Metlink is your friend.

btw is Unilodge worth to live in?
im interested on Unilodge D1 and Swanston.but duno which nearer n better

any idea?

Well RMIT is along Swanston so obviously Unilodge Swanston is nearer tongue.gif Then again there are two Unilodges along Swanston and one's closer to UniMelb and the other is near RMIT. I presume you're talking about the latter.

It depends I guess, but I'm not sure how great the difference is between these two units apart from location. There are Unilodges virtually everywhere in the city so take your pick. I've a friend who stays in Unilodge Lonsdale and the whole unit's pretty small, and the rooms are just enough for one person each... Don't think about squeezing 2 in one room.

But location wise... maybe Bouverie might be better as it's on a quieter street. It's just one street away, parallel to Swanston.
Swanston can get very hectic and noisy at times with all the pedestrians and trams.

ooo
but the pricing is it normal if compare to other places outside thr?
i will find more at Swanston
*
Pretty much standard pricing for student colleges I suppose. Don't expect anything cheap since you're targeting for places in the city itself. Living anywhere close to the city will easily cost you 400-500 per week. Studio suites probably cost cheaper maybe 300-400 but they are freaking small.

College Square costs about the same but I can't be sure about the other differences btw these two places. Then again, I've never stayed in any student accomodation as I'm sharing a place with my sisters so yeah. Maybe those who are staying in student houses and colleges can shed some light... tongue.gif

Good luck finding accomodation biggrin.gif

i just hope can find 1 tht below $1000 monthly
*
If you're hoping for an apartment within the city with 2 separate rooms for both you and your friend, don't put your hopes too high for a sub-1000 rental. It's probably hard to get somewhere that cheap in the suburbs surrounding the city as well, unless you're talking about suburbs that are half an hour (or more) away.

Unless of course, both of you are sharing one room and splitting the rent. I don't think it'll be that convenient or easy to rent a room intended for single use and yet both of you squeeze inside. Twin sharing rooms in student colleges don't come cheap either as you'll probably need 800-1000 per month as well especially those located in the city.

What people tend to do is to stay at student colleges for one semester or a whole year, and then shift out to cheaper places once they get used to Melbourne and manage to find a place elsewhere. Student colleges, despite the high price, is pretty convenient for those who are coming for the first time.

QUOTE(X.E.D @ Dec 13 2008, 11:05 PM)
Err, any idea on how Melbourne Uni considers my UEC grades?

The prospectus is extremely vague, as it just says "Score based on average achieved across all final-year subjects".
I'm streaming Sciences (Phy and Chem only) and intend to go for non-chemistry based engineering courses.
Do they consider Malay and Chinese (or Art)? Because if these ARE indeed counted even for engineering, I'd be pulled from an A2 average to a B4 or so. One of my classmates' sister flunked on BM but still got in, so I'm further curious on this. She did have convincing science results, though.
Melb needs an A2 average (phew) for a lot of the coveted subjects so I was wondering.
In normal cases I'd just give up Aussie and study in Singapore due to much more relaxed financial states, but Melbourne is an interesting proposition. I've got a friend that lives there, and might be able to offer reduced homestay rates.

I just need to know how it goes, just to know if I even have a shot (100AUD for a suicide application isn't exactly cheap.)
*
Come to Melb lah hehe... SGD is approximately the same as AUD now... And if the costs are not a big factor in your consideration, I'll say come to Melbourne to experience something different. Singapore, for what it's worth, is still pretty much similar in terms of culture and mentality as M'sia. Furthermore, you mentioned that you have a friend around there so it'll be less daunting in terms of adaptation.

As for the results like RBR said it's better to email them than to ask stuff over here. Admin stuff are usually hard for us to answer unless anyone's working for the uni.
